I can not find any rules regarding combat facing in the 5E rules. Does anybody know of such a rule or have some insight on how this might effect game play?

As per many other games. There is no inherent combat facing. A character is considered to be moving and looking around enough that facing isn't important unless surrounded by more than two or three enemys.

There's a character facing image on page 248 of FREd. But I wouldn't recommend using it, unless you want a "into the last detail"-realistic campaign.

If encountering several enemies at once, refer to what Tim said.

The "character facing" image on page 248 is apparently mislabeled; it's use is for misfiring with Area Of Effect and Explosion attacks.

The rules for facing aren't specifically spelled out in one place. Look for the rules on Turn Mode, Attacks From Behind, and other factors that facing can affect.
