I am thinking of working on a Wiki for my New Cairo game.
Its a weird science, pulp fiction, alternate history game I have been working on the last two years.
The setting is mainly set in New Cairo, egypt. I stole a lot of details from Arron Allstons Doc Shide books.
I would like to have a set up where myself and a couple of my friends could edit the infomation and have it out to share. My ultimate goal would be to have some folks on this here board to have a look and make suggestions.
So,
Do I need my own web space??
Where do I get web space?/ Does not some one here work for G0 Daddy??
What kinda software do I need to use and how much (free would be really nice)
Thanks

I use PBwiki.
No software, they provide the webspace, unlimited pages. Limited file storage unless you pay 15 a month (you get 15 meg I think) - but our group has a photobucket and just like to the photobucket pics on our wiki.
Easy to use, and easy to get started.
And free.

I've been using pmwiki for my campaign. Free and open-source, which is cool. It requires PHP, and would require of course that you have your own web space. I'm neither a PHP programmer nor a web administrator, but I am a techie-programmer type, so bear that in mind as I say that the installation was pretty simple as well.
PMWiki wasn't the only thing I looked at, but I settled on it because it uses text files for storage (i.e., no database), had a host of plugins, decent documentation, and what appeared to be a fairly active community surrounding it. One of my favorite features is customizable security, so I can have a section specifically for myself, and the rest of the site is open to the players.

No free webspace providers will be suitable for a wiki. You need some form of code processing for a wiki and that level of control could be abused - therefore subscriptions and money are always involved.
You can of course, use my Hero Wiki which is specifically designed for anyone who wants to put Hero-related games on a wiki (see my sig).
But if you want a wiki separate from other Hero projects, have a look at this thread I posted-

Lots of free Wikis though. :)

Yep - mainly because it's open source.
The programs are free - but having a server capable of processing those programs is not.

I'm talking about free server and software - sort of like Blogs give you acess to the blogging software and the space to store it in.
PB Wiki charges nothing, hosts unlimited pages/wikis and is free. :)

I do have to say that in general Wikis for a game are really cool.
We've got all our campaigns on our wiki (5 of them) and it works very well. :) Each player uploads their characters, and the GMs the notes for thier games. One campaign has a tradition of "things on the post board" that everyone makes little additions to.
Sorry about not pushing your Curufea (a HERO wiki is a cool concept) - but I have been using PBwiki for almost a year, and it is a breeze to use. :)
