I haven't seen anything about this so far, maybe I did something wrong. I'm having real trouble with the export templates. I can get them to work for a couple of my characters that were already created when I downloaded the templates the first time, but they won't work on any characters I have created since. I've tried downloading the templates again, but I'm still having the same problem. Also, if I try to export one of the new characters, I can't get any of the ones I could originally export to go in that session. Anybody?

It would help if you could give me a bit more info that "it doesn't work"

What's going wrong? Do you have any error messages? Is there anything in the file "trace.log"?

More info:
It's a little different each time. Most times, when I hit "select export template", the list comes up. Then, when I try to "preview character" or "export to file", the blank list window comes up. Sometimes, I get the blank window when I try to select the export template.

After looking around, I'm having the same problems as super squirrel. However, I'm running ver. 1.18 and I never changed the templates from the ExportTemplates folder.

There is a trace.log file, but when I try to open it it flashes on the screen too quickly for me to read.

What in the world are you using to open it? It's just a text file.

If you're actively running HD, then shut it down before you open the log file, since it sounds like whatever you're using to view it is "auto refreshing" the file whenever HD appends to it.

Well, there are no errors in there, which tends to point to an issue with your filesystem.

There's nothing terribly "special" about what HD is doing when it pulls up the list of available Export Templates. All it does is look into the ExportTemplates directory and lists the TEMPLATE_NAME attribute from any .hdt files that it finds.

If you're seeing an empty list, it means that HD cannot read from that directory (for whatever reason). This is not something which the code can affect.

About the only suggestions that I can really make are the following:

1. Check the properties on the ExportTemplates directory and the files in it to make sure that they are not set to something funky like "archive" or whatever.

2. Make sure that you are running HD through the installed launcher and that you have not edited the file HeroDesigner.lax

3. Failing the above, uninstall HD, run a full scan on your drive, defrag, and then reinstall.

Basically, there's something horked on your system....the third option is the "heavy weight" way to fix it, but may be the only way.

This is exactly the same problem I have been having (I mentioned the wrong folder name last time). I'm going to try updating it today but it is a pretty strange problem. I didn't change anything and it was working fine for a while.

I have now updated to version 1.19b and I still can not export files to HTML.

It is not a problem with the code, so updating will not help you.

You need to follow the suggestions that I posted above. There's something very wrong with your file system, from the sound of things.

I'm going to reinstall, looking at the files, the .lax file was modified the last time I ran HeroDesigner. I'm not sure how that happened or why but I'll take a close look at my computer and see if I can figure out any other problems there. Thanks for the help though.

HD will modify that file on its own to adjust the memory settings from the initial install.

Ok, I did everything (including the defrag) and still no go. I understand that the error isn't in the code. Any more suggestions? I'm stumped.

Well I've been playing around and here's what else I've found. It doesn't matter how many characters I open in a given session, when I close that session and start another the same character is the only one open. If I set the export template on that character, I can preview it and I can set the export on any other character I open, but I can't preview any of them. Then if I go back to the original character, I can set the export again, but I can't preview it. If I don't initially set the export on that primary character, I can't set the export on any other character in that session. Hope this gives you some clues.

It's not telling me much....and what it is telling me is contradictory: HD can access your hard drive, since it _is_ remembering _some_ of its state from the last session. But it's not remembering all of it (only one character is re-opening). There is NOTHING in the code that could do that.

The same goes for the export bit.

This seriously sounds like your system is horked in a major way. Are you experiencing issues with any other applications?

Either way, the only thing I can think of is for you to post a series of exact steps that you're taking so that I can try to replicate them on my end. I mean everything. Uninstall HD, delete the install directory, and re-install it to start from a "blank slate" and then post the steps. Like the following:

1. I double click the icon on my desktop and launch HD

2. HD opens and I select File -> Open Character and select the file C:\Documents and Settings\Dan Simon\Desktop\someCharacter.hdc

3. someCharacter.hdc opens and I select File -> Open Character and select the file C:\Documents and Settings\Dans Simon\Desktop\someOtherCharacter.hdc

4. someOtherCharacter.hdc opens and I select File -> Preview Character.

5. The Export Template selection dialog comes up and I select....

And so on.

Be precise.

And then post (or email me) the trace.log file once you close the session.

One other thing here:

When you post the above information, please also include the contents of the file "appPrefs.xml" (in your install directory). That is where things like the open characters and prefabs are stored between sessions. I'd like to know if HD is writing out each of the open characters to the file and then just not opening each of them or if it's only writing one character out to file.

Ok, I think I may be onto something. I uninstalled HD and deleted the install folder, then reinstalled it. When I started a new session, I opened another character and tried to directly preview it. I had previously set to to the 3 column compressed template. I got an error message stating that the system could not find the specified file. I went into the program folder and looked into the export template folder, to make sure the templates had re-installed. I tried to open one of them directly. As expected, it wouldn't open without another program to read it. However, it said that it needed the creator.exe file. I had previously had Hero Creator, but have since deleted it. Since I didn't delete it until recently, could this have something to do with my problem?

It shouldn't. Hero Creator really has nothing to do with HD.

The templates can be opened in any text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, vi, etc)

Ok. But, I just went and did the same thing again (opened "My Computer", opened "Program Files", opened "Hero Designer", opened "Export Templates", and tried to open "Hero 3 Column"). The message says "Windows cannot find "creator.exe". This program is needed for opening files of type 'HDE File'." Could the fact that I started using HD before I removed Creator have established a faulty pathway in the logic?

Code-wise, nothing is going wrong. It's looking at the export template directory and (apparently) not finding any valid templates.

The reasons that I can see for this to happen are:

1. There is no "ExportTemplates" directory in HD's active directory (it's install folder)

2. There are no .hdt files in the ExportTemplates directory

3. A system level error is preventing HD from reading the directory

4. The system is not setting the "current directory" to HD's install directory (like it should be).

1&2 you seem to be indicating are not the case.

3 would give us an error in the trace.log file....which we're not seeing.

4 is easy enough to test --- rather than running from the shortcut (on your desktop or whereever), open up windows explorer and go to the install directory. Double click on HeroDesigner.exe to launch the app.

If that doesn't help, then there's nothing else I can think of for you. There's just something very wrong on your system.

Just wanted to say thanks for your time and effort. So far, nothing has worked. I'll keep trying to figure out what's wrong. Hopefully, I'll eventually be able to use HD to its fullest.
