View Full Version : For 2005…Some of My Wishes…

I know that the 2004 schedule is about released. So I thought I would see if my wish list would be given some thought. If they are on for 2004, great. If not, then please consider them for 2005.
A new edition of Aaron Allston’s Stikeforce. It is still consider to be one of the best supplement ever produced and I still make reference it. Needs to be redone in 5th edition, with lots of room for new material. I would buy a hard cover edition, no question.
Scott Bennie’s long awaited campaign book on his Gestalt Universe. I still have the original text files of his Gestalt campaign that circle through the internet.
A campaign book based Scott F. Heine’s Protectors would be nice. I have loved the Protectors characters since first reading To Serve and Protect. Before the old board melt down, Scott was giving an idea of the fun he had in that campaign.
Yet another campaign book, I have been dieing to see for is the George MacDonald’s Guardians. A book on the very first Champions group and all those characters we saw during the first three editions of Champions.

While I agree with you that all of those books would be cool to see, we need to realize that they're all alternate universes involving characters that DOJ doesn't (currently) own. Given the hassles that would go along with that, I can't think it's too likely that they'll set aside a big block of their publishing schedule for books that take place outside the current Hero Universe...

On one of his recent Weekly Update announcement pages, Steve Long mentioned that Scott Bennie's Gestalt definitely WILL be seeing the light of day as a HERO Plus e-book, maybe this year. So at least that wish is coming true.:)
Aaron Allston has, from all reports, been working on an update and expansion of his Strike Force campaign book for years. Steve said that they might be interested in doing it, although again most likely as an e-book, assuming DoJ and Mr. Allston can come to terms.. Discussions have been very tentative and uncommitted, but at least there's hope.
Unfortunately, in an earlier discussion board on the topic, Steve categorically excluded any possibility of the Guardians and Protectors projects. I for one was really looking forward to Scott Heine's Champions by the Bay, which he says was largely completed, but such is life.:(

I'll wait until after Friday to list off the things I would like to see. Who knows. I might get all my wishes in the current schedule. :)
I would love to see a new Strikeforce book, as well as a Guardians book. I was never a huge fan of the Protectors, but I would not mind seeing a source book for the too. I'm easy. :) Personally though, I prefer that DOJ stick with the idea of only publishing material which fits within the current Hero Universe structure. I really do not have a great desire to see "alternate" characters. There are too many "official" characters I would like to see information on first.
What I would really like to see with the above material is for the authors to take it, get a license from DOJ, and publish it on their own. Strike Force Universe would probably be a very popular line for Aaron Allston. 95% of the current Hero Games community would buy it. Having more companies producing HERO System material is better for the game then just having DOJ produce everything. It also helps distribute the glut; keeping DOJ from getting bogged down in production details.

I figure if you took a poll (Hint, Hint...) Strike Force would be the top book on the majority's list (it's on mine). Any rumor/ work on more San Angelo goodness? (Yes, I know it's Gold Rushes baby again, but I get more info from here...)

This little tidbit was posted by Durnin on the "HERO System Discussion" board, under "Opinions on Hero products":

I have it on very good authority that The Dragon's Gate is approaching completion. :) It is an excellent suppliment for the San Angelo: City of Heroes world book, but would also be useful for coloring any Chinatown in any city that has supers.
The majority of the characters are martial artists which would also fit them into a Ninja Hero game as well. In a fantasy setting a little bit of GM adjustment would be required, but it could easily be turned into an oriental village. There are several teachers, apothocaries, and temples that could be used for a monk character's background.
In summary I would highly recommend it:D

One of the posters here (Durnin) is apparently doing some writing for GRG. He made a comment that the published Dragon's Gate would be out shortly, but considering that a new San Angelo is not out yet, I am not going to put to hold my breath. :)
My guess is that GRG will get San Angelo, Enemies of San Angelo, and possibly Dragon's Gate out this year. The new stuff like PART and Sands of Time will probably have to wait until next year; which is bad for GRG because many of us already have the old stuff and are not going to be in a huge rush to buy slightly updated reprints. I like the world though (I use San Angelo as a fictional city in my CU game) and look forward to seeing it all come out.

Yep, it's a shame they ever sold it to CyberGames. I tried to tell Mark.....
Anywho...that's in the past. I'd buy an updated and EXPANDED San Angelo....

Well, Dragon's Gate was available as an Ebook for a while (got my copy and everything), so it might be good to put it out as a real book first to try to get back into the groove of things.
Or maybe not.
___
I just hope that GRG goes with some math checkers while they're rewriting things in general. Yeeks. Excellent ideas, wonderful filler, makes a good, living world for campaign use.
But crappy character math.

