Hi guys,

I know this should probably go in the General Discussion area, but I rarely leave this forum and feel like I know you folks better.

So here it goes.

Yesterday morning I was laid-off from my job doing software testing on cellphone games/applications. My wife's contract ended with a different company on Friday.

We're both IT professionals (she's a database/systems engineer) and just bought a house in November. For obvious reasons we need to find work ASAP.

So, if any of you in the San Diego/Riverside area happen to know of anyone doing any hiring, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks

Wow, that sucks.

Don't get your hopes up, but if you want to send me your resume privately Ill see if I know of anyone in the area looking for your sort of skill set.

At the very least I can probably give you some advice to push your skill set around a bit to broaden your chances and keep an eye out on the market for you.

Thanks guys, yeah it was a bit of a shocker to say the least.

@Killer: I'll fire it off right now.

I'll pass along another 'Damn that sucks' response.
Heh. Well on the bright side, more time to game right? ;)
Okay, so that wasn't that funny.
I'd still say it's pretty likely to be able to find a position in the Temecula/Murrieta area.
For a long commute, they are looking for a Director of IT at the Eastern Municipal Water District in Perris.

Well all I can say is hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. (yes, not encouraging, but just keep going)

I was out of work for a year after college. Even if you dont have to worry day-to-day about bills (I live with my mother, and now with a job help her with bills, etc) it get pressure-filled and your self-esteem takes a shot in the ***s. So dont give up.

And in the future I wouldnt worry about posting something like this in NGD. From what I have seen they are pretty supportive in this area. It is just everything else they fight over

Life is about "fighting" some ordeal or another. You just keep going. And when you look you'll realize you got through it. Maybe not like you want, but you get through it and are stronger for it. Good luck.

Dont forget to look at Phoenix. The market here is active again in IT, and while it doesnt pay Cali wages, a contract here might help you pull through.

Thanks everyone! Normally I wouldn't stress, but my wife's contract ended a week ago so we're both going Oh ****!

My sympathies.

You're from San Diego/RS? I grew up there. Nice place. Haven't been back for half a decade. How is it now?

Thanks. I can only speak to the East County and Temecula/Murrieta, but all of them growing like crazy. Santee is becoming a miniature Poway and they're really trying to grow the business district there.

Murrieta/Temecula has become clone home heaven and now they, too, are growing the commercial/business districts. it won't be long before Hemet is considered the outskirts and Murrieta/Temecula are the "downtown" of the Inland Empire.

With the housing situation as it is, everybody in San Diego and Orange County are moving up here to get affordable homes.

Mayapuppies, thanks! I lived in SD from 1975 until 1994 (I'm 35, graduate of San Diego High School '88 and SDSU), and must say I often miss the place, at least as far as it exists in my memories. Good luck to you!

Sorry to hear it, and best of luck, MP. My wife and I were in your shoes just a few short months ago, but we pulled through. Some advice from someone who's been there:

1. Apply for unemployment immediately. It sometimes takes weeks or even months for them to get their act together, so the sooner you do it the better. Hopefully you'll be working again before you need it, but it's nice to have the safety net.

2. Prioritize your monthly expenses. Drop anything you don't really need. Don't eat out as often, don't go to as many movies, etc. You'll put less strain on your savings that way.

3. Apply for jobs even if you don't think you're 100% qualified for them. I once got a good job that I was certain I couldn't qualify for, but decided to send them a resume anyway.

Good luck!

Yeah, we've pretty much cut-off all expenses. My wife has an interview today down in El Cajon and it is looking like the IT guys at Guidant really want her back as well.

MP, there's a recruiting company here in Charlotte that has an office in CA as well.
I think it's in Orange County, but I'm not sure.

The company is called SMCI, Software Management Consultants Inc.
I've gotten three jobs from them (they kept me employed from 1996 through 2004). They send me a Christmas card every year and I still get email from them periodically, checking to see if I'm available or need a job.

Give them a call; anything in IT, they probably have a contact at the employer.

And good luck with the job search; don't stress out!

This is the wrong place for this.

Still, here's wishing you hope!

Cool! How long to you think you can get her to pay all the bills while you "look for work"?

...or is that not the way to look at it?

:D

LOL

Funny thing is, we don't even know what they're going to pay her yet. Her friend is hiring her into his department so she's been getting the inside scoop rather than the recruiter talking to her.

I'm hoping to land something locally, but she talked me into applying as a QA Manager for a toy company in Malibu as well. :ugly:

Sorry for the long hiatus and threadomancy but I thought I'd post an update on this.

Anne found a great job in Los Angeles working for a subsidiary of Sempra Energy and I finally landed a position with a software company in Corona (just north of where I live). She starts on Friday and I started yesterday.

Pretty much on our last legs as far as the mortgage was concerned and living off the gracious help of friends and family, but we survived. :ugly:

Man, I truly do not want to go through this again.

Grats on the employment. Both sound like good positions (even if Corona smells like cows ;-) ).
