View Full Version : Recomend some ps2 games
Lord Mhoram

Yep it's that time again, where I come looking for recomendations.
My birthday is coming up, and I was thinking on buying some more PS2 games, given they are cheap and a local shop has a "buy 3 get one free" on used games. :) Plus we just got Fable for the Computer and the wife is going to be gaming on my computer (where she usually games the PS2) so I'll have more time on the PS2. :)
Game types I like (and RPGs need not be mentioned - the wife has most of those).
I like FPS, however I have a bunch on the computer - if there are any nifty ones for the PS2 I'd love to know (I have Time Splitters and Red Faction 2).
Any kind of Mecha game (prefereable 1st person, but do 3rd) - I like big honkin' robots.
Good fighters; especiallly if they aren't in the big series (Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua).
Platformers - I loved Spyro and Crash Bandicoot on the PS1.
"Run around beat ups" - Adventure games I guess; I just got both Shifters and Rygar and really enjoy those - however I don't care for modern era types (not a fan of Syphon Filter, Metal Gear solid or Tomb Raider). I plan on getting God of War.
Racing - I like some, but I prefer Science Fiction style and hover kind of racers (F zero for the Super Nintendo was a favorite as was Jet Moto for PS1)
Oh, yeah, I also never ever play online (even with my computers games) so online based games are right out.
Even after my first "Pre birthday" bunch of games I only have 10 ps2 games* (Time Splitters, Gungriffon Blaze, Rygar, Shifters, Streetfighter EX 3, Tekken Tage, Firtual Fighter 4 Evolution, Wipeout Fusion, Yu Yu Hakusho Dark Tournement (fan of the series and it seems to be a decent fighter), and Red Faction 2).
I'm looking for good series that I forgot about, or nice little diamonds that aren't as well known. Plus any game (whether in the genres above or not) that are just too good to pass up.
* As opposed to the wife who has 51 - all RPGs of one sort or another.
Recomends will be repped. :)

You like non-modern beat'em up adventure games... I think you'd like Capcom's Maximo. It's basically a 3D extension of the Ghosts n' Goblins series.

The SOCOM series is good, its the only FPS that I've played with a good AI team control. Rainbox 6 was good but once the mission deviated from the plan the AI team members really started to fall apart.
There are 3 so far
SOCOM, SOCOM2 and SOCOM3 all use a similar interface but the later games add to the game (as you would expect), SOCOM 3 adds drivable vehicles. The story line in the games is pretty decent too. They have been out awhile so should be pretty cheap (I think they were $9.99, $19.99 and $29.99 the last time I was at Walmart) and if you buy used you shouldn't have much trouble finding them.
One of my favorites was a surprise to me
The Hitman series is very good, very free form (lots of ways to get the job done), you can play ultra stealth taking your time to only take out your target or walk in guns blazing taking out everything in your path. It has a good story line, I describe as X-files meets the Punisher.
Hitman: Agent 47, Hitman2, Hitman: Contracts, Hitman: Blood Money
I was only able to find HM: Agent 47 for the PC but the rest are easy to find on PS2. So far my favorite was Hitman 2, followed closely by Hitman Blood Money. Contracts is basically a remake of the 1st game but the story line is weak, I think the designers got artsy fartsy and went for this amnesiac thing instead of having an easily followed story line. Still it has some good missions including one that reminds me of the final battle in The Professional.
My wife is not a big fan of FPS games but I haven't been able to get her off the PS2 with Hitman so I can play.
If you like old Video games there are 2 midway collections and I just got a Capcom collection.
I was also surprised that I liked the Grand Theft Auto series so much, GTA3 Liberty City and GTA4 Vice City are both fun, again very free form, you can follow mission by mission or just steal a car and drive around causing mischief. Sure you play a thug but you are causing problems for other crooks so it doesn't bother me.

Those are fun, my son has the whole series.
Jax 2 is another one, kind of a post apacalypse FPS / RPG with speeder bikes and storm troopers.

Forgot about that one - my boss' son has that and plays it when I'm over at his place working. It looked pretty cool.

Ratchet and Clank.
I just checked out reviews... I remember when the ps2 first came out the people that made Spyro said they weren't going to do any PS2 Spyro games, and wanted to move to something new... the reviews comment that this is that team. I love the Spyro games, and trust the creators.
Thanks for that one. Would not likely have seen it.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the Socom series. I usually find team games wtih the computer controlling your squad unplayable (I gave up on the diablo games and other computer RPGs when you have computer controlled teammates).
I saw both the hitman games used recently at fairly low prices. Cool.

