Since I'm running Mutants and Masterminds, but in a predominant Champions universe, I thought I would share some of my doodles as I get them done for my game. I'll post stuff here occasionally.
this particular beastie is being written up in MM, but was already featured as a Champions critter. Neil has the file on this one (as do I, but it is so buried in my mac, and it is a creation workshop file and won't be read by my mac) I'm hoping y'all can convince him to post it here.
Anyways the art is below. Have fun.
{If you are curious about the MM stats, here is the thread to that...page 7}

103 viewings, 126 downloads (not sure how that happened) and I get two comments!?!?!?!?!
One from my player.
Geez folks, tell me it sucks or you like it or something. After all the complaining I heard about not enough colored art, I give y'all some for free... and I get the chirping of crickets. Sheesh.
and Neil, any chance you could throw the stats up for a friendly dreyogg?

My interpretation is if it's been downloaded 126 times, it probably doesn't suck... ;)
Personally, I think I'd like to avoid meeting up with one of htese things. The image is vicious enough -- I can't imagine the stats make it any more cuddly.
Very good work at drawing a very nasty-looking thing. Please don't do it again. My children get annoyed at me when I tell them I've had a bad dream and ask if I can "sleep in their room tonight..."

Hey, give those of us who have to work a chance! We can't spend all day commenting, you know ;).
Image looks great - and very nasty. Sort of reminds me of the boomers from Bubblegum Crisis - with extra added spikey bits!
Looking forward to seeing the Champions stats, and many thanks for the free illos.

Sorry, Storn.
The good:
I like the pants. Usually, I find your cloth folds a little chunky, but I liked these. I also like the pose and the work/design of the face is excellent. You give a very good sense of motion in this piece.
The fire spitball effect is well done. I think the color could have been a little more intense/less pastel looking but I think I only feel this way because of the white background.
The bad (hopefully constructive):
I felt his right hand lacked detail especially in the palm. The other hand could use a little something on the fingers/talons. Compared to the rest of the piece (with shading and hash work), it looks like the line work was painted over or something.
The color seemed a little bland to me. I admit to not being a big fan of the watercolor look, so I'm biased. I would have liked to see more highlights & shading on the cables. They are pretty plain. Overall it looks to me the color is a little washed out looking (again, I'm biased).
Overall:
Nice job. I was looking through some older Hero books recently and it's really impressive just how much you've improved over the years. There's a great sense of motion here (no motion lines or blurs needed) and a good sense, with the pose, of a kind of creepy style of movement.

Acroyear, its a sketch. Like someone commenting about day job, well, I have one too. It just "happens" to be related. So a bit of detail lacking in the hand was intentional. The watercolor look is intentional. lack of detail in the cables is simply called "lazy". I didn't want to spend a ton of time on it, because its not meant for publication. Since i'm not lazy at all (I can say with all confidence) in my work, if I let some hobby sketches slide a bit...well... this is just a doodle and just fun. I'm not going to put the same pressure on myself that I do for a pro job.
also, Neil has stated many times that he likes the flow, the sketchiness of my pencil work. I was trying to keep that, yet present something that was in color and was indicative of the character it was meant to display. Experimental? You betchya.

Oh, I figured it wasn't a polished piece but you were asking for comments. Rather than just say "pretty good" - I apologized for not commenting and I figured I'd point out what I liked and didn't like. You have said in the past you prefer constructive comments to help yourself improve. You have requested in the past that people just not say "that sucks" or "cool" but to comment on what sucks or is cool and why the person thinks so. :)
As stated "hopefully constructive" and pointed out the changes *I* would have preferred (sharper color, a little more detail in a couple places to match the rest, and I stated my bias about the watercolor look, which I know you like...but I don't. So as a viewer...I don't care for it which influences my opinion). I like this piece more than some of your pro jobs, actually. I like the pencil-ly look to this one.

Right, so you wanted comments...
You've managed to convey that the figure is in motion extremely well.
Even though you were "lazy" with the cables, they seem to interact with the figure properly and don't look unnatural - or, at least, as natural as cables sticking out of a body can be.
The head seems a tad too small for the body, but the rest of the proportions seem right. The twisting of the torso, and the foreshortening that entails seems correct.
I realy like the right arm. Specifically the twisting of the wrist and forearm.
Was this computer colored? In many ways I'm not a huge fan of computer coloring, but I think most of what you've done here works well (giving the critters flesh a necrotic feel). However, and this is the reason I asked the lead in question, I'm not crazy about the "breath weapon"... It has a very different feel from the rest, kinda sterile and lacking "personality".
On the whole, though, I really like the piece. Which, considering I'm an "unofficial" Stornite (Stornian?), isn't at all surprising to me.
Just my two cents (which, if you saw my "art", prob'ly wouldn't be worth even that).

