View Full Version : Support The Online Cause

Over time, and again most recently I have been adding the hero support to OpenRPG, a nice free virtual tabletop system. Having worked on the heroic die roller in the past and finishing up the Hero Turn Tracker, I am sending out a request.
Let's get a resource package together. I would like to see an open source, free, uninhibited distribution which supports Hero Gaming. There are elements which would be great to gather together and I am sure there are people out there with the skill to do it. The following are things which would be great to have:
Character Sheets : I think there is one out there, but it would be great to get it reviewed for content and make sure there are both normal and heroic sheets. Even better, of course, would be an export template from HD.
Maps : Most maps out there are gridded or 1 meter hexed. It would be great to gather together a series of hexed maps for the different genres such as out doors, street, inside buildings, etc. I would be looking for new, license free maps which are all set for OpenRPG so the GM does not need to wander the internet to get all of his resources and any hosters do not need to worry about the legitimacy of the content. If you have designed maps that you are willing to share (even without gridlines), that would be way cool.
Minis : A must, it would be great to get genre minis which do not suck. This is probably better done by a couple artists per genre to keep the same scale, look, and feel to the set. Again, also, it would be preferred to have original free art to avoid any legal issues. Yeah there are a ton of minis out there but they mostly suck.
Anyone willing to contribute to make Hero online better and easier?

I've done some enhancements to the character sheet from the OpenRPG website (which I think is pretty good and would for the most part work for any game), but I haven't gone back and put them into the stock sheet (they are just in my filled in one). I'll work on getting that done. The changes I can recall are:
Made the skill sheet a lot bigger and got rid of some redundant fields for total cost.
Broke Talents and Perks into a separate tab.
Added a tab for equipment.
Added some more rows to the Characteristics tab and made Running, Leaping, and Swimming additional Characteristics (I can't seem to get the resizing/scrolling to work perfectly on this one for some reason).

I've also been doing some mapping. The trick is getting inspired about something to actually map. Once I have an idea of what I want, I can pump something out pretty easily. I can probably post some basic dungeons and buildings and such.

Does your powers tab work, I downloaded the one from the web and all of the tabs work great excpet the powers tab. On mine it opens (using either use or design) but will not allow me to edit/add any powers. This is only in the character sheet portion, the dice roller tabs all work great. I have also added an equipment node to the dice roller portion of the Tabber, I just cloned the combat tab and changed it for equipment. If your powers section works, can I get a copy?

I agree with all of this. I am willing to contribute to such a project as time allows, but my skills, especially as regards artwork are limited, but growing. As to a character sheet, I have only found one online and I have modified it slightly by adding an equipment node to the dice roller tabs. The powers tab is uneditable so I need to work on that or get some help, but other than that it is a great sheet for any genre. I also agree that an export template for HD would really rock!

Heroman, it's great that you want to spearhead this effort. I've long maintained that HERO fans are some of the coolest in the hobby. :thumbup:
I just want to be sure that you've explored all the available resources under the "Free Stuff" section of this website, http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/freestuffherogames.htm . There is a great number and variety of cool things there, and sometimes the titles of the various links to webpages don't reflect everything that's been added to them since they were first listed. Specific to your request, there are various hex and grid maps (not with the kind of details you request, but at least in different formats with several backgrounds), a host of Hero Designer templates, a variety of character sheets in different formats, and a number of full-color tent minis by frequent Hero Games freelance artist Storn Cook which definitely do not suck. ;)
If you've already seen all that and it doesn't suit your purpose, my apologies and please disregard.

The character sheet formats we are looking for are xml based nodes for OpenRPG, while the sheets in the freestuff section are very nicely done they are not in a format that will read or display as a node in the program. Your idea about the grids and maps is a good one though. As for Hero Designer, I thnk we are going to need to create a custom export template that will write to an xml file that is formatted for nodal use in OpenRPG.
Oh yeah, I agree about Storns artwork. Using token tool it is fairly easy to create nice "minis" from any suitable artwork.

In that case it would probably be feasible to harvest from Storn's Art and Characters Thread (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=463). Since he put them up there I doubt he would mind his art being used as a free web resource (at least the stuff that's not for a published client), although of course it would be appropriate to ask first.