Do you like "survival" horror games, Lord? I'm playing through Fatal Frame III currently and am having a ball. All of the Fatal Frame games have been really good, and the storylines are actually coherent.

Horror Survival - is that like the Resident Evil games?
Didn't care for them. Genreally don't care for horror, in books, movies, TV or games.

Unlike most "team" games SOCOM has a fairly simple control method to allow you to give orders. The list of available orders is long enough to cover most issues (about 20 in all ranging from hold fire or follow me to assault that room with flashbangs), of course like all AI you do get the occasional stuck on the wall or ignoring the bad guy killing him but its much less frequent than most I've played.
There is also mic you can add allowing you to give orders verbally even to the AI, I don't have that so don't know how well it actually works.
The game uses pretty much all the features on the controller which is a little intimidating at first but once you get the hang of it I found it was pretty intuitive and you can easily issue commands, change weapons etc even during a firefight.
I found early on I tended to have the second element of the fireteam hang back, but as I've gotten more comfortable with the commands I use them much more to secure potential escape routes for the enemy, take a high position providing cover for me etc.
I don't typically like "team" games either but the interface for SOCOM is well done.

I also don't like giving orders to a character that I am not in conrol of. I can't play any kind of tactical game at all (turn or real time) just because I just get distracted to easy. I don't want to plan intricate strategys and give orders, I want to blow down the door and kill things. :)

The GTA games are all enjoyable life-eaters.;)
For a change of pace, the Naval Ops games are interesting and kinda fun.
Dynasty Warriors/Mystic Heroes for just mindless hack n'slash fun.
SoulCalibur 2/3. One of the best fighting game series ever.
Guilty Gear is also good.

The SOCOM team AI is very good... for AI. They will still do extremely stupid things once in a while, or in specific parts of certain levels, but you can work around it with tighter control (i.e. "Sit! Stay! Good boy.")
SOCOM online is much too fun. Don't ever play it that way because you won't be able to stop. Ever.

You almost never need the AI team in the game. You can just set them to "follow" and "fire at will" and drag them around, letting them watch your back.
The headset is excellent for online play since it lets you talk to the immature 12-year-olds on your team who are infinitely better than you.

Game types I like (and RPGs need not be mentioned - the wife has most of those).
Regardless, if you do not yet own a copy of Valkyrie Profile 2, you are missing out on one of the greatest Action/RPG hybrids of all time. The game is 100% brilliant. The fights are challenging, using different party members is interesting, and while it lacks the charm of the first one, it makes up for it in raw entertainment and horsepower. 9.5/10 - it's THAT GOOD.
I like FPS, however I have a bunch on the computer - if there are any nifty ones for the PS2 I'd love to know (I have Time Splitters and Red Faction 2).
Wrong console; the greatest console FPS ever created is HALO - which doesn't exist on the PS2. I'm assuming you've played it, but there is a cooperative version of Half Life if you want to get that, but there are better PC versions, so ... why? Ghost Recon & Rainbow Six all suffer from the same problem: better on an Xbox or a PC, no need to get it here.
Any kind of Mecha game (prefereable 1st person, but do 3rd) - I like big honkin' robots.
For action, check out reviews on the various Armored Core games; they drive ME nuts because the control scheme is very 90s, whereas I'm trying to play in the 21st Century - I want the LEFT STICK to move and RIGHT STICK NEEDS TO LOOK THE F_CK AROUND. But that's me. However, they let you build up, design, refine, and command a Giant Robot.
If you want the strategy version, I highly recommend Front Mission 3 or 4, depending; I have 3, and it's excellent. I have 4, but haven't really played it. Both got mediocre reviews, but I love 3 to death. It's a great game, with a solid story and a boat load of depth. Lastly, if you want the RPG version of Giant Robot, then you'd want to get any of the Xenosaga games, but Xenogears (PS One) did it first and better and more anime styled.
Good fighters; especiallly if they aren't in the big series (Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua).
Soul Calibur 2 was the best of the best in the last group; I can also recommend Bloody Roar, as it's a rocking good time regardless. You get to play a lycanthrope. How cool is that?! Answer: Very! Smashable cages, flaming pits, and a story about as thin as a door room wall. But lots of fun.
Platformers - I loved Spyro and Crash Bandicoot on the PS1.
You can play these your DAMN self. :p
"Run around beat ups" - Adventure games I guess; I just got both Shifters and Rygar and really enjoy those - however I don't care for modern era types (not a fan of Syphon Filter, Metal Gear solid or Tomb Raider). I plan on getting God of War.
Why don't you own a copy of Okami, possibly the greatest PS2 adventure game ever made? No, I retract that.
THE Greatest PS2 Adventure Game Ever Made. Get it before you can't. Also, the Prince of Persia series is above average, but not my thing. God of War is NUTTY hard, but very satisfying. For some reason that game kicks my ass. Also, if you can get it, please pick up a copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the PS One. It's a perfect Castlevania game.
Racing - I like some, but I prefer Science Fiction style and hover kind of racers (F zero for the Super Nintendo was a favorite as was Jet Moto for PS1)
Gran Turismo. Burnout is LOT of fun for pure arcade racing - it's about as realistic as F-Zero is. Seriously, get it. you'll love it. Very fast, very slick, very pretty, lots of loud explosions. I did it just for Crash Mode. :eg:
Oh, yeah, I also never ever play online (even with my computers games) so online based games are right out.
If I want to be insulted I'll walk down to DC.