ah Pruttm, you reminded me of something I wanted to say.
Coloring over pencils is the exact same process of coloring over grayscale. Exactly. So if I can do it, computer newbie I am, anyone can color any illo that is grayscale. In fact, it is no different in theory, than an underpainting that is the basis of thousand years of art.
You do need Photoshop though. And a wacom tablet goes a long way to making it easier.
1) scan in your art (or get an electronic version of grayscale art)
2) Under "Image" is "Adjust". Under Adjust is "levels" and "Brightness/Contrast". Both which can be used to lower or raise the blackness quotient of the picture. I actually make my pencils darker. But for grayscale, you might want to play with Bright/Contrast to darken the dark lines, but minimize the gradients.
3) Under "Image" is "Mode". Under "Mode" change Grayscale to RGB Color. Now you can slap some color around.
4) Under "Window" is "Show Layers" (if it isn't already out). There is a little arrow to the right on the "Layers" box. Click on it. Select "Duplicate Layer".
5) Now you have two layers, select the one on top, now in the box is a pull-down menu that should say Normal at the moment. Change it to Multiply. Now, all that gray will stay while you can apply color over the gray.
6) Paint away in the colors you want on the Multiply layer. I tend to use "Wet Edges" on the paint tool... but you don't have to.
7) If you want highlights, build "New Layer" and do your highlights on that, do not set it to Multiply. I tend to do my Highlights at 85% because I do like a bit of texture to come through...there is a slide scale when you select a brush tool to allow this. But if you don't, set to 100%
8) When done, "Flatten Layers" and you can save as a tifff, jpeg...what have you.
This method does take slightly more time than blasting in color into a line drawing. And how many times has there been a "little space" and your fill tool as painted 65% of the pic and you gotta go find that little space to fill it? But not much more. And you will have the rounding of the form because the shadows and the highlights are already there in greyscale. You won't have to supply as much. And you will get something that is much more "real" looking that the filled-in look of say, heromachine.
Acroyear
Feb 20th, '03, 01:01 PM
Actually, if you set your tools right, you don't get that little white space on a fill. I don't fill, though, I multiply paint.
When the grayscale isn't stinky, Storn's given very good advice there... (I'm hoping I have a poor printing and the art isn't just stinky. Utility in my CKC is a silhouette....that image is useless). But yeah, it can be done. You just have to put out a little more effort and are restrained to the original artist's light source and shading styles which for many of us isn't a bad thing ;)

Hey Storn. I commented a bit on it on the other thread, but I really dig this picture. And the style used to make it. I know it's a sketch, but that's largely part of the charm. The textured pencil strokes on the pant legs and near the fit are my favorite. Just gives it a lot of character.
As far as the character and the overall feel for the drawing, it honestly reminds me of Silvestri's X-Men run and those baddies the Reavers.
I appreciate the color schem myself. It shows some excellent restraint, which is a sign of a seasoned artist in my opinion. Great art is all about firm decision making and you've chosen your palette wisely.
OH, a question for you. I know you like to do your work in color most of the time, even if it's published in black and white. I was computer coloring in just grey before - but then I said "what's the point." I may as well use color. It doesn't take much more time, and it's just as easy to monitor contrast and value. My question is, do you tweak it for black and white publication after you finish the coloring? This is what I've been doing lately. I'll color it completely, but using more layers than I normally would. Then I convert it to greyscale. The separate layers make it much more convenient for me to alter the contrast between to shapes. Just wondering if this is perhaps a similar approach to what you use.
Anyway, thanks for sharing with us. Always a blast to see artwork someone uses in their game.

Nato, thanks for your comments... Loved your Foxbat tank illo in UVA!
>>My question is, do you tweak it for black and white publication after you finish the coloring?<<<
About 60% of the time, I tweak after I've converted to Grayscale. I'm getting better at knowing what colors will do what when converting. It used to be about 90% of the time. I play just a tad with Brightness/Contrast... and usually a tad is all it takes. I feel that my stuff has been printing ok compared to Chris's. Chris's line work is phenominal, but the grayscale seems to get a bit washed across the board. Chris and I have talked about this. I really try to staying towards the light end of the spectrum... I suggested to him the same thing. This is where working in color helps me. A light yellow, next to a light blue will give me a nice range of Light grays when converted. They will be awfully close, but not identical.
I try to make sure that in the color version there is some white left, it seems to ground the color into a range that will work in gray. I also go from 0-70% Value and then skip to a 100% Value (black). I try to stay away from the 75%-99% Value range...it will all read as a black mass when printed, as opposed to 75%-99% Gray.
I did 5 illos for Millennium City (a low amount due to time constraints on my end) 4 of them where color. I was going to color the 5th, but I scanned in the grayscale work and I was happy with it. So that last one, I did some minor tweaking of Gray application. For what it is worth.

Well, I wasn't going to finish this doodle. But I wanted to experiment with liquid acrylics on top of clear gesso for an underpainting. Usually I do gesso acrylic seal over pencils before oil paint...but the gesso, while clear, is kinda milky and dilutes the darkest darks. Something that is very useful to have when doing the overpainting.
So, this was to be a character drawing, but as I was building the character, it changed on me considerably... so I ditched this drawing, not overly enamored with it.
but it served as the perfect vehicle to test out my *new* underpainting technique. So I'm posting it here in case anyone finds a use for it. Because the pencil is sealed in, there is lots of little stray lines. While this was just a test, in a true painting, the whole surface would be covered and you would never see stray pencil lines.

Interesting technique. I had a teacher who worked in similar fashion using rabit skin glue.
So after you've sealed in your pencils with the clear gesso, it looks as if you've applied the paint in a very liquid form, almost like watercolors? I'll have to give that a try.

