I used to play Champions years ago. I've been
trying to get back involved but have been unable
to get a copy of the 5th Edition core book. I have
heard that a new printing is due out. Does anyone
know when?

The last that I had heard new copies were shipping to the Distributor last Friday. Assuming everything went correctly the books should be in your FLGS one to two weeks after that.

Ok, now to let my ignorance show:
FLGS?

FLGS = Friendly Local Gaming Store.
And I'll intercept another question: FREd = HERO System 5th Edition Rulebook.
Ever hear someone call the big, blue Champions edition the "BBB", for Big Blue Book? Before 5th came out, people were wondering what to call it. Steve Long said something to the effect of, "You can call it "Fred" for all I care, as long as you buy it :D" The name stuck, and was retconned into standing for Fifth Rules Edition.
Finally, a shameless plug  If you're curious about how the system has changed from 4th to 5th Edition, I've compiled a slightly-less-than-exhaustive listing HERE (http://theemerged.blogspot.com/HERO425.htm). No, that isn't a cheap solicitation, in fact I have to pay to keep the advertisements off...
Smiley face added to quote for clarification's sake.

To keep myself from looking like a total mercenary bastard, I feel compelled to point out that the original quote came with a smiley face at the end. ;) Clearly my humor must have broad appeal! ;)

This is how it starts, buddy. First you make a humorous comment, and add a smiley face. Then it gets passed around with the same chuckles minus the smiley face. Then, years from now, when DoJ is an industry giant alongside White Wolf Studios, WotC, and WhizKids, some pimple-faced punk is going to flood the internet with "Steve's a total mercenary bastard."
Though, to keep history on track, dubbing 5th edition "FRED" ended up gaming legend. I may not know anyone who bought Hero 5th because of the nickname, but I can attest that many a Hero related conversation started when someone overheard me using "Fred" in relation to an inanimate object. Answering the question "what is Fred?" has introduced a few people to Hero out here in Northern California.

But how do you explain to someone this: "I picked up Fred and felt gay. I'm one happy chappie". And then tell them you're talking about a book and are not queer? Steve doesn't know the power he weilds when we use the phrase "I picked up Fred." My 2c

I'm glad I decided to pick up Champions, again. I'm even more glad that I out the Hero website and ran into these BB's. I think I'm going to feel right at home.:D

Thinking quickly on my feet and avoiding such conversational minefields is how I've become the man I am today.

Steve, you're not a total mercenary bastard. You're a shrewd business man... which by default requires you to maintain the image of a total mercenary bastard, if even a friendly and caring one. ;)
