View Full Version : HEROcon 2007 (Baltimore)

Diamond Spear
Nov 8th, '06, 06:53 AM
As we continue to plan HEROcon 2007 we would like to get an estimate of attendance. The event will be held in the Baltimore Maryland area, Veterans Day Weekend, November 9-11, 2007. If you are likely to attend please reply to this post as we need at least a rough estimate to make sure the site we are looking at is large enough to hold the gathering and so that we can use the estimate for our proposal to the site owner. When replying please post if you think you are likely to be able to attend. If you think you will be bringing anyone with you who is not likely to post on these boards please note that in your post as well. If you have any questions feel free to post them as well.

More details about HEROcon 2007

Planning continues on HEROcon 2007 and we are now at the point of selecting an appropriate site for the event. The site we are most interested in is a game store located in Glen Burnie Maryland called Games, Comics, Stuff. (Their website can be found at: http://gamesandstuffonline.com/) This site is the leading candidate because they have an upstairs floor that is entirely given over to gaming space which also has a separate, smaller room, in addition to the main room that can serve as either a “premium” gaming space or as a “vendor’s space”. The store itself carries a wide variety of games and gaming supplies as well as snacks, sodas, etc.

Parking is plentiful with a parking garage half a block from the store that does not charge for parking. There are a number of restaurants nearby and there is a large comic book store half a block from the game store for those who are looking for more than just games.

I should be able to attend, but it will probably just be me. It is possible my SO will attend, but no certainty of that.

Will we need to front some money in the near future to pay for a ticket?

If I do in fact get a 4 day weekend and I might be able to make it.

I'll be at Fort Huachuca then for OBC so it might not be feasible for me to fly from BF, Arizona all they way out to Maryland.

I hope I can, I really enjoyed getting to meet you guys at GenCon and would like the chance to do it again.

Otherwise, my Reserve unit is out of Fort Meade so barring a deployment to the sandbox for 2008 I'll definitely be able to make it then (if there is a HeroCon 2008)

There is a slight snag....

The following is from the owner of Games, Comics, and Stuff.

I am open to hosting the event, but be aware - a new Magic set releases
that weekend, and we traditionally host a release tournament on that
weekend. This release tournament provides good revenue for us, in
addition to being an expected tradition.

That said, hosting the con is possible if you're willing to share the
space with other gamers. To reserve the space solely for yourself for
all three days, the charge would have to be significant enough so that
it covers the revenue that would have been generated by the tournaments
we would have had on that weekend.

If you're willing to share, we'll reserve space, free of charge, solely
for your use. I'm not sure this is the best option, however, as noise
pollution may be an issue.

Another option is changing the date. Pretty much any other weekend
should be fine, though I'd still have to do some research to be sure.

If we go forward with this, there are still some other points I need to
address. In order to go forward, though, we need to find solutions to
the concerns above :) Thanks for keeping us in mind.

I like the "free of charge" part, but I also like the "solely for your use" part, and in my mind, "solely for our use" trumps free charge. So I'm wondering about trying another weekend (Veteran's Day?) or just take some normal weekend and "presume" people are going to take a day off to make the weekend work.

Any opinions.

I am interested. Veterans Day works for me. As does the original date (though I have no way to predict what will be hapening a year from now.)

Diamond Spear
Nov 13th, '06, 12:02 PM
With ten or eleven months until the convention I see no reason why I (and presumably others) would not be able to take a Friday off to make the full three days. I also had the thought that we could schedule the con for Friday through Sunday and, once we have an idea of who will be able to make all three days and who will only be able to make Saturday and Sunday, schedule events for Friday specifically geared towards those able to attend on that day. I really think that GCS will be our best bet. I just got off the phone with the hotel I used to work at and they charge $1000 per four hour block. Way out our price range.

Steve
Nov 13th, '06, 02:49 PM
Why not move it back to Labor Day weekend? That seems like it would work for the store location, and it was when the first Herocon was held.

I do plan to attend, but travelling from California is easier when a longer weekend is available for us non-government employee types.

Are tickets required?

Currently no. This is (hopefully) a free event open to all HERO gamers and HERO want-to-be gamers.