Very nice artwork. I agree with some of the other posters in that I'm not a huge fan of the watercolor look, but I do like the sketchy relaxed feel of the original piece. I really like the "Cobalt" drawing. Very sharp.
I also *really* liked the adventure descriptions. I haven't run across a story hour-type board here, and that seems like something that a role playing community can always use. Anyways, I bookmarked the Green Ronin thread so I can keep up with what's going on! Hopefully you'll keep finding time to update it! :)

That is funny Acro. There are no new ideas. <g>
My sketch, the pencils were sitting around for two weeks. So, maybe we were channeling the same idea. What is kinda ironic, is that sketch is useless for my character concept... I moved away from that visual idea as I built the character... but my GM asked me to throw a cape on it quickly and would be perfect for an NPC.
And on Cobalt there, yeah, the Kirby homage was deliberate. Rob's request is that Cobalt is a silver age-looking type and Kirby was the word he used too. So... I guess I do know Jack.

I think that the watercolor look really works well for this one. I think that where I start to run in to problems with watercolor is when I see a piece where the subject is cartoony and I would expect bright primary colors, but the colors are a little dim and the edges not as sharp as I tend to like. The subject here is a bit more muted than most four-color supers, and the edges are well-defined in all the right places.
That reminds me, I really like the cover to Dark Champions (the old one; haven't seen the new one), and the character firing two guns while diving around the piano from FREd. Those are probably two of my favorite gaming pieces of artwork. Very nice stuff.

Not defensive.
Annoyed.
You've already have made it abundently clear that you don't care for the earlier sketchy pics. So why bring it up again?
And the statement "maybe its the blue-green pallet I don't care for..." is just a stupid statement, considering that is ALL Kid Cobalt is (which you stated you did like) and your own freakin' avatar!
Listen, this stuff is not for print.. although I feel that some of it is good enough to print. Its just for me fooling around with various techniques, illustrating some characters in my games. I'm sharing it with y''all so you might get some use out of it.
The comments I was hoping to get was "hey, this is useful." or "gee, sketchy qualities CAN work for some sub-genres of superheroes", maybe stumble around some techniques... heck, costume design like yourself posted.... not to get detailed analysis of, dare I say it? SKETCHES!!!
It is my fault, I admit. I didn't make clear what kind of comments I was expecting.
However, everyone can feel free to critique my art. I just hold the right to feel annoyed when it seems petty to me. Trust me, I've taken much stronger critiques of my art than anyone has dished out here. I know what a good critique is. And I know how to take my medicine.
But I really can't give a damn that you don't like my blue-green palette. I just can't take a statement like that seriously. Its like saying, because you drew a figure in your sketch book with legs too short, that you suck because I don't like the way you draw legs. If I have an issue with the way you draw legs, I would point out; "hey, measure that leg from the knee down... it seems wonky in its length"... or something. I wouldn't say; "hey prismacolors suck for superheroes and I don't like your style because of your short legs." See the difference?

I also loved how it combined traditional and digital techniques to create something you couldn't really create with either alone (the water spots come from reality, the utterly smooth gradation that dominates the picture comes from the digital world. Great fusion of the two!)
I've been toying with doing a space opera campaign, though certainly not anytime recently. I think this one captures the feel of the genre very well. (Hell, it's my wallpaper right now.) Thanks for letting us all in on your sketches! I'm really digging it.

Poor Neil, I used to pump out characters almost on a weekly basis. But I've calmed down in my middle age. But I got a chance to introduce a new character for this upcoming week. So here is Geist.
This character came from several different threads of thought. Neil's comments on magic on these boards. A tie-in with my GMing of a villain created by an event with Mentalla. The fact that I have never played a mentalist in RDU. The discussion between Eric and Neil and I about how mentalists are not frontline fighters, can de-rail plots and my own GMing of telepath character with frightening levels of Teep in SAS. And Eric's definitative Locke, the premier psi of RDU, who draws on the ambient psychic energy of everyone around him.
Quite a challenge to come up with a front line mentalist that was different. Giest was my ploy. He answers and draws power from the spirits of the dead. His attacks have no range... his defenses are decent for a beginning character to get in the middle of a tussle. And all of his plot-destroying powers? GM control limitation. Sure, he has clairsentience and telepathy... but only when the spirits deem it necessary to tell him.
So, here is Geist:

It is a star wars character, in a ship that is a sister class of the Falcoln. So all that was quite intentional.
But thanks Stephen, glad you liked it.

Very cool. What's funny is in my campaign, I just got a new player whose character, Professor N, talks to the dead. and that's his basis for many of his powers. The funny thing was in my campaign guidelines I mention how mentalists may suffer persecution. (The other player helping him forgot this point. :) )
So far so good, I need to get last episode up on the web.

This was a pencil drawing done at Saturday's gaming table. It is Eric's character, who hasn't had a ton of "air time' compared to his other characters. But he's a great character. I'll let Eric tell you about him.
Yes, I didn't ink it. The paper that I sketch on is not good enough quality to accept brush and/or quill... so this is another digital coloring over pencils. hey, I like the style. Your mileage may vary.

Just a note on the characters history... I made him up on the fly, as a "one shot" character for Eric to play. He's got an interesting history, tied into NPCs in my game.
Storn drew him PERFECTLY. I described him, and the picture came out EXACTLY like I'd always envisioned him. That is rare, but I love it when it happens. Too sweet, Storn.
:D
Eric has then taken him and run in making him a really interesting addition to the RDU.

