HDv3 latest udpdate
Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)

Basically Preview Character in the Export menu does not work, I can export fo file, set preview format but when I try to preview a character HD seems to "do" something but nothing appears, no firefox when html or xml, no oppenoffice when rtf.

Trace.log confirmed what I suspected, HD can't open the necessary apps:

Could not invoke browser, command=netscape file:///usr/local/HeroDesigner/Export Formats/11487316487074804.RTF
Caught: java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: netscape: not found

Could not invoke browser, command=netscape file:///usr/local/HeroDesigner/Export Formats/114873275612159980.HTML
Caught: java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: netscape: not found

So... how do I tell HD what apps to use?

Are the permissions set to allow Hero Designer to open other progams?

I'm not sure, I run HD as the user and the user can run both Firefox and Openoffice. It tries to launch netscape anyway, which I don't have, it's no surprise it's not launching :D.

Short term fix: create a symbolic link to your firefox executable in one of the directories in your PATH. Call the symbolic link "netscape".

Long term fix: I'll put in a setting under the application preferences where you can specify the path to the browser executable to use.

The long term fix mentioned above is part of today's update.

Thanks a lot! It tries to open rtf files with firefox though, which is not a problem since firefox launches openoffice.

I've got another question relating exports, are all html export formats compatible with HDv3? I'm asking because I'm using the OneColumnAbilities one and the talents, perks and skills names ("Name" tag on HD) don't appear in the html, I also tried KillerShrike's export formats for OneColumn htmls and weirder, in these the name appears twice!

Everything opening up with the browser that you specify is normal (and expected) behavior.

All prior version templates work fine in HDv3. If you're not seeing the name field, it's because the template creator did not specify for it to be exported. Similar answer if you're seeing the name field twice. You may want to check through the Vault for updated copies.
