I was rereading my reply to Enforcer in the Showdown V thread, and it got me thinking: How do you clasify Archtypes?

I tend to group Most Weapon Masters, Martial Artists, some Gadgeteers, and some others as "Skilled Normals"

I tend to look at Powered Armor people by what there armor does (So If it gives a character a 60 Str and protection he is a Brick, if it gives him Energy Blast he is a Blaster)

Bricks stay the same

Energy Projectors are renamed Balsters, but otherwise stay the same, some mentalists get thrown in here (like Telekinetics and Pyrokinetics)

Some Gadgeeters, most mystics, some speedsters are "Wizards". Does not need to be mystical, someone like Green Lantern would be a Wizard

Speedsters are anyone who's powers revolve around movement, this includes some Martial Artists, a few Mystics, some Gadgeeteers (Those who specialise in vehicles)

Mentalists are those who have mental powers that effect the mind

Anything that seems like a comics staple is an archetype to me. Shapeshifter breaks down into Grower, Shrinker and Stretcher (and possibly Animal Forms too) because there have been several of all three subdivisions in the comics. The do-anything shapeshifter, like Metamorpho, is less common than the sub-groups.

I'm pretty 'go with the flow', Champions has 11 'official' archetypes, so when I'm playing Champions, I tend to use those classifications.

Then I break it down further if need be. :)

I don't have a well-thought-out answer to your question, but I do like some of the ideas in this "Power Point" article on the subject: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1905/haym14.html

No, no, no! Gothic arches are where its at . . . much stronger, and besides, they're all pointy. Evryone knows that pointy is cool

Brick
Energy projector
Martial Artist
Skills Guy
Egoist
Other

That's about all we use to describe our "archetypes." And we never say "other." At that point it's just "I'm a shapeshifter" or "I'm a stretchy guy with acid spit!" or "I have beer powers!" It's not really something that comes up.

There is a more complete version of this article IIRC....or a different treatment of the subject.