So, is there any news on the status of this project? Am I one of the few still hoping for it to see the light of day as a published product?

First, Dragon's Gate has reportedly shipped from the printer already (just a tad earlier than originally scheduled), and at least one person on the SACoH Mailing List has already begun drooling over his copy. The second edition of the core book is well under way, as is San Angelo's Most Wanted (the new edition of Enemies of San Angelo).
Second, my wish list for 2005 includes more than just Champions books. I'd like to see a setting book for Ninja Hero, one or two regional Champions books, The Interstellar Age, one or two historical settings, some really truly general-purpose Ultimate books (Gadgeteer and Base come to mind as good possibilities), a little extra support for the Terran Empire setting (such as an adventure, or a book detailing one of the non-Terran regions of space), and one or two historical settings (Golden Age for Champions and perhaps a gaslight-era setting would be two good suggestions).

We (or at this point I, really) are beginning to mull over the 2005 release schedule. I hate to dash any hopes, but the odds of any major projects involving other campaign settings are extremely slim. They would generally have to be e-books, and since our experiences have shown that e-books sell at extraordinarily pathetic levels, they aren't something we can consider doing at this time... and quite possibly ever.
We'll have a full announcement on the 2005 schedule at DunDraCon, in mid-February.

I hate to be the voice of pessimism, but if Hero did put out a new Strike Force supplament, would it really be a huge hit? Would it be big enough to justify pulling a book away from the current Champions Universe? Or is it a dream project for the old guard? The origional came out 20 years ago and is currently much beloved but it is extremely obscure.
If you were gaming Champions when it came out you probably have it.
If you got lucky in the used bin at your FLGS you might have it. Other than that the modern audience will not know what it is. The average modern gamer would probably see an Alliston "Strike Force FREd" book as a foray into supers by the Star Wars novels guy.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it would be great. I really liked the Champions Genre book and I would love some more personalized stuff from Alliston. I'm with Monolith on this one, the current universe has so much potential that it is a crime to waste it. Hero has been doing as well as it has by looking foreward rather than backwards.
Of course if it came out I would be in line to buy it.:D

When I was first getting into Hero system, I found Strike Force at a used bookstore (Powell's in Portland.. what a place) for $7.95. I picked it up, and it quickly became my favorite Champions supplement.
I think it would be great for an updated and expanded version of that 'universe'.
However, if I understand the information about licensing, I am not sure that Steve and Co., would be very enthusiastic about giving a license to Aaron to self publish Strike Force.
Aaron certainly would meet the standards of having worked with the people at Hero before and/or having Steve know that he does good work.
The difficult part would be the part about 'competition'. While Hero does not seem to rule out licensing a competing product, they mention that they are unlikely to license a product that competes with their own product(s). Many of us are far more inclined to purchase the setting books (such as the settings for superhero champions) because we are sold on the Hero system, and the champions universe is the published material using that system. If Strike Force were to be published using the Hero system, then the Champions setting books would have a competitor (while many of us would buy both, it would offer an alternative for those that would only buy one).
While I think it would be GREAT to get a new version of Strike Force, I am not sure that Hero would be interested in licensing a competitor. I think the best chance we have of getting a new Strike Force update is from a website or through Steve and Aaron coming to terms to have it be a DoJ publication.
That is my guess, anyway...:)

To my knowledge DOJ has given licenses to the following companies to produce competing superhero material:
Hartfelt Productions, for The Kandris Seal.
Gold Rush Games, for their San Angelo line.
Albert Deschesne, for his Metaverse
Spectrum Games, for its Omlevex book.
There is also some talk that Misfit Studios is also working out a license for its World Not Known superhero line. So from that alone we see that five companies are producing, or trying to produce, competing product. I do not think DOJ cares whether the product is a direct competition. I would think if Aaron wanted to produce his material from his own company that he would easily get a license from DOJ, and that the fans would embrace most of it too.
Of course my own opinion is that, as much as I love all that old material, I am much more interested in seeing new material being published for the system. New ideas, new directions, and new heroes and villains are very appealing to me. I just do not think I would be as interested in seeing a redo for Strikeforce, or the Circle, or the Blood. I would still buy it though. :)

One other thing...
I think Steve's mentioned somewhere that he's already put together enough material for Fantasy Hero Grimoire 2. Even though I'd probably never use it and would buy it only to have a truly complete set of Hero books, I think it would be great to see that tome kick off the new year in 2005. :D

I second the Ninja Hero support, I like Ninja Hero but have no experience with the genre and would love to have something to get me started.
I really hope to see Pulp Hero (Justice Inc) and a Victorian age Hero would be great (Space 1899, 20,000 leagues under the sea, LXG kinda stuff)
Horror would be nice but I think the last time it came up the 2009 schedule was iffy for it.
The Ultimate Disadvantage and The Ultimate Skill would probably be fairly easy for DoJ to whip up and could be helpful to many particularly those new to Hero. The Ultimate Base would also be nice to see particularly if it goes beyond supers and covers a variety of genres.
I'd like to see some sort of support for Dark Champions since it will be out in 2004 (hopefully something useful for the heroic end).
I wouldn't pass up a Grimoire 2.