Hmm. Yeah. Mine works just fine. That is one of the tabs I didn't modify, I believe. Anyway, attached is the complete modified character sheet I used for my character. I have erased the data so it is ready to be filled out, though I left in the Everyman Skills for our particular campaign (so they might need to be modified for others).
As usual, once downloading you should change the extension from '.txt' to '.xml' before trying to import it into your OpenRPG Game Tree.

Okay. So we had a game tonight, and we all noticed the held-action problem (it may not just be due to held actions, and/or it may only be after the first post-12; I don't know). I'm too tired now to try to come up with exact reproduction steps, but hopefully I can get to doing that soon. Here's my best recollection at the moment:
Four characters: Speed 4/Dex 18, Speed 3/Dex 18, Speed 3/Dex 17, Speed 3/Dex 13 (not sure in what order they were added though).
Start the combat (/hstart).
First two characters perform a full phase (then /hgo).
Third character performs a half phase, then holds the second half phase (then /hgo).
Fourth character performs a full phase (then /hgo).
The system skips the phase of the Speed 4 character in Segment 3 and goes to a Phase in Segment 4. Also, the third character's Held Half Phase is lost (now that I think about it I guess that last might be correct based on its going to Segment 4, though. I think it is my house rule that a held phase gets kept right up until the character's next Phase instead of being lost at the beggining of that Segment).
Right. So I'm rambling. Good night.

K then the only thing that glitched was when we went from segment 12 to segment 4 skipping segment 3 (which is where I should have showed up. I was the SPD 4 DEX 18 Guy, and my previous move was entered as a full move). It looks like the half move worked ok, or so it appears.
Once we get this debugged....THIS APP WILL BE TOTALLY AWESOME!

Back on topic, after we have enough people saying "yeah, this openrpg character sheet is the coolest and needs to additional work!" I will look at transforming it into a HD export format.
Starwolf
Jul 14th, '06, 08:42 AM
For the character sheet or sheets, I would recommend we develop one mega sheet that covers all genres, that way we only need one export template for HD. In addition it is much easier for the novice user to either ignore or delete a node they don't want or need than it is to use mutliple sheets or create custom sheets.
I do like the protocol of the one I downloaded from the net that was basically empty except for a sample entry in each of the Dice Roller nodes to show the syntax for adding your own attributes/skill/combat rolls.

On the map-making front, a fellow with the online identity of Hador (I think... maybe Hadron) has created a beautiful tutorial for making maps using such tools as GIMP, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, etc.
I have seen several examples of maps created using these tools, and they are MARVELOUS. After I have familiarized myself with the techniques, I'll be happy to create some fantasy and sci-fi maps for free use by the community.
The big thing that is needed is a collection of, for lack of a more original term, "placeables"... small items that you can drop into a map to fill out the terrain. Like trees, bushes, rocks, bridges, etc. for exterior maps and furniture and such for interior maps.

There are a few of them that actually come with OpenRPG IIRC. They are hardly extensive, but it's a good start. That's another good thing to contribute along with basic maps, though.

Well, though it would probably take some work to arrange things nicely (by someone maintaining initial posts with updated links or something), it could possibly be done on one or more threads here, combined with an image hosting service like http://imageshack.us/ (with the understanding that such free hosting may be lossy).

We are getting very close to having an HD to ORPG export template, the basic export has been tested and is working (successfully exported from HD and read into ORPG). Now our Hero, Ghost Angel, is adding functionality, bells and whistles. With Heromans upgraded dice roller, and Prestidigitators and Heromans movement/phase tracker, and this export template, ORPG has become my favorite gaming utility. So with HD, ORPG, and some 3D art programs I am one happy pirate.... YAR! :D