Sheesh, give me some time to post... =)
The name Demon Star comes from the litteral translation of his species type's name. He is an offshoot of the Dazeurian race (Herculon (sp?) is the character's father); every few generations or so a Dazeurian is born with a somewhat different genetic pattern. This pattern creates the "Demon Star," an old racial warrior.
This particular character was born to a woman in Oklahoma, who, at the time, knew little of the father. He was just passing through, and all. Anyway, when Thomas (Demon Star's real name) was born, she was forced to keep him secret, as the small town never would have accepted such a creature in their midst (I'm from Oklahoma, so I know what I'm talking about...).
She filled him with images of heroes, knowing in her heart that he was a good boy, despite his outward appearance. When he was 13 or so, his father appeared, bearing gifts: the Dazeurian Battle Armour and Nova Web (the glowing gold thing on his wrist). He then explained some of where Thomas came from, and what he was.
Since then, Thomas has felt a physical pull towards space. He is an extremely bright lad, and delved into Astronomy and Astrophysics. His physical nature blossomed after that meeting, and he discovered that he has racial memories of his people that he can tap into from time to time. He fights with a style of combat totally alien to Earth, ingrained in his genetics to make him the perfect Dazeurian warrior.
The Nova Web allows him to fly and manipulate energy; specifically heat and light. It's an ancient alien artifact, so Thomas has only begun to tap into it's potential.
When he was around 18 or so, his mother contacted the Champions in Baltimore, and arranged for a meeting for Thomas. He was inducted into the rather small roster (the main characters having disappeared some time ago), and has been with them for about 2 years.

So... basically, when I created this character, I was in the midst of exploring the effect of alien races on earth's culture and metahuman population.
My main rift was to take all the "aliens" from Classic Enemies or other supplements, and make them more than the cookie cutter characters they were. All these Aliens, Hurculon, Thok, Quasar (from Serve & Protect), and others, were actually "Ambassadors" from the Confederation... an alien conglomeration/government that was watching Earth (for many reasons to complicated to go into here) and were waiting for the time to introduce themselves openly.
This has happened, and the UN has recognized these Ambassadors, and the Earth has found out that there is a wider universe out there to join. (Colonization, space travel, ambassadors to the stars, have all begun to take place, with the PCs leading the way, in many cases... my super hero world becoming a super science fiction world, really.)
Hurculon, being human looking, had long involved himself in human affairs, traveling the world, running businesses, etc., and Thomas "Demon Star's" mother was an affair he had. The fact that, born from that affair, was the legendary Dazeurian warrior they called the Demon Star, was a bit of a surprise. (Again, in the RDU, Hurculon's race is very human like, except for this revered "mutation" that appears every few generations.)
The best part of the character is that he is a very normal, friendly, respectful 19 year old... inside the seven foot tall alien mutate ultimate warrior body. It's a hoot to watch Eric play him.
Also, in our last game, Demon Star, for the first time, came into contact with an ancient, racial enemy, the Thanes or Arcane (see Alien Enemies) and went absolutely nutso berzerk without any clue as to why.
;)
The nice kid was shocked and horrified at his destructive and deadly behavior. (Normally he has a strong code vs. killing.) Further adventures, if and when we get to them, should be interesting.

Good stuff. I really like pose; it's very dynamic with a strong action feel. Do you lay down any shading in pencil before scanning it in, or do you just lay down the outlines for the sketch and let everything else come once it's on the computer?

Here is another pic that I did that fateful Saturday game. This is James character, Lily, in her Succubus form. Lily can shapeshift, but this is a form that is seperate and the other players aren't quite sure what is up with this considerably demonic form.
Also, over on the Green Ronin boards, Neil has typed up the first half of that Saturday's adventure. It is pretty cool. But I'm totally biased. It is under Storn's Character thread. I'll be posting Succubus over there too.

I can't say I pictured the goo stuff on her either, but it fits her.
Looking at the picture, I realized how much this is going to help me play here. My biggest problem with playing her in her demon form was remembering that she's still a woman (depending how loosely you'll allow the definition). I keep slipping into playing her as a guy-demon.
So, here's my thoughts on playing her in demon-form now: She's sorta like Faith from Buffy, only not as nice or polite. ;)

Due to my pulled neck muscle, James being sick, this week's MM game got cancelled. Next week is out due to business travel for Neil. So it will be two weeks before our game gets off the ground again.
But here are a couple of sketches that I did last week for this week's game. My players already spotted them, even though they were supposed to be villians. Oh well, that's what I get for sketching at the table. And yes, these ARE sketches... no color, no inks.

Thanks for these, Storn. I must admit, as someone just starting to learn to draw properly I actually quite enjoy seeing pictures like this in their 'rough and ready' stage (and with the occassional construction line). Both these guys look pretty good, especially Socket (although I'm not 100% convinced by the name :) ). Scope looks good but her helmet is ... odd. With a design like that, I'd almost be tempted to go with a name like 'Target' or 'Headshot' for that duel meaning.
BTW, I hate you for having already practiced enough to sketch figures this accurately ;).

Dear Storn,
I wonder if I could ask a favour ? Can you have a look at the Superhero Images thread and have a look at the artwork I have put up. The pieces were mostly done by my brother and a friend of mine called Paul Geelan. Tragically the latter vanished over a decade ago and has not been seen since.
But I would like to know what you think of them. They start on Page 10 and at present go to Page 14.
You might find the ones on Page 14 amusing.
Obviously I don't want an opinion on every one of them but a general view would be nice.