There may be a request for donations to cover some expenses (like snacks, decorations, prizes)

What vendors are lined up?

I doubt any vendors will be there. However, the location is right over a game store.

Can we get us an official HERO Spokesman up there (I'm lookin' at you, Steve).

Once we are sure of the date and location, I'll put forward an invitation to DOJ.

Wait... I screwed up.

Okay, let's get this clear:

COLUMBUS DAY is a no-go due to a Magic release.

So, if we want a built in 3-day weekend, we can consider:

LABOR DAY
or
VETERAN'S DAY

Any opinions on those days?

I would say go with Veterans Day. A lot of people have family plans and/or end of summer plans for the Labor Day weekend. Going with Veterans day avoids that problem. Plus for our out of state members who may be traveling it means they can get off peak prices on everything from gas to hotels to airfare. Thoughts from others?

I'm liking this too. Also, Labor Day is too close to GenCon (IMO).

Hmm... how soon can we confirm this with GCS?

Hey y'all;

I've started training in Share Point (a collaborative internet platform, for lack of a better description). In a few weeks I'll have my own site to use & abuse, and Ilene said "Hey, why don't you ask the HEROCON guys if you can run a site for them."

Wouldn't have to be super fancy or anything, but I figured if you guys would be willing to help me out, I can get used to the demands of running a site, AND we'll have another nifty place to maintain all this stuff. It's own calendar, discussion board, etc.

What do you think?

As for the con's dates, according to your flyer and such, it is actually Saturday, Sunday, and Monday not Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I'm probably about 80% sure of attending and will decide in the next week or two -- if I go, I will likely submit Friends of Justice and Remarkable Wrong-Righters to be run. SuperSquad America is an eight hour game and I think that might be too big of a commitment for players at a con like this.

We are meeting with Ed on Saturday (the 8th) to check on progress. Also, there is a flyer on the website -- people have been printing them out and leaving them at local cons and the like. Please consider doing this to get the word out!

Also, we are pretty psyched about doing this next year, if only because this year is shaping up to be an awesome experience!

A quick note on prizes -- we've been gathering items (mostly via donations, but I have some NASA goodies) for GMs to give out to people. In addition, I highly suspect people like Darren and Dave to be bringing company product as well. If you have anything you'd like to add, let me know.

I'm hoping to have the various GMs go through the prize box(es) and pick out items they like. Anything left over will be offered up for the people in the European Enemies Brawl for it All game.

Note that GM's who have a registered game before the Convention's start will get first pick, after that it's first come first served for game prizes.

The intention is for GM's to award the donated product as prizes to the best RPer for each game. We will also have plenty of stuff for registered attendees as freebies as well.

In short, we have a ton of stuff. We will find some creative ways of making sure it's all given away. :)

BD, just be ready for the surgery.

I swear, I think it was harder on me than on Mrs Thag. Just seeing her cut open was kinda traumatic....If you get the right surgeon ,and do the things the doctor tells you to do your wife should be fine..but man, I was a wreck with worry ....

Mrs Thag had a shock pad on her incision, and it helped her heal faster.......

Kids were fine...

It's been a lot of fun. I've even had fun with games I haven't participated in myself. Proditor had a great paper mini for his War of the Worlds game, and his opening music wasn't half bad either.

And of course Rod Currie's convention superhero games are legendary, and I have to say, even sitting across the room from his game, I can see why. I'm half convinced he's taken his characters from some small indie comic book company, because some of the artwork he had there for mood looked exactly like a comic book cover.

And the forums poster who goes by Xavier Onassiss here, although he says he has nothing to add to any conversations here and therefore mostly lurks, is holding out on us. His Terracide campaign deserves more notoriety than it gets, largely because he never posts about it. And he could make significant contributions to the hard sci-fi discussions that pop up in the Star Hero forums. Ah well, Nestor eventually delurked, maybe XO will too some day.

At any rate, yeah, good times. And I heard a rumor that Susano would be writing a new Pirate Ninja Hero book...