Hey guys - (bump) Is this thing still moving forward?
-CraterMaker
There has been some progress in summary...
1) We now have a working (and very nice) Charater export template for ORPG. We need to get one setup for Vehicles, Computers, and Bases.
2) We have extensively tested the turn/phase tracker and it works nicely.
3) We have extensively tested the new enhanced Hero Dice script and it works beautifully.
Things I would like to do right after Christmas...
1) Bundle all of the node templates, the export template, the new dice script, and a Hero specific "How to guide" into a ZIP for distribution.
2) See if we can work out some kind of defense/damage tracker (right now you can enter/track things manually on a note tab in the character sheet node). I would like to create something along the line of having each player enter a script command to set his current Defenses, CON, BODY, END, & Stun. Then have either a GM entry mode, or a GM & Player entry mode where you can specify a value the decrements or recovers these stats, possibly with a pop-up that says stunned, unconcscious, dying etc. But before I can get into this I need to learn python... unless there are any Heroes interested in attempting this that are already python savvy. Currently we are using python version 2.3, I believe that we have had major issues getting ORPG itself to run under newer versions of python.
Anyways thats where we stand at the moment. :D

Good to hear! I have had some grueling time at work, so not as followup-ish on this as I had hoped. As far as the tracker goes, getting something fluid could take time and may be better served with a tracker tab (your max value and a single line to track current). One thing which could be cool is if we had a minion tracker node for GMs to use.
I do have time to poke at OpenRPG code, if there are any needs.

Hiya Heroman :D
you are correct a minion taracker would be most cool. Your mods to the hero dice roller have worked out nicely. There were a couple of kinks in the turn/phase tracker but between yourself, Ghost Angel, and Nolgroth they have been worked out.
A couple of notes about the use of these mods/plugins... for others that may read this.
1) The HD to ORPG export template will faithfully export your character but ORPG will choke if there are any ampersands in the text. So don't use the & symbol in any power, skill, or notes that you have.
2) Once imported you need to open the dice node in the imported character in design mode (right click and select design) and tweak/fix some of the dice roll strings.
3) To dress up the strings I add some html tags for bolding, etc.
4) To make combat quick and painless we have adopted some standard Macros that are set under the settings tab. We use F1 through F4 macros for Initailize character in combat tracker (F1), Half Move (F2), Full Move (F3), and Hold Action (F4). We use the F5 through F8 macros for generic dice rolls with Generic Skill roll (F5), a Generic to hit roll (F6), a generic Normal Damage and hit location roll (F7) and a generic killing damage and hit location roll (F8). The specific script syntax is in the docs for each of the mods/plugins.