I have my reasons for "Socket" that cannot be divulged at this time.
As for Scope's headgear, its a doodle. I like it though... and why would you name yourself "Target" or "Headshot"... you might name another person that... by using those it is suggesting YOU are the victim.
Besides, she has all these Sight powers, like Tscopic, see in the dark. The mask is simply 1-way see-thru.

I know that I am going to regret posting this, but I feel that I have to say something. So, if this offends you Storn, I am sorry that it does.
I really feel that you were out of line here and let your emotions get the best of you. As someone posted earlier, Acroyear did not deserve a rant like this.
You yourself posted (upset?) that no one had any comments concerning the work, yet had downloaded it many times. Then when Acroyear gives his feelings and thoughts on it, you get annoyed and blast him.
You must realize that everything that Acroyear pointed out is simply his opinion on the matter, whether it be a sketch or a finished piece. If he doesn't like the color choices, that is his perogative. He also can change his mind, that is also his perogative. Art is way to subjective and lends itself to these types of comments. You should know this.
I begin to wonder if you really wanted comments on your sketches or just wanted your ego stroked. If it was the latter, you succeeded.
I had some actual art/sketches comments to make, but since it appears that all you want is a pat on the back, I will pass. Hopefully you didn't strain your neck muscles patting yourself on the back.
Next time, be careful what you ask for, you just might get it, as in this instance.

Cybertooth, I did admit (too late) that I was hoping for comments of whether or not the artwork was useful... or interesting....or how art impacts RPGs... stuff like that. Not really loooking for art critique of sketches. NOr was I really upset when I said that bit about 60 downloads and no comments... I was actually rather amused. But is my fault for not being clearer on what I expected from the outset.
But I was very annoyed at being taken to task for "watercolor" and "sketchy line" and "grayscale" over and over again when basically I'm offering this for free. And these complaints pre-date this thread and I was, well, annoyed. These sketches are my experiments, nothing more. But nothing less either... experimenting is how I get better. They are not for publication. I was just sharing them with all of you, hoping that someone besides MY gaming group will find a use for them. That's it.
If folks deign to critique the artwork... they can. But it is really ridiculous when I'm dashing these off in an hour or two. They AIN"T finals! And I retain the right say that a critique is wrong. After all, I'm the final arbiter of the artwork when its MINE and not for a client. And I'm the guy who has returns to the studio the next day to try and get better.
Is it Ego-stroking? Yes, probably it is. But I'm not getting paid for doing this. Should I get nothing? Should I kowtow to demand and do perfect line drawings so y'all can photoshop and marker color away on MY art to your heart's content? Here is where my Ego says' I don't think so'.
I know that I've pissed you and at least Acroyear off (and probably several others). I'm sorry that it has happened... but I'm not sorry for the things that I've said or feel. I will continue to post my doodles as long as someone finds it helpful or fun or entertaining. But let me end with I do appreciate that you took the time to defend Acroyear and write down your words. It shows that you care. That is all right in my book.

$45.oo per Figure. The star wars pic posted earlier in this thread, the spaceship was considered a figure. Complex backgrounds, which the star wars pic was not a complex background, would also be considered a figure.
You get a 300 dpi file. Suitable for priting. Most of the time, there is no true original anyway, since at least 1/2 of it is done digitally. I get to use the image if I want for portfolio, publishing ventures, etc. etc. Including getting to post it on websites like this to promote my meager talents. However, I do not presume to "own" the character... just the image.
Contact info is on my website, which should be back up today or tomorrow.

This is Scale, the leader of Triple S, a Viper team. He has the ability to judge weight, mass, velocity... which gives him an edge in combat. He is brilliant, but a bit arrogant. He's is precisely the type of villain to tell you his evil plan AS he is doing it to you. "do you know that it only takes 3 pounds of pressure to snap this hostages' neck?" kinda-thing. But for a snake mutagen guy, he's got a sense of humor and is pretty well-adjusted.... for a Viper villian.
Oh yeah, the continuing saga of UNTIL Black Ops has been posted, along with Scale's MM stats on my Green Ronin thread...

Thank you Enforcer, that is really nice stuff to hear. But if I can improve, anyone can. So don't sell yourself short.
I was doing Dark Champions stuff while in art school at 26...that was 10 years ago. I was told that art school would take 10 years to sink in, to really grasp, after graduating. I think in many respects my teachers were right. I'm only feeling that I'm starting to "get it" right now.

Oh, if someone requested a higher dpi, I would certainly accomadate. It is just that color at 300 dpi can usually make it past everyone's firewalls. Anything larger tends to get tripped up somewhere along in the process.
Most likely, I would have to burn a CD-R if it was 600 dpi. I wouldn't work any larger than that, simply because it would take every thing I did extra time if I was working at 1200 dpi.
I have no plans to attend DragonCon (thats Atlanta, right?). I should be able to make it to Origins though.

I never make it up to Origins, though it should probably be on my list of 'things to do before I die.'
It would be neat to have a couple of prints hanging on my wall of the hero groups of the two major Champions campaigns I've run. Do you charge more for group shots? No individual portraits would be needed unless the players request it. Okay, maybe one for a character of whom I would be interested in seeing your conception. Of course, that one would be the standard rate. Oddly enough, he's not really a favorite character; I've always had trouble visualizing him and would enjoy seeing what you could do with him.