I wasn't particularly a fan of pulp adventures before the con but after playing in Proditor's War of the Worlds game, Nestor's Hollow Earth Expedition game (remember kids kicking Germans in the knackers doesn't work nearly as well as a bar stool to the face) and Darren Watts' Hero All Stars 2007 (set in 1965 but still within shouting distance IMO) I am now hooked!

The entire weekend has been great and we look forward to wraping up with a bang today and to an even larger and better con in '08.

I have to admit that I approached HeroCon '07 with some trepidation. It was odd coming into a situation where I only knew a few people well and the rest not at all. I'm HAPPY to report, though, that everyone was wonderfully nice, very welcoming, very supportive of my lower knowledge of the rules and system hurdles and just generally KEWL people. Darren Watt's and Scott Heine are both excellent to RP with and just generally cool to chill with too. I never laughed so hard playing Texas Hold'Em!

Well, I had meant to swing by once more this afternoon, but things fell through. The original plan was that I'd be home when the kids got home and then Mrs Obvious would be home soon after. That got changed in the late morning to I'd be home for the kids and then I'd take them to Mrs Obvious' school so she could get some lesson prep done. Then the kids dragged their feet getting home and it was becoming extremely unlikely that anyone would still be there when I showed so I stayed home and grumped.

Anyway, it was nice meeting all the new folks and seeing some again that I'd met before. I wish I'd had the chance to say goodbye to everyone, and to tell the truth, I'm not sure I really said hi to everyone, so if you were there "goodbye" and "hi" if I didn't say it already. :D

Wow, this con was incredible from my point of view. I had a great, great time and I have nothing but high praise for our volunteers, our staff, our guests, and especially all the GM's and gamers who came out to support HeroCon 2007. Thank you all!

I'd be very interested to know what people thought of the convention - the goodie bags seemed to be a big hit (anyone find the bags to be a good idea or bad idea for next year?) and our prizes were raided pretty heavily indeed by the time everything wound to a close tonight.

My favorite memories: Scott Heine and Darren Watts - two awesome, awesome guests. Playing Texas Hold-Em with Darren. Playing Lazer Squid Nemesis. Listening to War of the Worlds Hero. Running Venture Brothers Hero. Playing in The New Circle with Oddhat. My critical hit in the Arduin game.

:) :) :)

I had an awesome time running and playing at Herocon! I also learned never play poker against Darren. Conversely, if Scott asks if you want to play Texas Hold-em, looks a little confused and say "Oh, is that a card game?" and then get a wheel barrel ready for your winnings. I keed Scott, I keed. ;)

Darren and Scott: Vis a vis that whole conversation over who has rights to what...you guys so need to talk some more and make all our fevered dreams come true. Additionally, you're also very snappy dressers. Yes, I am kissing up so you'll release cool product, why do you ask?

It was great to talk to Darren again, this time feeling less like death warmed over, and his Hero All-Stars game was awesome. Running my first con module was a hoot, and I wanted to thank the players who had suggestions on how to trim parts of it for future use. You inspired me to write a follow up adventure as well, so I may be running two things next year if there's space.

Ross. Venture Brothers Hero. My ribs were still sore the next day from laughing so hard. Truly an excellent time, and you did a superlative job getting us into the feel of the Venture Brothers universe. PLEASE run this again. And again. And Again!

Louis: Great to meet you in person, and absolutely, if we go ahead with a new game, you are on the "to call" list. :D It was a blast RPing with you, and I hope it's just the first time of many.

Mike: Thank you for a great weekend. I haven't had that much fun in a long time. I hope I can grab a seat at YOUR All-Star game next con, cuz I'm totally calling dibs on Sho Kosugi.

My HeroCon Report:

I've been to a lot of conventions, but this was my first time operating one as staff. Our location, Games & Stuff, was a real god-send: right across the street from lots of places to eat, right next door to a free parking garage, and a spacious gaming area right above the main store.

Ed, the owner of G&S, worked well with us to help get the con off to a great start, and I understand he did a brisk business in drinks and Hero products over the weekend.

