View Full Version : DC Animated-style drawing?

Trebuchet
Jun 8th, '03, 08:19 AM
Somebody here in the boards posted a website or instructions for doing DC style character drawings. I've been struggling for a year to figure out a good way to get a drawing of my character Zl'f, and I figure DC style might finally get it to work.

Does anyone here remember where those instructions were?

It's been posted a few times :)

http://www.wuji-web.com/multiverse.html

The tutorial style thing was at...
http://formula119.com/eqtaa/index2.html

I enjoy using them for design, mostly. However, in my recent scribblings for a campaign setting, I've been using the templates almost exclusively for speed and fun.

There's another batch of templates at:

http://users.ev1.net/~kryptcom/templates.html

If you'd like me to take a stab at drawing your character, I'd be happy to volunteer my meager talents.

Isn't someone working on a program to allow people to draw DC animation style characters? Thought I saw it in alpha-testing.

It's frustrating to know just what your character looks like in your head but be totally unable to put in on paper. I have the drawing capability of a worm. :(

What I always do, is to take a photo of a model or actor/actress from a magazine. I take the one who's closest to how I visualize my characters.

And the grown-up Kirsten Dunst from "Spider-man" is much too curvaceous (Not to mention top heavy!).

Finding out about the DC Animation stuff that Winterhawk mentioned in the Superhero Images thread was a real turning point for me. I surfed around, got a lot of templates and started working.

The game is on a bit of a hiatus right now because players are having some time (and membership) issues, but the following images indicate what can be done by someone with little freehand drawing ability:

http://www.digitalindalo.com/rpg/hero/Megawatti2.gif
which is my girlfriends character, who can also be found in various stages of development here (http://www.digitalindalo.com/rpg/hero/Megawatti.gif) and here in a much earlier form (http://www.digitalindalo.com/rpg/hero/Megawatt.gif). I prefer the more buxom versions myself.

Of course there are the bad guys (http://www.digitalindalo.com/rpg/hero/adventure_three.html) from the last adventure. I have more, but most of the other PCs are still in development (here's an older group picture (http://www.digitalindalo.com/rpg/hero/grouppic.htm) however).

I use Illustrator to retrace the template images, which I can then modify as I wish. I add stuff, change heights, subtract stuff, etc. its much easier that way and I am used to Illustrator from doing Trek deckplans. The earlier form of Madam Megawatt and the later forms for example are different in that I readjusted the height simply by dragging selected line-shapes 'down' and to the 'right' slightly, then readjusting the head and some other components so that they match back up. I am presently trying to learn how to use shadows on the images, which really improves their look.

Very nice, Publius! I'd love to do a group picture of our team. Maybe once I figure out how to do my own character I can tackle a group picture. Most of our characters would be pretty simple.

I don't have Illustrator, but I do have Photoshop 6 and Paint Shop Pro 7. I've also go a little freeware graphics editor called iMage, which is like Paint². It's vastly more capable than Paint but loads easier to use than Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

How is this (http://www.digitalindalo.com/rpg/hero/blonde2.gif) Trebuchet? Am I close? I modified that basic body style with less hip and less... other stuff than the original. I can't really do faces that actually look like someone in particular, but I tried for the cute and innocent type (upturned nose, perky smile etc.).

I like curvy women myself, but I don't need to have sexual fantasies about my characters. :)

My character is very small and petite; she's only 4'10" tall (A former Olympic gymnast). She's built like a 14-year old even though she's 20, so she has slim hips and small breasts. You got the body about right, although the hair is a bit too short (It hangs to mid-thigh.) and it's generally bound in a ponytail when she's adventuring.

The costume is more problematical. As I envision it, she wears a white sleeveless and strapless bodysuit cut high on the hips. Over that she wears a short white "poncho" belted at the waist and which hangs down as far as the bodysuit , her shoulders are bare as are her arms, legs and feet.

If you're interested I can e-mail you the picture I got the costume idea from. It's harder to describe than draw.

Her's a picture of Zl'f I've managed to put together after much struggling with Paint. It captures the general appearance pretty well I think, as well as her essence. Hopefully she looks like a teenager, at least. I still can't get the costume quite right.

From what I can tell the one I posted combines the 1998 DC character book, plus all the slim (how to draw Batman, Superman, etc) into one volume.