I charge $45.00 per figure in the picture. So a group shot of 5 would be $225.00. Of course, 5 seperate portraits of 1 figure each would cost the same amount.

I'm not the main GM, RDU Neil is. It would be his decision. I would start talking to him if you are serious. I co-run (using Mutants and Masterminds, while he uses Champions). The game is in Ypsilanti, so it is a bit of drive for me (but worth it).

I've never seen the Anime... but from what I understand, the RDU Locke has gone in a very different direction than the anime Locke. (I'm really not a fan of allowing players to "ripoff" character whole heartedly. I challenge them to make something new out of an established concept, and I think Eric did, here.)
Our Locke has died and been reborn a number of times... this last time in a truly different configuration. One the top three most power Psi's in the world. Very dangerous... and definitely heading toward cosmic. ;)

Yes. I have an idea for a makeover for my longest running character. And I have James's character inked, but not scanned or colored yet.
As for Bill's iconic character Thermal... you might recognize this:
This iconic Champions character was sorta "dad". "Dad" has been usurped, replaced, as is custom. So, if you download the sucker, you can see I've drawn this character a couple of times (FReD? and CKC)

I'm a big fan of the Street Fighter games, so I can't deny that Dee Jay didn't come to mind when I was thinking of a costume for Chango.
Actually, I originally wasn't going to have him wear any sort of costume, but in the first game I had him show up in these clothes and they helped define the character, so the outfit stuck around.

something a bit different from most superhero portraits. This is my longest running character (the guy in the middle). He has been in the superhero biz for over 10 years of his life. I realize I had to update his portrait and put some gray in his hair and some lines on his face!
Since this is my main character, I can wax poetic a bit here!
From left to right, Hope, Max and Karen St. Clair. Max is better known as Vector and is a telekinetic. Karen is better known as Oracle and is a Precog and Mentalist and used to be a member of Sentinels of the North (Canada's superteam). She is actually a published character (Champions of the North, 4th ed Hero) who Max fell head over heels for.
Hope was born Jan 1st, 2000 (to steal a page from Jenny Sparks... the good borrow, Genius steals!). Game time is about 2 or 1 and 1/2 years behind our own.
The t-shirt is an homage to one of the superteams, the Mavericks, Vector help create. Mavericks are NYC's premier team now, lead by Wildheart... hence the little heart symbol... auntie Megan is so nice!
Vector's armor is important element of RDU, made of Crystaltech and responds to his telekinesis.
Thanks to RDU Neil for allowing me to bring this complex character so far!

He no-know. :) So, he suggested that I post in this thread and ask the assembled Herodom what they thought of the look of this character and any suggestions for her abilities or usage.
He also mentioned that his GM was using her as a re-tooled updated design for Doc Sonic of the Protectors, but I don't feel that she's geeky enough for Doc S, myself.
I was thinking, with the oddly stlyed bodysuit, how it seems to shimmer, maybe a solar-powered brick? Not enough female flying bricks, IMO.

I definitely WAS going to use her as an updated Doc Sonic... but then I saw the actual updated picture, and figured I'd keep her as she was.
I recently introduced the character as a "mystery woman" who was involved with a recent adventure in California. She didn't give her name... but I know who she'll be in my mind. I have an idea of introducing her over time, hoping the PCs will be interested in finding out more about her.
We'll see if it works.

It's been a VERY long time since I saw the anime, and I only ever saw it in Japanese so I have no idea what it was about, really. =) I just remember liking the name and the image, and the level of psychic powers. When I created my character, Neil asked me to focus more on the mental powers, and less on the TK, as Storn already had a major PC with that focus (who was, in fact, the "boss" of the superteam, although he was essentially retired). I understood, and shifted things. When Storn took a hiatus from the game, I was presented with an opportunity to reconfigure some powers, so I started working with Psychokineses as well as Telepathy effects.
Storn is back in the game, and again, I am presented with another opportunity to change powers. Funny how that works...
All in all, this has been one of my favourite characters to ever play, and certainly one of my longest (6 or 7 years now). Through real, honest roleplaying, the character has grown so much. He started out essentially a punk kid, almost a villain, really (he was designed to be a psychic assassin of some kind, and when he escaped, used his powers with no thought as to the consequences), and now has gone so far as to sacrifice himself to save the world (threw down with Menton, and kicked his butt, at the cost of his own life - boosted with 300 points (bringing him to around 850), with a MAJOR side effect - death).

Veer was activated just a few years ago when a huge lab of Malachite's smashed into a Congo (actually Rwanda, but the border is in dispute) mountain side. Veer is a leader of a bunch of Malachite genetic experiments, trying to hide in the thick terrain of that area. The Black Ops Team met Veer last night. That was Wild Heart. She doesn't fly, unless it was courtesy of my character Vector (not Veer, Veer's the clone) teke abilities. Wild Heart is RDU Neil's character and the leader of NYC's indomitable Mavericks. They were a couple for a short period way back in time... something that Veer has flashes of <g>. Storn,
Just out of curiousity, how long does it take you draw a character to the point that they are when you submit them to the board?
Is it a sit-down-one-afternoon thing, or does it take several days?
As a non-artistic type, I am always amazed at the speed at which some individuals can crank out drawings. Your work has always impressed me as top notch so I was just wondering how quickly they "flow from your head to paper".