I think I've given you a broad range that are NOT RPGs; some were already mentioned, including Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and so on. Let me know if you're looking for something more specific than I've provided; I can give you full 1000+ word reviews for a lot of those. :D

Just looked over mycollection to see what else I'd reccomend.
Beyond Good & Evil was a lot of fun. Gameplay was very similar to Rachet & Clank, minus the massive variety of weapons. The fact that the main character is a photographer has some interesting gameplay elements. I loved trying to collect pictures of all the wildlife in the world :D
The GTA series was already mentioned. Despite the adult themes and bad press, these games frankly rock my socks. GTA3 was my main motivator for getting a PS2, and GTA: Vice City was the pinnacle for me. As teen of the 80's and someone who watched Miami Vice religiouslyu back in the day, it was my favorite of the series. I couldn't get into San Andreas. Too much "thug life" for my taste.
Also by Rockstar, State of Emergency is a good mindless carnage game, but the missions are mui-mucho repetetive. Still, the joy of cutting apart an entire STREET worth of rampaging looters & corrupt state police with a minigun isn't to be discounted ;)
Future Tactics: The Uprising was a game I got completely on a whim, that ended up devouring a week or so of my life. A neat british made turn based tactical game, with an amusing plotline, cool character development and kick butt gameplay. Unlike most turn based games, there is an actual element of player skill in the combat, and the secondary damage effects are GROOVY. Alomost EVERYTHING can be destroyed. One particular level with continually respawning enemies led me to see just how much damage I could do. Carved the "arena" down to bedrock, I did. Plus... If you can find it, its dirt cheap. I got my copy brand new at Fry's for a fiver. The only downside? Not much replayablility.
Siphon Filter: The Omega Strain was fun, if frustrating. A good espionage/modern combat game, shifting between FPS and 3rd person mode depending on preference and/or weapon mode in use. I've played the whole Siphon Filter series, and generally liked them all. There are a metric buttload of things you can unlock in this game...new weapons, character upgrades, customization options for your characters, unlockable levels etc... In many cases you'll find youself going back to revist old levels to improve your "score" with better available gear load-outs and thus unlock even more goodies. The big downside of this? A fair amount of the really groovy stuff is only unlockable if you play online. LAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! If the content is on the smegging disc, I want to be able to access it without co-op play. Like you, I detest online gaming.
Oh, yeah... Bloodrayne and Bloodrayne 2 were both quite amusing, as are the various Legacy of Kain/Blood Omen games. Much vampire goodness.
Thats all for now... p'haps more later.

Two things I almost forgot:
Great beat 'em up, from what I'm told, is God Hand (and for those keeping score, it isn't a reference to the divine, hence I'm not skipping the 'o.') And... crap, I can't remember the name of it.
...
Eh, while I'm on the subject:
Rent: BLACK, which is a great little Dark Champions/Realistic guns shooter that is so short it isn't worth buying, but I had a BLAST playing it.
You didn't list the Call of Duty games, which I played on the 360, and again, you can likely play on the PC, but I'm looking up this other game I haven't found yet (argh) and was reminded of them in particular.
Also, a fantastic gem of a game, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System is one of THE BEST 3rd Person action/adventure games I have EVER played. I can't properly explain it, I played it so long ago I nearly forgot about it. This should be DIRT cheap and is a must own. The game itself I score 8/10 - personal slant, 10/10. I played it straight through until I beat it, and that took a chunk of time; it was a solid, long game with lots of action and half-way decent puzzle solving.
DARKWATCH. That's what it was called. Both my friends Kareem & Shaun recommended it; I haven't played it, but I keep meaning to grab a copy. Also, James Bond: Everything or Nothing is STUPID HARD but very good, regardless.
The Devil May Cry series is what happens when you make Castlevania 3D and it doesn't suck; I started playing the first one and got stuck, but I really enjoyed it. Were I too play it with a guide I might enjoy it more. :p
That's after I flipped through a couple of review guides to see if I'd forgotten anything - other than Darkwatch and Godhand they're all games I've played and can recommend.