My son and I both have been using it (granted, he's doing better then I am, but then again my hand eye coordination is almost shot), so I recomend it to anyone who wants to do quick simple drawings. My only problem with it is they don't really go into detail on how to do faces, expressions, yes, but not clear directions on eyes/mouths.

Here's how Zl'f compares size-wise to a typical 6'3" male superhero. (At 4'10" tall, she's shorter than the average American 12-year-old girl.)

Hate to say this, but I'm pretty certain that picture is off. I'm 6'3", and one of my friends -- 5'4" -- doesn't quite come up to my shoulder. On the other hand, I've done the copy/resize bit, 4'10" being 77% of 6'3", and it matches, more or less...

Scary, that.

Slightly off topic... Does anyone know of other templates sites (NON DCU) that are available for character creation? Long ago, there were seven or so, but all of those urls are all gone. Does anyone know their new homes?

Scary, that. I'm also 6'3", and my girlfriend of 22 years is 5'5" tall and well above my shoulder. If your friend is below your shoulder then you're either mistaken about her height, you have a very small head, or you have no neck. :D

I also checked the image with the 4'10" being 77% of 6'3" bit before I first posted the picture here and it was close enough for government work, considering the female figure isn't standing up straight like the male one and that she's got hair. (It's sorta hard to calculate heights accurately from perspective drawings like this. I measured from bottom edge of heel to top of head.) And of course I'm making an unsupported assumption that a good superheroic male is 6'3". (A superhero should be at least as tall as I am, right?)

Wyrm Ouroboros

I may be wrong about her height, yah. On the other hand ...

Let's go see the Marvel site. Who do we have?

Pip the Troll: 4'4"
Wolverine: 5'3"
Wasp: 5'4"
Shadowcat: 5'6"
Phoenix/Jean Grey: 5'6"
Phoenix/Rachel Summers: 5'7"
Rogue: 5'8"
Nightcrawler: 5'9"
Spider-Man: 5'10".
Psylocke: 5'11"
Beast: 5'11"
Angel: 6'0".
Thing: 6'0"
Sub-Mariner: 6'2".
Captain America (Steve Rogers): 6'2".
Cyclops: 6'3"
Silver Surfer: 6'4"
Thor: 6'6"
The Hulk: (Banner) 5'9", (Grey) 6'6", (Green) 7'0"
Colossus: (Regular) 6'6" (Armored) 7'5"

So I'd guess that the average is about 6' for the males, 5'7" for the females. Okay, don't ask about Pip the Troll. I'd've put Puck in there, but they don't have any information about him, durn it...

That about right? I made the skintone a bit more "ruddy" than my usual, tried to match the blonde with the one in your pic (which was very nicely done btw) and tweaked the shadows so that they would hug the garments properly. The other picture that I had was in a red 'bodysuit' because that whole outline was a single shape. I just changed the shape's interior color from red to that of skin tone and drew the clothing on top, making the interior of that shape white. Add a few lines for garment folds and voile! Didn't take overly long using Illustrator.

Is there some sort of piping along the top collar? should the top collar be lower? Did I get the skort thing right?

Hi

Quick suggestion - could you move the iris' of the eyes up a little so they are not round in the center of the eyeball. It gives her a rather unnatural wide eyed look. I usually find 3/4 of the iris (in this case green) gives a better look.

Thanks for listenin'

Is there some sort of piping along the top collar? should the top collar be lower? Did I get the skort thing right? Very nice, Publius! I like that. I picture her face as being a bit more triangular with high cheekbones; she's an ethnic Russian (and Russian citizen); hence the name: Zl'f, Russian for "pixie" or "sprite". The similarity to the Greek word "sylph" is obvious, and both words come from the same ancient Greek word for butterfly. She is supposed to be very pale (Not vampiric!); with a light dusting of freckles on her face and shoulders.

Her costume is supposed to be a white short belted cotton gauze "poncho" over a strapless white spandex bodysuit. The picture I did just doesn't have it right, but it's the best I've managed so far. (I've been considering simply changing it to a tunic or long sleeved shirt, perhaps one of those traditional Russian-style puffy-sleeved/high collar ones with the buttons over to the side rather than centered.) It's supposed to be short, she's a gymnast and needs freedom of movement. It should be off the shoulders, but you've got the length about right. I envisioned some type of geometrical pattern along the edges of the shirt, perhaps embroidered butterflys (which would be too small to show at this scale anyway.) or flowers.