About 2-3 hours, pencils to inks to scanned to colored. Some can take a bit longer, the folds in the clothing of the "lion" like one I just posted took some thought in the pencil and ink stage. He might ahve been 3 or 4 hours, I odn't really keep track.
I think I'm fairly quick. But single figures, I've been doing a long time, I'm comfortable doing them. Backgroounds, storytelling, objects, multiple figures interacting, perspective all make for a lot more complexity... a full collored full page "scene" could take 1 to 2 days, Ninja Hero cover took me a week.
Somedays are faster than others too...somedays it flows off the pencil.

That is truly incredible! Considering that you are doing the coloring and everything!
We used to have an artist in our group that would draw characters and such from time to time, but it would take him about a day or so. He was a serious perfectionist as well which might explain the slowness.
He is currently working as a commercial artist. At least he was the last time I talked to him...

Hey Storn,
I've worked up a PDF of tent minis based on a selection of characters from this thread and its counterpart on the Green Ronin board. With your permission, I'd like to post them here for everyone to enjoy.
Included are:
Dreyogg
Generic Guy
Kid Cobalt
Geist
Demonstar
Thunderbird
Milo
Locke
Chango
Veer
Condor
UNTIL agent
Cyblade
Marie Gerrrmond
Dark Cloud agent
Scallion
I've also got a pic of Fortune that looks like it should be in this group, but since I got it from your website rather than either thread, I've not placed it in the PDF intended for sharing.
So whaddya say?

Yup, another watercolor like one. Obviously a character in a sci fi game that should be obvious when you open the link.
The character is Bob Fletchers... to give credit where credit is due.

However, does he have 3 toes and 4 fingers? Not impossible, I know, but I wasn't sure.
Martial artist with force field of some kind?

Yes, I didn't ink it. The paper that I sketch on is not good enough quality to accept brush and/or quill... so this is another digital coloring over pencils. hey, I like the style. Your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Most of these pics are for my own gaming group. They have nothing to do with Champions or Hero Games or even Mutants and Mastermind's settings. But if a character comes up that it would be appropriate to use one of these pics, I will certainly do so. But the odds of that are probably slim.

The zip file is too big for an attachment, so I threw it in a directory on my website. I'll probably need that space eventually, but I can leave it up for at least a month or two. If it's OK with you, I'll PM Ben about putting it on the free stuff page, maybe with the other 13 slots filled with something.

It's actually easier to do those for artists less talented than Storn. For instance, the energy effects make the rear silhouettes tough, but I think they came out pretty cool.

Actually, the card theme came from the fact in the last ep, my character, an ex-stage magician (it was a stage in his life, pun intended, he is happier being a cabbie) used his "real" magic to give everyone a token. This token in game terms was an extra reroll much like a Hero Pt in M&M. In the setting, I gave each character a king from the deck of cards (actually doing it at the table). George (my PC) would not recover his Essense til a card was tossed, a token used.
Each king suit sorta "fit" each of the pcs... including my pc. I just incorporated into the portraits, using Aces cause at that scale, it would be a hell of a lot easier to draw than kings.
There is not a group identity as such. Each of the four pcs have become very good friends over the last few adventures... a band of brothers, so to speak. The friendship among them is some of the best and most rewarding roleplaying I've had the opportunity to be a part of. Very exciting stuff, not so much to write aobut, but to experience... it is a blast.

I can run you off a print for $12.00. I don't think you have to be insanely wealthy to afford that. If you want to buy the original, it would be a bit more, but nothing astronomical.
The original is monochromatic blue. So you have a choice of monochromatic blue or the gray that it printed in. It isn't a huge piece, pretty compact. But it is a fav of a friend of mine too. It was for him that I drew the piano getting shot up. He's taking piano.
In fact, if anyone wants a print of something, its 12.00.

8.5 x 11, landscape in this case, is the size of the print. I could send out for a print to be made (be more expensive), but I wouldn't suggest it. The original is only around 8" wide, 5" tall. I can re-scan at really high res and blow it up a smidge, but blowing up artwork is never a really good idea. I wouldn't recommend going past 10" wide

I am not an expert on this, but isn't it a little unprofessional to put a picture which, I assume, DOJ ownes the rights to onto the M&M message boards? I know the picture of crouching panther man was published in Champions. I do not know if DOJ purchased the rights to the picture, but in any event I would not think they would want the picture on their competitor's message boards; especially considering that they do not make a habit of giving away book art on their own webpage.

Why not? both images are on my website. FREE, absolutely FREE advertising for Hero games. I gave appropriate credit. Who in their right mind would turn down FREE advertising?
If anyone should bitch, it should be Green Ronin for my using their boards to advertise for Hero. But my game uses M&M, so i'm advertising for them as well. And I hope we can be accepting of cross pollenation here. It is good for both companies, good for my campaign, good for fans of both systems, good for me.
But c'mon! This falls under FAIR USE. I wasn't really advertising my art or Hero or M&M. I was talking about my game. Which isn't for profit. I'm using Grond(s) in my storyline as a hobbyist in this industry. If an avatar can be used from all sorts of sources... including yours, MONO, from Green Ronin on these Hero boards... this is a stupid line to draw.

