I just picked up a copy of the classic comic Snarf Quest at FLGS.
I forgot how funny it was.

Anyone ever run this universe, or do any write ups for it?

It is MOSTLY fantasy, but sci-fi and modern makes some appearances.

Haven't, but I remember it in Dragon and have an issue or two with Snarfquest in it. Am I supposed to reminisce or feel old? :D

Old, like I do :)

My 12yo thinks it is "cute, but doesn't make sense".

She misses the point, that that IS the point.

If anyone else wants it (the Graphic Novel format)- I saw some copies at GenCon last year, surely will be again.

It's not based on the Thundercats, is it? Man I hope not....

Nope, lol.

Snarf is the bat-eared, beagle looking thingy in the middle.

While looking for that image, I found out:

d20 RPG book! I might have to pick it up and force some conversions myself :)

There used to be a card game and some metal miniatures too.

In a gaming group I used to play with, I picked up the reputation for pointing this out, so here goes:

That guy on the FH Companion looks like Geezil from Snarfquest.

Considering that Larry Elmore did both Snarfquest and the cover of the FH Companion, it's not truly surprising.

Oh, by the Mother Earth Herself.

Now I know where Jar Jar Binks came from. Pardon. I must go find some rope. And a ladder. Maybe a Tori Amos album.

My ex had a signed copy of that book.
Because Larry Elmore was a fairly close neighbor of her Aunt, not from any sort of convention signing.

Bite your tongue. Snarfenja diGottago is no Jar Jar. He's da king a da zeetvahs!

Seriously, Snarf looks weird, but he's actually amusing. Although I'm afraid you may have poisoned him for me now....

As i said before (and may have posted it, but E is right):

If the following three conditions are met:

- I have the means (rope, blade, etc.)
- I have the motive (a copy of Wraith: The Oblivion)
- I have the music (any Tori Amos album)

Call 911, 'cause Thia's goin' off the deep end. I can't kill George Lucas. Oh, wait. Nevermind. This is the man who refuses to simply release the recently released repolished, un-****-ed with editions of the Holy Trilogy, and who further claims to have "taped over" the originals. Oh yeah. I can kill that cat.

He refuses to release the original versions? Jerk.
"I originally meant to have JotunPanzers walking through the background in Raiders, but we did not have the tech for the SFX yet..."

Sprechen of which... Did they change Darth Vader's name in the German release? if not... I can imagine the Empire release...
"Ja, of course he is Luke's Vater, that is his name, for Gott's sake."

So- how bad is it to convert d20 to Hero?

*pauses* Are you asking me, directly, cause I've done it and I'm on the thread, or are you asking generically?

Simply put, if you're doing a conversion, there are a lot of things to bear in mind. What exactly do you want to take? First thing i'll say: you should NOT try and "convert" things whole cloth. Because we don't use Hit Points, but STUN and BODY, we have a completely different mechanic for how things work. In terms of damages for weapons, things are fairly consistent. 2d6 is 2d6 - a great sword/zweihander. A small pistol is 1d6+1, a short sword is 1d6. So far, so good. Converting damage, easy.

Next up, races! Building a racial package is a simple matter. I have an HR in my campaign which I did expressly to imitate the d20 system. Within a Racial Package, the disads of the race count against the bonuses/abilities they have. So if you have a racial package with 35 points in powers/skills, and 30 points in disads, it costs the PC a whopping 5 points. This simulates d20 very well.

Second are classes. If you're going to do classes, the easiest way to do it is simply taking the powers the class has, converting them individually into HERO, and then letting people purchase 'class powers' as they go up in level. Equally important, though, are building in 'Feats' - those abilities which people learn as they level up that enhance the powers they already have. You can choose to recreate the Feat-Chain system in d20 very easily in HERO. You simply include custom limitations "prerequisites" and you place them in the stat block, just as d20 does. I would wager its -1/4 for each prerequisite. So a Feat with 4 pre-reqs will have a full -1. Happens more often than you think. Weapon Feats will have OIF (Weapons of Opportunity, -1/2) or OAF (Specific Weapon Type, -1) or OAF (Specific Weapon, -2). And, being HERO, we can argue ad nauseum about how best to do it, but hey! You asked!

Then there are the spells. Here's where you're going to slam into your brick wall. There is no magic system in Hero. I was stunned to discover this originally. It ain't there. There's all the tools to BUILD a magic system, but there's no actual 'magic system.' Not unless you get Turakian Age, I think, there's one in there, and it's good. But. Killer Shrike's site is probably the best resource for magic in d20 in general, but my developmental processes have changed from his, so I have my own take on it now.

Regardless of that. That'll take you the most time, period. The rest of it is fairly easy to do. Ultimately, if you just want the setting, then you put together some class & race basics and go to town. The setting becomes most important. But if there's one thing I'm learning, and loving, about HERO is that there really are no limits.

Oh. And if you insist on truly 'Converting' things over, then you have to make all armor offer DCV, not DEF. And then do a reverse algorithm to derive Hit Points from an individuals STUN & BODY. Then, after your head explodes, we steal your books.

I mean. We help you look. For the pieces. Yeah.

Oh... uhm... yeah....
I think I will just convert the races and bestiary.

Fantasy Hero is good for everything else. That's what it is meant to do.
Buy the book, people!

I wouldn't mind running a Snarf Quest campaign, although if I don't use FH, I'd use AD&D 1st or 2nd Edition. Since zeetvahs are basically humans in funny suits anyway, I'd treat them like humans. Their appearance would be a Distinctive Feature.