We had two great panels: Darren told us about the new and upcoming stuff from Hero Games and brought some books from Comstar Games' Traveller Hero as prizes. We also auctioned off a 4th edition Hero Games T-shirt (one of the last of its kind) and the spiral-bound first test printing edition of Hero Fifth edition. Scott Heine and I chaired a panel about gaming groups and building characters together that was a rousing success. The discussion was a roundtable that included some very excellent points from both Darren and the boards' own Oddhat.

Our games, however, seemed to go even better. The two runs of Lazer Squid Nemesis were absolutely chock-full of laughter and sound effects. "A deep and immersive roleplaying experience." - indeed.

There was War of the Worlds Hero, which had a really impressive tripod cardboard miniature and sounded fantastic. Rod Currie ran two of his own superlative games, along with plenty of pulp and superhero action. The hero boards' own Xavier Onassis ran two games of Terracide "this one's on us" - which included some surprising plot twists and at least one handfull of assorted body parts (don't ask).

I got to run Venture Brothers Hero, which was a complete and total blast. All of my players were completely in character and could even do many of the voices exceptionally well! Dr. Orpheus blasted frogmen, Hank smacked Phantom Limb, and the henchmen swooped in to save the day at the end. A great time was had by all, and the Walking Eye was defeated. I'll definitely run this game again next year, or possibly sooner at Gen Con. That's gooood soup!

There was also Oddhat's New Circle game, which was a complete blast to play in. My character for this outing was Miss Junior Olympia, a Mary Marvel analogue, and I couldn't stop grinning at all the great opportunities for laughter and glee. The tambourine. Crushing a speaker. "Copper-topped chimps!" Hugging the horse-headed demon. Penn & Teller. Grabbing the staff. "Stop picking on him!" - It was a veritable cornucopia of awesome memories.

There were also some non-Hero games represented as well. Mekton Zeta was run where a group of freebooters fought off pirates and corporate greed over a shipment of advanced mecha. Arduin involved a group of fantasy adventurers exploring an extradimensional prison ship...which ended in the best critical hit I've ever had. Arduin has a very complete list of critical hits and fumbles, so when my percentile dice came up a 00, I was invited to roll again. 90. "Not only does your axe cleave the necromancer in two, Death himself shows up to applaud the kill and offers to slay someone of your choosing as a homage." That is completely, totally, F'in Metal.

I also played Texas Hold-em with Darren and Scott and Proditor and fiducia I believe. And I am TERRIBLE at card games. :) I ran out of chips three times, but it was a heck of a lot of fun nevertheless. Darren, you're the King of Cards :)

Our prize collection kept shrinking over the weekend. We gave away some real gems like Ex Machina and an entire collection of hardcover George R. R. Martin books. I'm so glad to see people give those items a good home.

We also had some great discussions with guests and attendees at the various dinners and lunches during and after the con. I am greatly looking forward to next year and I am sure we will have even more great games and prizes to give away.

Susano

My after con report.

The whole idea came together in 2006 when I thought about having an after GenCon get-together so local board members could gather and talk about, well, stuff. We had a great time, had some great discussions, and Ross said "let's do this next year!"

So we did.

First I must state that Ed, of Games and Stuff, was a god-send. He gave us space to hold the con, helped us in innumerable ways, and deserves a great deal of credit for making the con as success. As Ross mentioned, the location had room for up to 60-70 people, free parking, and food right across the street.

We had a total of 4 game periods, with 3-4 games running in each period. Most games had 5-6 people attending, so there was roughly 20-25 people involved at any one time. Total attendance was roughly 35 persons, which is twice last year's number.

Memorable games include Laser Squid Nemesis, which produced gales of laughter; Oddhat's New Titans, which featured Ro-Man (the gorilla in a diving helmet from Robot Monster); Venture Brothers Hero, which may have beat out LSN in the laughs; War of the Worlds: Champions, which proves Proditor can create some awesome character concepts (and can scare a whole team with a foe that does nothing!); the HEX demo (that turned at least two people into pulp fans); and Hero All-Stars, which has inspired me to attempt my own version.

We had a pile of prizes, many of which were taken home by happy attendees
, while Ed himself did a lot of business in Hero and Clix products.

We've learned some things for next time (only two days, for example, and no morning seminars). I'm not sure if we'll use G&S for next year (we probably will), but if things go as I hope, we won't be able to do so in 2009!