Since it was posted to their message board, he didn't need permission. It's a thread about his game, and the artwork is *his* artwork. Seriously, I don't see what the big deal is. As Storn pointed out, both pieces are available from his website, for free. If Hero didn't have a problem with it being on his site, why would they have a problem with him posting it to a thread about his M&M game? It's set in a world that uses alot of characters from Champions, so it's obvious that some champs character would show up in the game.

Ya know, I'd kind of leave it to the person who's profession it is to decide that. Is this a question of professional ethics, or one of copyright? I can't see an ethical problem, since DOJ has repeatedly said that the competition is a good thing, and there's less animosity between companies than there is between fanboys. Supers is a small sub-genre, and all of these companies' products drive each others' sales. As for the copyright issues, I'm guessing that Storn knows what he is and is not allowed to do with his work, considering he's the one who has the contract for that work. I'd also -- and this is just a wild guess -- assume that Storn knows how DOJ feels about such use, having done the volume of work he's done for DOJ.

So what if it is rude? I expect a certain amount of professionalism from Storn. Storn is not like the rest of us; he makes part of his living from DOJ. At the very least he should not be giving away things that DOJ themselves are not willing to give away.
As far as your second sentence, I am sure DOJ does not even know that Storn has posted the picture to the M&M site. I have in the past seen Steve admonish Storn on these very message boards for being a little too free with the posting of artwork owned by DOJ though. Storn loves his art, and he loves to showoff his art, but either way he does need to maintain his professionalism.
Now as to your third sentence, nothing on these message boards is really our business but it never stops anyone from posting about it, does it? :)

I think DOJ doesn't need a Mommy to constantly look out for its interest. DOJ has shown itself to be a big company now, so you can quit pissing on someone's fun for a minute and relax. Steve reads these boards, and can find the pics on the MnM site the same way you did. If you're that concerned, you can send the link to Steve and let him handle it. There wa no need to derail a fun thread.
Apparently the Storn fanboys are out in full force today.
Whatever PG. You spend your time defending Storn and I'll spend my time calling him unprofessional. Either way I have a right to express my opinion, and you cannot take that away from me. I will tell you a secret though. The best way to "rerail" a thread is to not continue arguing with people you disagree with. Just make your EGO roll and ignore their (in this case my) posts if you do not like them.

Oh, and as long as we're playing Copyright Mommy... Does Green Ronin know you're using their copyrighted art as your avatar? And do they mind you're using it as an avatar on a competitor's site? There's something called creative control, you know, so I'm a bit curious on that one. I'm just asking since I'm curious about your own level of professionalism (legality, ethics) regarding these matters.

The way you use the phrase "Storn fanboys", you make it sound like it's a bad thing to like Storn's art. You do happen to be in a thread called "Storn's Art & Characters thread", which happens to be frequented by Storn fanboys. I don't know why you have to have such a severe attitude about the whole thing.

I am not a professional. I am a fan. There is a difference there. Storn gets paid to uphold the ideals of the company he works for. I pay for the right (by buying the book) to use things within it for personal use. If GR asked me to remove the avatar I would. That is the extent of my professionalism.
I would also suggest you take a step back and not take this to a personally attack level. I am not attacking you, and by your own statement above perhaps Storn does not need you to be his "mommy" and he can fight his own battles too.

I'm impressed by the logic of your opening line, Mon. You're brilliant.
I'm not defending Storn, I'm attacking you. Small difference. I don't really care much about Storn's ego-stroking in this thread, or in any of the various and sundry other Storn art-gallery threads on message boards (MnM, RPG.net), so much as the fact that you're being a bitch on this thread, and some other people were getting entertainment value out of it.
Storn's a good artist, and he's running and playing in a pretty interesting campaign. So, what was your motive for pissing on the fun of the folks who like this thread? I think it's because you're a big wanking DOJ fanboy (or girl, you frequently argue with feminine logic) at heart, and you're jealous (female logic) of other systems or criticisms to your favorite system. I suspect you were feeling a bit bitchy today (menopause? female logic...) and just wanted to torpedo this thread...

So, you're saying that you don't have to follow those piddly copyright laws or respect someone's intellectual property? Cool beans.
Ok, if you aren't attacking me (you probably will be after you read that last post though), then I'll lay off of you. Fair enough. You seem unreasonably cranky today, though.

Nato, I made my statement, and have since been nothing more than responding to fanboys who seem to think that Storn can do no wrong. I like Storn's artwork, just as I like your artwork, but I think there should be a certain amount of loyalty to the company who pays you. Storn crosses that line by splashing company-owned artwork all over the internet when DOJ, buy Steve's own statements made many times on these message boards, has no desire to give out that artwork yet. It is one thing for Storn to give away art which he owns. It is another thing to give away art which he does not own, IMO.

This is totally aside from the argument at hand. I just want to take a time out to point out to the viewers at home that this is NOT how copyright law works. You do NOT buy the right to scan items out of a book you've bought and then publically display them.

Gee, how many misogynistic statements can one person make in one post? No wonder gamers never get laid. :)

Which is why I stated I would remove it if GR asked me too. Too bad you did not read that part. :)

You just don't know the right gamers. :p
Not misogynistic, really, just trying to get a rise out of you. You do argue from a feminine perspective, and frequently, yet you also take a highly logical approach at other times. Leads me to believe your avatar isn't representative of your gender. The dramatization of the gender cues were just cheap shots b/c I didn't like your attitude. But since we're not being personal, you can disregard those now. :D