Here is a tutorial specific to rolling hero dice in ORPG. Note that for this to work you must have Heromans updated Hero dice roller installed.
Open RPG Hero dice roller tutorial
Note all actual syntax is typed in bold in this tutorial to make it easy to pick out.
Skill Roller, example [3d6.sk(11,0)]
Make a Skill roll. The first number of the two modifiers is the rating in the skill, 11 meaning 11 or less. The second number is any penalty or bonus you have for the roll. A positive number is a bonus, a negative number is a penalty. As with many Hero system rolls, the only die choice that makes sense is 3d6
To-hit roller, example [3d6.cv(5,1)]
Make a to-hit roll. The first modifier is your Combat Value. The second number is any penalty or bonus you have for the roll. A bonus is positive, and a penalty is negative. Again, the only roll that is sensible is 3d6. The result of the roll is the the highest Defensive Combat Value that can be hit with that roll.
Killing damage roller, example [(1d6+1d6/2).k(0)]
[3d6.k(0)] returns 3d6 killing, including stun. It rolls the 1d6-1 stun, modified by 0. [3d6.k(1)] would be the same, but factors in a +1 stun multiplier.
Normal damage roller, example [(5d6+1d6/2).n()]
Make a damage roll for Normal damage. Results show body and stun totals. No modifiers exist. Only sensible for d6 values.
Hit Location roller, example [3d6.hl()]
Roll on the hit location chart. Results show the location hit (including left or right side) and multipliers to damage when hitting that location. No modifiers exist. Contributed by Heroman
Hit locations rolls other than the standard 3d6 are supported for placed shots. So for example you could use the notation [(2d6+1).hl()] to get a location from 3 to 13, or you could use the notation [(1d1+5).hl()] to get an exact location of 6.
Basic Killing damage roller, example [2d6.hk()]
Rolls killing without a stun multiplier for ease of use with the Hit Location roller mentioned above. No modifiers exist. Contributed by Heroman
Note that to add included dice modifiers like 3d6+1 or 5d6+1/2d6 you must surround base dice and the adder with parenthesis. Heroman added a dice adder for half dice on normal damage rolls only. The syntax is [5d6.nh()]
To roll descending dice the syntax is [3d6.descending().n()] or [3d6.descending().hk()]
Any number in any of the syntax examples above can be replaced with a ? wildcard. The roller will then prompt you for a number to fill in the missing value. This is useful if you want to set up permanent scripts. Nolgroth suggests setting the macros for function keys F5 through F8 as follows. In ORPG on the menu bar click the OpenRPG dropdown and select settings. In settings select the Macro tab. In the macro tab enter the following text in bold then click ok when done.
F5 = [3d6.sk(?,?)]
F6 = [3d6.cv(?,?)]
F7 = [?d6.n()] [3d6.hl()]
F8 = [?d6.hk()] [3d6.hl()]
Dice roller help, [3d6.help()] to give a list of hero die commands (note: it is like a regular die roller, so will go across in chat unless you whisper it to yourself).
In addition to the scripts setup in the macros you can enter dice scripts in the die roller node created by the Hero Designer to ORPG export template or included in the stand alone nodes we have created for manual character entry. To edit the dice roller expand the character node by clicking the little plus sign next to the character name. Inside you will find a tabber node named Dice. Right click the Dice tabber and select Design from the popup menu. Once in design mode you can either edit the dice scripts that are already there or add new ones. You can also use HTML tags in your dice scripts to dress them up and make them easier to read, for example…
<b>Stealth</b> [3d6.sk(12,0)]
Produces
Stealth [3d6.sk(12,0)] -> [6,2,5] – 0 = (13) vs 12 or less failure by -1
You can also enter several dice rolls on the same line so for example in the Dice tabber if you add a scropt that reads…
<b><i>Punch:</i></b> [3d6.cv(6,?)], <b>Damage:</b>[4d6.n()] <b>Hit Location:</b>[3d6.hl()]
Which produces…
Punch: [3d6.cv(6,0)] -> [1,3,4] = (8) with a CV of 6 and a modifier of 0 hits up to DCV 9, Damage: [4d6.n()] -> [5,6,1,3] = (4) Body and (15) Stun, Hit Location: [3d6.hl()] -> [4,5,2] = (11) Location: Chest, Stunx: x3, NStun: x1, Bodyx: x1
I hope this helps

From Heroman (the author of this plugin)
The file xxheroinit.py goes in the plugins subdirectory. It is only needed by the GM
The file hiplayer.xml goes in the myfiles. It is an OpenRPG node which can be shared to players containing some common commands. Right click on the Game Tree and choose Insert File to load it.
To start:
The GM needs to active the plugin. This is done by starting OpenRPG, opening the Tools/Plugins menu and selecting the "Hero Turn Tool".
This utility will automate the action tracking for players and NPCs.
GM Commands:
Below are the GM commands:
/hadd DEX SPEED CHARACTER
Adds the character named CHARACTER with a dex DEX and speed SPEED.
/hlist
Shows the current combat turn
/hstart
Starts the combat sequence. Moves you to Segment 12, highest dex.
/hgo
Advances the combat. Moves to the next lower dex (providing everyone has gone). It will also advance to the next segment if everyone has gone.
If there are held actions it will stop at dex 0 and let you know there are held actions every segment (to allow you to use the held action). Another /hgo will advance to the next segment.
/hact # (full | half | abort | stunned | hold)
Has character number # perform an action. # is the # from the /hlist. You specify one of the actions from the list, like:
/hact 1 full
The GM can make any character act.
Full uses a full action (must have a full or held full available)
Half uses a half action (if you have a full, you will be left with a half)
Abort aborts (uses your action, if you still have one. If you did not act this segment, will abort your next action).
Stunned will set you as stuned, losing your current action (if any) and the next phase
Hold will hold your full action or remaining half.
/hclear
Blows away the list of characters
/hchange # DEX SPEED
Change character number # to dex DEX and speed SPEED
Player Commands
Players can add themselves and act in the normal chat. They should whisper to the GM (by preceeding the command with /gm) to avoid spamming the general chat session. NOTE: These do not start with a "/". Replies from the GM will be whispered to the player.
heroinit (hlist)
Shows initiative list
heroinit (hadd DEX SPEED CHARACTER)
Adds CHARACTER at DEX and SPEED
Example: heroinit (hadd 20 4 Speedy)
heroinit (hact # (full|half|hold|stunned|abort))
Like /hact. NOTE: You can omit the '#' and it will choose the first character the PC owns.
The XML node has all of the hlist and hact commands.
From me
In our game each player sets up the commands for players to add their own character to the tracker and to announce/resolve their actions in the tracker in the ORPG macros using function keys F1 through F4 (as we use F5 through F8 for generic dice rolls... see post above about this).
We enter /gm heroinit(hadd 18 3 Wade) in the F1 Macro (where 18 is the characters DEX, 3 is the Characters SPD, and Wade is the characters name), /gm heroinit(hact half) in the F2 macro, /gm heroinit(hact full) in the F3 macro,
and /gm heroinit(hact hold) in the F4 macro,
And here is the file...