So, if you want to be part of HeroCon, and be able to say "I was there when!" PM or email me! Join the mailing list, be part of the creative process, help us provide you with a bigger and better gaming experience!

Viva la Hero Con!!!

:celebrate:celebrate:celebrate

This will be my first post here on the message boards. And HEROCon was my first con-going experience. I was also the first HERO game that I've ever run, in addition to being the first Con game I've ever run. So lots of firsts!

I would like to personally thank Ross Watson, Mike Surbrook, and Louis Billard for opening up the con with a no-holds-barred opinion on what ran.

So you can blame them for letting LAZER SQUID NEMESIS!!! happen! Yes, LSN was my (very sick) brain child. I want to also thanks everyone who participated for waiting until after the game to go completely insane. For those of you who were obviously too cool to join in on LAZER SQUID NEMESIS!!! there will always be next year. I promise to kick it up a notch with Lazer Grenades, Lazer Missiles, Lazer-thrower, and cactus people.

And OK, people? For reference? Lazers don't go "DFF" They go ZAP for FREEEAM or ZAKROW or something, just not "DFF".

sheesh. :) :p

Famous last words:
GM (Holding up an Image): "In the van you see Space Cucumber The Space Cucumber In A French Maid's Outfit, but you don't recognize him."
PCs: "Uh, why not?"
GM: "Well, because he's obviously not Space Cucumber The Space Cucumber - he's Space Cucumber The Space Cucumber In A French Maid's Outfit. A completely different NPC image and character sheet!"
PCs: *GROAN*

So if you were too cool for HEROCon 2007 or LAZER SQUID NEMESIS!!! you'll get another chance at HEROCon 2008. For there will be: "LAZER SQUID NEMESIS!!! and the Cactus People (A Christmas Special)" So join Splash Gordon, Slick Fury, Doc Oc, 008, Captain Nemo, Chop Suey and Bob as they save Squidopolis from certain destruction!

And bring your LAZER noises! Real LAZER noises!

I had a terrific time at HeroCon and was honored to be invited. You guys worked hard to put the event together, and it looked like everyone had a terrific time. Lots of laughs. Meeting new friends. Saving the world a couple of times. What more could you ask? (Well, I suppose I could ask for more poker chips seeing how I'm all out...) Looking forward to next year!

Thank you Mike, Ross and everyone for a great Con. It was great to see everyone and have a chance to game with new people. It was great to see so many new faces. Hopefully, those trying Hero for the first time will stay. I must also say I loved Proditor's game. I hope there will be a Sequel next year. Thank you all.

Me and my friend came from Texas for HERO Con and we are planing to come back for HERO Con 08! It was a blast Especially Ross Watson's Venture Bros. HERO game! I played Henchmen 21, and the Jawas are all spikes and rage quote was from me.

Wow! Well, you beat me for distance -- I came down from near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Of course, I'm still the only one who came from another country for HeroCon -- of course, some might argue that Texas is whole another country. :)

Not sure I made it clear at the con, but I was really impressed with how well you and the gang were able to organize and run HeroCon; it went from a get together at Mike's place to a real (if small) con in only a year. Great work. :)

So you guys aren't gunshy about it? The way you guys were talking it was almost sounding like you thought it was too much work.

At any rate, like I told watson, I wasn't there to see the organizing going on, but the results were great. Whether they were great enough to justify the work is your call, but I had fun with it, and hope to make it next year.

By the way, I thought the dice in the goodie bag was an inspired idea. Especially since I showed up the first day with no dice. :o

Yes, congratulations to the con organizers. It was fun. I'm not sure yet if I'll be back next year but odds are good.

I'm glad to hear you guys are ready to go again. I was involved in the organization of a gaming convention back in the early 90s. I took over as event coordinator halfway through when the previous EC had to move away. The con was reasonably successful but most of con committee didn't want to repeat the stress. The head of the committee ended up with a stomach ulcer from the experience and he's a pretty easy-going guy who normally isn't prone to stress.