If you'll e-mail me your e-mail address, I'll send you a copy of the picture where I got the basic idea for the costume. (You can't send e-mail attachments through the forum.)

I'm not familiiar with Pip the Troll, but excepting him Zl'f is still apparently shorter than anyone else (human, anyway) in the Marvel universe, even Wolverine who is often called "short stuff". As I said, 4'10" is shorter than an average American 12-year-old girl.

Made dress off the shoulder, at least on one side. added freckles, more angular face and lightened skintone (looking at your own pic I thought you wanted it more red-pink, but this is a lighter fleshtone). Not much I can do about the dress at the moment and I'm going to be pretty busy for the upcoming while, but I threw on something vaguely floral looking as an edge pattern (w/o the green line btw you cannot even see that stuff).

Scary, that.

I should point out that many of the male images are standing upright, while the females are standing with their hips cocked strongly to one side & many have their shoulders slightly tilted.

This makes them look alot smaller than they are.

Then the next... next...

This is one seriously choppy method, but I managed to button monkey my way through it.

1. Write in the massage field, this is important for part 3 below because if you don;t it gives you an error message. No I don;t know why.
2. go down to "attach file" hit browse and find your pic. Obviously you have to hit ok in the window or nothing happens.
3. here is where I have been completely stumped previously, the only way I have been able to do this is by selecting the whole address for the file in the "Attach file" field, then hitting enter. I have no idea why this is the only thing that works for me, other methods are no doubt more clean/clear. BTW, this posts the message.
4. In the message shoiuld be a link to the attachment. So far so good. Now, real quick like right click on the link for the attached file and go down to "copy shortcut",
5. then (again real quick like) hit the "edit" button and jump back into your post. Wherever you wish the image to appear type

(shift+,)img src=" "(shift+.)

Now of course (shift+,) refers to the < character and (shift+.) is his buddy >, but if I put that in above, the system thinks I am trying to imbed an image and you get a dead pic box.
6. Now go to the " " part of the code you just typed in, and between the double quotes paste the link you have already copied in step 4. Myself I keep an extra window open and have done the code in advance, paste the attached file shortcut inside, select/copy that and paste it whole in the spot I want, but you do whatever you understand best.
7. Tell it to save changes, and it should look about right.

In order to double check that I got the friggin' nasty hackjob right, let me post something down here. My pic for an as yet untitled hero/villain/NPC/something-or-other

Perhaps the DCU designers felt that having the girls stand straight with their shoulder back like the male poses would accentuate the chest too much.

did this here at work without the use of photoshop. all I have here at work is general Paint which most pc's have on them. while not as "clean" as those done with photoshop I did this to show those that lack it that they still can do decent pics in this style.

as far as the pic itself it is a character that I have been working on for a while now. this version is not all that great and lacks some details ando coloring but given it was done in 24bit Paint I think it came out all right given my tools...

For those who are intreasted DK has come out with Guides to the Batman and Superman Animated show. $9.99 apiece and are like their other Guide counterparts (X-Men, Superman, Batman, etc). Each page or two details a different character (or on some pages 2 ) from the show.

Most probably wouldn't be intreasted but I thought I would mention it.

If you'd like me to take a stab at drawing your character, I'd be happy to volunteer my meager talents.

Just out of curiousity, Winterhawk, what would you need in
order to do a DC-style picture of someone's character?

Acroyer do you have a web site? The two or three actual drawings I have seen from you (rather than mods) have been quite good.

of course I just implied that your mods aren't good but that is untrue. Everything I have seen from you has been good.

You can see some hastily done stuff at www.thefumbler.com/champions That's a couple years old, at least.

I was pounding those out as fast as I could, taking every shortcut possible (and before anyone says anything, Padarox is supposed to be bigger on one side than the other. Half of him is on fire and the other half is coated with ice. I seem to get that complaint from anyone who sees that image.) Bonechiller in there is actually a modified scan of Pat Zircher's Fiacho (example of taking a shortcut). Most people can only tell if I point it out.

The very first post on this board "Welcome Home Champions" has my Starman, green lantern clone guy in it (see avatar). That's about my average quality for the amount of time I put in.

I'm certainly no pro, but I like to think I'm not bad.

There's some photo manipulations there, too, in the news section. Not a lot. Here's a few samples...