Cool! Reps all around....soon as I figure out how to rep people
What version of Openrpg do you all use.. I use 1.7 as I found that the hero dice in 1.6 was a bit...buggy.

LOL... You rep people by clicking on the little scale of justice in the upper right hand corner on next to their name.
We are using version 1.6.3 as we experienced server problems when trying to upgrade to 1.7 last week.
We also experienced the same Hero Dice issues so Heroman (the guy that wrote our phase/turn tracker) tweaked the Hero dice roller for us. He is also the original author of the dice roller included with earlier versions of ORPG. His enhanced/updated die roller works just great in version 1.7 as well. Extract this zip to the OpenRPG\orpg\dieroller directory. It will overwrite the original buggy file. Note this upgraded version is the one I used for the dice roller tutorial I posted above.
And here is that file...

In light of recent interest I decided to create a bundle of our OpenRPG stuff for hero, that way you can grab just one file and get it all. I included instructions for how to use the files in a readme, and How to use the turn/phase tracker and Hero dice roller in a game.
Enjoy...
EDIT: Ghost-Angel tweaked the export template so I have downloaded new template and updated the zip attached here.

Aside from the obvious (the export template in the HD directory), where should these files GO in Windows (assuming you used the default directories to install OpenRPG?)

The character tree node can go anywhere, but is usually placed in c:\openrpg\myfiles. Once it is placed, you have to import it into the master tree file.
Within OpenRPG, right click on the Game Tree and select Insert File.
Browse to the character tree node, which is an XML file.
The die roller goes in c:\openrpg\orpg\dieroller. Once it is placed there, you need to enable it by typing dieroller hero in the chat window.
The Hero Turn Tracker goes in c:\openrpg\plugins. Once there, you have to enable it in the plug-ins menu.
Within OpenRPG, click on the Tools menu and select Plugins.
Place a check mark in the Hero Turn Tool box.
(optional) You can set the Hero Turn Tool to automatically start by clicking on the Main menu and selecting Plugins Loaded on Startup. Any of the plugins checked in this dialog box will start up with OpenRPG.All of these instructions assume an OpenRPG install location of C:\OpenRPG. If you have OpenRPG installed into another folder, use that instead. The Courier font is used to denote commands, either typed or clicked.
Hope this helps and if you have further questions, we'll be happy to help.

Yeah what Nolgroth said. The herodice roller (hero.py) goes into c:\program files\OpenRPG\orpg\dieroller and overwrites the existing file. The xml files go into c:\program files\OpenRPG\MyFiles\ and all of the zip files that sart with xx go into c:\program files\OpenRPG\plugins. Once placed properly you have to activate hero dice by changing the settings under OpenRPG -> Settings from within the ORPG program. Then You need to activate the plugins by going to Tools -> plugins, and I recommend setting them to load on startup. Finally to load the xml files right click the top of your game tree and select insert file. Once you load a generic character sheet node you need to edit it by right clicking and select design to enter your personal character information, and also edit the dice roller scripts.