This event was fairly stress-free (for me). I think Ross was going to have kittens Saturday morning. :D However, with people like Darren himself wanting to see this succeed, and with help from others in the local area, I'd like to think we can make this happen. I think the stress comes when we need to mvoe to a larger space.

I was afraid someone would mention DDC in this regard.

I know many people love it, but I had a terrible experience with them. My grandmother passed away after I registered and the service ended up being that weekend. They refused to give me a refund or move my reg to the following year. Fair enough, I guess, but then why would I want to have any dealings with them after that?

My roommate ended up going without me and she had a pretty miserable time. She got none of her first choices for games the entire weekend. Every other Con I know of has a prereg that's first come first serve, and, in my opinion, it works far, far better.

Too make matters worse despite emails and letters, they won't even take me off the mailing list.

So, yes, I'd be up for a HEROcon that gives me a different option.

While I hope Ed made a good profit from hosting Herocon, I kind of doubt it was enough to buy more floorspace to cater to a once-a-year event.

It wasn't nearly as much stress as I thought it would be. I will admit that I kept waiting for something to go horribly wrong the first day, though I'm just as happy nothing did. It helps that, as the Location Liasion, I mainly had to deal with Ed (the store owner) who is about as easy-going as they come. I think we'll be able to use him again next year as long as we don't more than double attendence. But never fear your dedicated convention committie is already plotting what to do if we need more space. :) I'd also like to say that haveing such great people attend did as much as anything to make things go smoothly.

My belated HeroCon report:

You'd think being out of work would leave me with time on my hands, but I've been swamped! So, my apologies to all for not posting this sooner.

First of all, I have to say that I really enjoyed assisting the convention committee throughout the weekend. HeroCon was a worthy cause, and I was glad to see the time and effort donated by myself and others paid off in a very successful convention! Kudos are also due to Ed and the staff at Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie, MD for providing the excellent venue which made the whole thing possible. And of course, many, many others made contributions to the 'prize vault' so our guests left with lots of good swag.

Our line-up of special guests at HeroCon also made the event a memorable weekend. In no particular order, Darren Watts, Scott Heine, and Rod Currie all made a 'leap of faith' to attend a small-ish unknown convention in its first year, and helped put HeroCon 'on the map.' They ran excellent games, hosted interesting discussion panels, and told us some great stories about gaming and the gaming biz over dinner after the Con. We all hope they enjoyed themselves and hope to have them back next year for HeroCon III.

We were also graced with a good number of high-quality GM's, and I haven't heard a single negative report on any of this year's gaming events. Maethalion's 'Laser Squid Nemesis' had everyone making bad fish puns, playing with pipe-cleaner-miniatures, and loving it! Bawb4 ran an excellent Yakuza game called 'Bloody Territories' which may have been HeroCon's most underrated event. There was drama. There was intrigue. There was...GUNPLAY!!! And I learned more about the Yakuza film genre in those four hours than from any two Yakuza movies I could've rented. Nicely done. Sadly, I only had time to play in three games at HeroCon, but luckily for me, the third was Oddhat's 'New Circle: Young Titans' game. How funny was this? All I can say is, go read the quotes! The personal high point for me was getting immolated, thereby inducting Oddhat into the ranks of the 'burn Grady' club. (A select and prestigious group of GM's, indeed!)

I also had the pleasure of running my own game, 'Terracide: This One's On Us', in two parts. The two-part format worked well, and I had a very good group of smart, serious players who provided some very helpful, positive feedback on a campaign setting which is still very much a 'work in progress.' Many thanks, guys. You'll all be listed as playtesters when my book comes out in ten or twenty years....

And that brings me to...our attendees in general. Some were experienced Hero players, others came to learn about Hero, while those who came for other games had a good time as well. I've said it before, and I'll repeat it now. Hero players rock, as a community, not just as gamers. It was great to meet some new faces, see a few I hadn't in a while, and for those I missed...I'll be back next year.

XO

I am from Texas where we still have barns, actual barns with real livestock and everything, inside the city limits of some of our major metropolitan areas.

I was once told there were more cattle than people inside Harris County (Houston). I figure that was exaggeration (even back in the 70's), but not by much.