Yes, I would very much like to see a "Champions Of Light" sourcebook detailing all, or most, of the other superheroes in the Champions Universe. And a new "Enemies" book will be needed by then too. And I second, or third, or forth the adventures and organizations. There is still just a huge amount of detail in the CU which needs to be filled in.

I have been thinking what I would like to see. First, if DOJ keep on doing things like they do now I will be completely happy.
Now the wish list:
Champions:
1. Strike Force: I think Strike Force 5th for be a big seller, if DOJ and Aaron can come to an agreement.
2. DOJ Universe: I think DOJ has done a great job with the current Champions Universe, but I would like to see what superhero world Steve, Darren, Allen, Ben, and Tina would create from scrath.
3. Ultimate Power Armor
Fantasy Hero:
1. Magic Item: A book of magic item for FH, maybe more creation rules.
2. Pirate Hero: A book about Fantasy Hero on the high seas.
3, City/County book for the different Fantasy Hero ages.
Star Hero:
1. Planet/region for the different StarHero ages.
New Genres:
1. Pulp Hero/Horror Hero
2. Danger Inc./Spy Hero
General Books:
1. The Ultimate NPC: A resource for creation NPC in different genres.

What would I like for Hero's 2k5 schedule?
For Champions
- I would buy a Strikeforce Revisited book whether it were a book or e-book (in fact, I think I'd prefer an e-book).
- I would love to see another setting for superheroes ... something like the difference between Marvel & DC.
- More info on organizations. I loved the Viper book and looking foward to the UNTIL one. I think the two I'm especially looking foward to is the Primus & Demon ones. How about a full blown PSI one?
- More enemies! Bring back some of the other neat characters, as well as making some nifty new ones :)
- Maybe a classics reprint line of e-books ... I would love that :)
For FH
- A book of species & packages
- A book of magic items
- Swashbuckling Hero: a book on pirates & musketeers
- A FH Companion, including rules on Furry fantasy, anime fantasy and other additional rules.
- Urban Fantasy Hero
For SH
- A Guide to the Galaxy series
- More alien species
- More Tech
- A starships tech book (including deck plans)
- A Psi book
- A SH companion, including rules on Furry Space, anime space opera, detailed sci-fi conventions, etc.
- Post-Apocalyptic Hero
Ninja Hero
- An opponents book
- A "Street Fighter"-esque campaign book
- A Ninja Hero Character book, with more Martial Arts action and pacakages.
Other
- Pulp Hero
- Horror Hero
- More Ultimate series ... I think I'd especially like to see the Ultimate speedster and Ultimate Base.
- Champions Heroclix ;) (Hey, this is a wish list ;) )
- A major License ... I'd kill to see DC Hero ;)

After watching this discussion a bit, looking over the list of planned books in the "Our Products" section, and mulling it over some, here's how I think I'd do it. It assumes another 18-book schedule (Steve may give us yet another pleasant surprise and come up with 24), and is listed more or less in chronological order.
Fantasy Hero Grimoire 2
The Ultimate Base
To Fear The Cosmos [Galactic Champions enemies]
Tuala Morn
PRIMUS
The Interstellar Age
Nipponjin [Ninja Hero/Fantasy Hero setting]
Golden Age Champions
Everyman
Pulp Hero
Danger International
The Vorsan Expanse
Justice, Inc. [Pulp Hero subgenre]
The Ultimate Weapon (or The Ultimate Marksman)
The Evil That Men Do
The Lost World [Pulp Hero/Fantasy Hero setting]
Fantasy Europe
PSI

The problem with your schedule, Bob, is that there is not enough Champions material on it. PRIMUS and PSI are the only two books that would expand upon the CU in any way (and I really have no interests in a PSI book). We need expansions on IHA, ARGENT, and we need a new Enemies book. I think out of an 18 book schedule at least 7-9 of those books need to be Champions Universe specific, because no matter how universal DOJ wishes to make the system, Champions is still the work-horse, IMO. Part of the problem which I have about the 2004 schedule is that it is so light in CU material.

