Okay, looks like in the next few years I might be moving out of state. My choices are Washington, which I'm familiar with and have people I know living there already, or South Dakota, where my ex-wife's mother lives. And yes, SD is a choice due to custody reasons; the ex wants to move to SD but can't unless I move there as well. Personally, I don't care, as long as I'm out of AZ.

Anyway, I'm wondering what the RPG communitity is like is either of these states. I'm looking at the Seattle area in WA and the Custer area in SD, or within 40-50 miles of either. Anyone from either of these areas? And specifically, what's the Hero System gaming community like?

You can always take a look at the Herophiles United (http://www.frappr.com/herophilesunited)map...

Both choices are too far away from Oklahoma, the center of the universe. :D

I mean look how cool the bunny is and he's just close to Oklahoma. Yet that much coolness rubbed off on him.

WA. If you are in the Puget sound area, I can put you in touch with a couple people.

Outsider for one.

Dean Schomshak lives there, though his normal gaming group afaik is full up.

Don't know anyone in SD, gamer or not, so can't help you there. Do know several people in the Seattle area, and pretty-much all of them are either 1) gamers, 2) former gamers (most of whom could probably be pursuaded to game again if pressed), or 3) other comic/SF geeks of various stripes.

Didn't the Curtises (should that be Curtisi?) move up to Washington? And I seem to remember seeing a thread awhile back about Seattle-area Herophiles looking for players? <shuffle, shuffle> Here tis (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9776&page=7&). Looks like it's been quiet since last fall, tho.

There's a number of Hero Gamers in & around Seattle; the group I'm in (which includes myself, The Monster (my brother), Jaxom, and Dracheneisen) is in the city proper. It's just that the group is so large we have problems already, and I can't in good conscience invite more folks.

Outside the Seattle vicinity itself ... Besides the Curtises who just moved to Port Angeles, I've seen posts to the Player Finder forum from other places in the state. Also don't overlook the Vancouver (WA) area, which is just across the Columbia from Portland OR.

and in the Tricities area (south east washington) we got a strong group of 8 or so players which is gonna probably be split into two different groups

It's starting to sound like if I want to continue playing Hero System, I gotta move to WA, or teach a bunch of South Dakaotans how to play (not to mention finding them...)

What's the convention circuit like in WA (I guess I need not bother asking for SD...)? Any good gaming conventions? Anyone able to compare them to the ones here in AZ?

I have no personal knowledge on the subject, but I'd be stunned if the Seattle area doesn't have more gamers, roleplayers, and Herophiles than their respective numbers in the Custer area (and my guess would be that the entire state of SD has fewer of each category than Seattle and environs).

That having been said, if SD is still in the running, you might want to look back over the last 12 months or so on the Player Finder board, and perhaps post there as well.

I went to Dragonflight a couple times, it was pretty good.

Portland OR has a con or two also, and not THAT far from Puget Sound.

I know there's some gaming in eastern South Dakota -- I'm house- and cat-sitting for friends over Labor Day while they're at MAGE-Con.

Have you researched the school systems and activities for children in these states? Also, have you looked at your income versus the cost of living. Those, more than gamers, will be key to your quality of life. Seattle is an expensive place to live, has horrible traffic, and a difficult job market. Will you live more stabaly and comfortably is SD. On the other hand, if you are on the eastside the schools are pretty good and there's lots for kids to do. If you've got scads of cash go for it. That asked, I spent most of my life in Washington and you can find Hero gamers and products in the Seattle area without serious difficulty. And, as mentioned, there are the cons. I have a strong (and completely unfounded) suspicion the gaming opportunities will be better than Seattle - and no ex-mother-in-law.
