Can I load this program into my palm? I'm getting a new Treo 700P, and I'm hoping I can load this thing (being Java and all) onto it so I can fiddle with characters anywhere. :D I have v2.42 btw.
If so, I'm gonna be ecstatic... if not, bummer. :( Its the Treo with the Palm OS... not the windows mobile thing... so any help would be appreciated. Should show up by this monday!

Short answer: Nope. It won't work because you don't have support for the full version of Java. There are several other threads on this topic that have more information that Dan has provided.

If i were you Id tell Plam you want a real J2SE VM. They hear that enough maybe youll get one. Id imagine the modern Pals must have enough umph to handle it...

I'll have to check and see... so basically I need the full java, so if it can handle that, it should work? Excellent, I was a bit worried it might be windows specific.

It won't work.
A full Java installation does not exist for palm devices (yet).
What you will get on the treo is J2ME (micro edition). This is a stripped down version of Java intended for embedded devices (like the palm).
What you need to run HD is J2SE (standard edition).
What's more, you need J2SE 5 -- Java 5. What you quoted above was J2ME 1.4.2 (which is an older version of the core classes that are part of the micro edition of Java).

*sigh* Well, that hurts... but, I just found something interesting that makes me wonder...

Seems that there may be a method afterall? Its all very confusing to me, I'm hardly up to date on my technical knowledge on all this stuff. And as for version 2.42 I was referring to Hero Designer, not Java. =) I don't know anything for java versions or the like... just that I have Hero Designer v2.42, and that I would dearly love for it to be usable on my palm.

You are not listening.
Let's make it simple and straightforward: You will not be able to run ANY version of HD on your Treo. At all.
A full version of J2SE version 5 does not exist for the Treo. This is required for HDv3.
A full version of J2SE (any revision/version) does not exist for the Treo. This is required for HDv2/HDv1.

That article is about J2ME not J2SE.
Whenever you see a reference to a JAD file, its J2ME.
J2ME is the "cell phone Java", which as Dan says is tripped down and very differnt from the full J2SE. Programs writen fro one are not compataible with the other.
What you need a is Java 5 J2SE VM. AFAIk there are none available for the treo.

Well Sony is now releasing their ultra portable:

Yes, it runs Windows XP Professional SP2
And I've mentioned this one before, the price has even come down on it:

Well... the thing with the treo is that its a phone, too, which is what I needed. And paying $1500+ is a bit much now. If I had that much laying around, I'd rebuild my Chevy 350 and get it stroked out. =) Very cool, though.

Ah the good ole days. When HDv1 came out, someone asked about putting it on a pocket PC, and Dan jokingly said "All you need is XXX amount of Ram and a full J2SE Java and you can run it. Obvioulsy the person he was joking with knew this was impossible, but my dumb @$$ had no clue. So I go out and buy a 1gig memory card (which at the time was pretty expensive) and start scrubbing the net for J2SE Java for a pocket PC. Not finding one, I came back to the boards to ask...Yeah that was embarassing.