Listed below is what I would like to see published in 2005 just for the Champions Universe.
Inner Worlds: A book giving information on Atlantians, Empyreans, Lemurians, and any and all other unusual “human” races within the Champions Universe. This would cover the heroes, villains, and homelands of the races.
The Corporate World: A book detailing the major corporations, its heroes, villains, and importance to the Champions Universe. The book would also cover ARGENT, and also focus heavily on Franklin Stone and ACI, detailing his corporate empire and evil ambitions.
Champions Of Light: A book detailing all the NPC heroes within the campaign, as well as the structure of the various superhero teams within the Champions Universe. The book would also give options on how to make the characters villains for people not inclined to use them in the CU setting.
Mutant Hunters: A book detailing IHA in its entirety. The book will cover the organization, agents, supers working for it, technology, and agenda. The book will also cover details on public figures, both pro and con, as well as npc mutants working against the agenda in a covert way.
Champions Of Evil: A book detailing another 100 supervillains from within the Champions Universe. That is be along the lines of CKC, but would also give more pair villains along the lines of the old Panda/Raccoon, Thunder/Lightning, Radar/Sonar, etc.
PRIMUS: A book detailing the structure, operatives, equipment, and supers of the PRIMUS organization within the Champions Universe. It would stat out a typical Silver Avenger, and then give packages for named Silver Avengers. The book would also stat out the Golden Avenger, as well as some PRIMUS specific hunteds.
On top of that I would like to see 1-2 more adventures. Perhaps see Engine Of Destruction and see Shades Of Black make it to print as well (where I am sure it would prove profitable).

The top ones for me are CyberHERO and HorrorHERO.
I've got a bunch of players that were really into Cyberpunk 2020. I think they'd like CyberHERO just as well or better. I'd probably like it better, just based on what I saw in the 4e version. Then, of course, R. Talsorian has been promising a new edition since, oooohh, about 1998.
HorrorHERO would be cool to have as an update just because of all the cool ways you can smush it into other genres. CthulhuPunk, Space Horror, Dark Fantasy.
Hmmm... Anybody here ever run a Horror Supers game?

Shelley Crystal Mactyre seems to have a lock on doing the official PRIMUS update, but last I heard she was deeply mired in working for her degree, so it's hard to say whether she'd be able to get to it by 2005. One can hope, though.
In the meantime (I'm sure you're aware of this, Monolith, but others might not be), Shelley's PRIMUS e-book is still available in the Online Store. It's for 4E, but quite easy to adapt, and it gives just about everything you asked for, and more. 114 pages of Champs goodness, and with the end-of-year sale it's only $7.96!

Just the adventure arc for the "Horror World" setting in the 4E sourcebook Champions in 3-D. I'm not really a fan of the horror genre, but my group wanted to try mixing horror and supers, and this was available. It's actually quite an effective setting, since the menace is one that can't really be defeated through force alone, so even superheroes will be terrified.
Horror World is brilliantly written, but I warn you in all seriousness: it's not for the faint-hearted. It is the most nightmarish setting for a superhero game I've ever read.

Being a big fan of SciFi and SH, I know that I will not get many of the hopefully 18 books in 2005, but here are the ones I am most hoping to see:
(1) Star Hero Battlegrounds (a TE or AW campaign complete with NPCs, maps and deck plans)
(2) Interstellar HERO (a SH setting book for the period before AW, 2200-2300)
(3) Spacedogs (SH normals, preferrably from TE, AW, and the Galactic Federation settings)
(4) Solar HERO (a SH setting book for 2080 to 2200)
(5) Cyber HERO (setting book for Dark Champions crossover to SH, covering 2020 to 2080)
As long as SH gets 3-4 books in 2005, I'll be happy. With fantasy HERO, Champions, Dark Champions, and possibly a new 2005 genre book, I know that Star HERO may take a back seat, but I hope it's not neglected.

Well, it's been quite a while since this was last brought up, as far as I can tell. Is it going to see print, maybe as a Hero Plus product? What's the latest word?
The barriers to its publication have been money, layout. art, and lack of publishing experience. Money shouldn't be an issue now. I'm learning InDesign and the first layouts are going well, so the layout issue (I hope) is resolved. An art list is being done at the same time as layout, and when I have that done, I'll contact some artists and commission it. I have a possible publishing partner, and hopefully having a print-ready book will make it easier for them to come to an agreement. If not, there's POD/pdf publishing.
If everything goes well, I'll have a book out in the first half of next year. This is, however, the RPG industry, where things rarely go smoothly.

That's great news, Scott. I look forward to buying it when it sees print.