Just in case I wasn't clear you can play without really giving the AI team members much thought, like Old Man said you can have them follow you for cover or sit tight when you don't want them in your way.
When I first started playing thats all I did with them, as I got used to the interface I started using them more for simple tasks like blocking enemy escape routes or causing diversions.
I just started playing SOCOM 3 (got it for Xmas) which has added drivable vehicles, the patrol boat armed with 2 miniguns and an auto grenade launcher is much fun, I just like to drive up and down the river looking for bad guys :eg:

My personal favorites are:
Okami - just a fun adventure/light-rpg
Hulk Ultimate Destruction - break stuff
Devil May Cry 3
God of War
Final Fantasy X-2 (Charlie's Angels with an airship!)
Kingdom Hearts
I'm playing BG&E and it seems fun, but I think it might be overhyped. I'd probably like it more if it had more RPG elements in the same setting. The characters all seem interesting and have a Disney feel (which I like). I'm also playing Champions of Norrath and it's basically Diablo with less polish and is fun in a mind-numbing way.

Thanks for all the recomends and comments. I have a list of stuff to check out now.
The main reason I was looking for such was that I had a birthday coming up (now past) that I was going to go nuts and buy games on. Now some of my choices were dependant on price, and where they were (I'd rather spend 7 bucks a game on 2 game I was interested in, then $15 on a game I wanted somewhat more - however if it were a game I really wanted, I didn't let that stop me.)
So Here is the entire haul I got; it seemed only fair to say what I ended up buying. I'm including some of those that were "pre birthday" ones that I mentioned in the first post:
Barbarian
Hypersonic Extreme
Rygar
Shifters
Virtual Fighter 4 Evolution
Wipeout Fusion
X-men Legends
Yu Yu Hakusho Dark Tournement
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance
Defender
DOA 2 Hardcore
Gun
Jak and Daxter: Precursor Legacy
X-men Legends 2
Power Drome
Red Faction
Red Faction 2
Maximo
Soul Caliber 2
Shadow of the Collusus.
All for under 180 or so. :)

X-Men Legends 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance are both quite good and, unlike the first X-Men game make good multiplayer games.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy is ok, but I found it a bit repetitive. It's good, but it doesn't have the replay value of an X-Men Legends type game because you really end up playing each character the same way. X-men Legends and Marvel UA, you really do have to play differently if you use a different main character.
BTW: When you beat Marvel Ultimate Alliance, make sure you let the credits play all the way through, there is a fun surprise at the end.

I saw that one when I was getting the others. It looked rather cute. :)

Contrast: I hated DAH, it moved WAY too slow and I found the missions boring and tedious. Considering that this has specifically contrasting reviews, please rent prior to purchase -- unless its so damn cheap that it won't matter.

Honestly, DAH is probably a better rental. I got a good week or so out of it, but find that it has good replayability for me as just a "jump in and wreak some carnage" time waster, much the same way I occasionally still mess around with GTA even tho I've beaten the heck out of it.
I'll probably pick up DAH 2 used.

The second one is set in the sixties, which is just as random as the first one, really. I haven't played it, having so strongly disliked the original. But hey, that's why everyone posts. One man's poison is another man's... er... poison. Or something.

The Dynasty Warriors series tickles my fancy. My wife loves platformers, and really dug Sly Racoon and Tak and the Power of Juju.
And a friend of mine loved Tenchu.
Most of the others have been mentioned.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but LEGO Star Wars is a fun little time waster. Let me put it this way: the prequel trilogy comes out BETTER in LEGO Star Wars. But that's just my opinion ;)
Other games...I had some fun with Call of Duty 2, but it does get a bit repetitive. Might be good as a renter, spend a day or five running around shooting things. And it sounds like you're covered RPG wise, so I'll skip on the' Tales of' ranting (largely positive)

I second that GoW! That game rawks!

God of War is about to get a flip through the guide to figure out WTF I have to do next. Stuck. Great game, though.

I've been running through Red Faction. Enjoying that - now that I got used to the controls.
