View Full Version : I'm boycotting Steve Jackson game products.

Steve jackson has decided to have his products made in Asia and imported to America.

I've decided to stop buying any and all SJG products until they're made in America again.

As an American, I'm sick and tired of so-called "American" businesses taking jobs out of America and sending them overseas. Doing so hurts America's economy and hurts American workers. Also it encourages the business practices that some Asian countries follow, such as cheap child labor in Taiwan and slave labor in China.

I'm sick and tired of young americans working hard to get thru college only to be comdemned to a series of McJobs because employers are making more persona profit sending american jobs overseas. I'm sick of seeing outsourcing being used to drive down the wages of the middle and working classes while insreasing the profits of those at the top of the economic pyramid.

I'm asking all American gamers who buy SJG products and who are tired of seeing American jobs going overseas to save business owners a few bucks while hurting American workers and supporting terrible labor practices in Asia to join me in this boycott until "evil steve" brings his printing business back to America.

(This really bites me hard, BTW. I was really looking forward to ultratech...)

The problem is that SJG is a small business with a very small profit margin. It is very likely that it is a case of outsource or out of business. I agree with you about outsourcing as it applies to multi-million and multi-billion dollar companies but for a small business I have to set my reflexive “make it in America” attitude aside. So I will still be buying SJG products.

The Hero boards are not really an appropriate place to play out a personal vendetta against SJG. There is a lot of crossover between the two systems, between the writers of the two systems, and between gamers who enjoy both systems. With all due respect, I request that you take these types of posts elsewhere, or keep them to yourself.

I agree one hundred percent.

What SJG has to do is weigh the benefit of making products overseas and losing business because of the move.

They lose my busibness, but if they net gain then they made the profitable choice, right?

keyes_bill,

I happen to disagree with his post but not his right to make it. Also why did you assume the OP has a “personal vendetta” against SJG? I guess I’m a little confused since it seems to me that you jumped on the OP with little provocation. Is there something I am missing?

There was another post by the OP about SJ personally that was a little less than complimentary. I would call this post on the line, but coupled with the previous vindictive thread it takes it over the line. Also as Bill said, talking about boycotting one company on a competitors site seems crass.

While I think the topic of outsourcing printing by game companies is pertinent, it could have been done in a less contentious manner.

What BlackSword said. Two posts in this vein in two days is too many.

While you are well within your rights to make this post, and have remained essentially civil with this one, I don't particularly care whose products you do and don't buy (hint: better to walk the walk than blow hot air about it), and don't think its necessary to slam hero's competitors on the boards. Why? Because its not what we're about. You'll see more hero-slamming here (even from fans) than slamming other game companies. Its not really the tenor of the boards, and repeated posts about the evils of Steve Jackson are pretty off key (well, not for the NGD, but not up here in the lands of light it is). Also, a lot of gaming companies, being small press, can only print using cheaper foreign printers if they want to print at all. Find them a competitive American printer and they'll use them. Print on Demand might change this some... maybe. Compete or Die - its the American Way. You might be surprised which companies use publishers "abroad"...

I think the only problem with the post is that if it were made in "Non-Gaming Discussion" people would just throw in their two cents for or against and move on.

It was probably put here because it technically is gaming discussion.

I can't remember the last time I bought a Steve Jackson product. I think maybe some cardboard minis about 10 years ago.

I don't seen manufacturing out of country as being worth cutting off my nose. I'm willing to bet that we can go through the house of any American on this thread and find many objects that were manufactured elsewhere, regardless of the brandname and country of residence of the corp.

As long as you don't buy it at Walmart, it's all good! (Sorry, couldn't reisist ;))

As an American living abroad who manages a small manufacturing business (I made general manager, woo-hoo) I'm always happy when I can out-compete my fellow Americans back home due to the market I live in. Economics are murder. Compete or die.

The OP has gone down this route before (two days ago) and been told (in no uncertain terms) to stop.

Let's be clear:

These forums are here for you. They are also here to help support and promote Hero Games -- which happens to be a role-playing game. The RPG industry has been rather hard-hit over the past few years. Steve Jackson and others are doing what they can to stay afloat.

These forums will not be used as a platform to attack and denounce RPGs. Yes, some have been able to voice discontent with other systems (and with the Hero System). They will continue to be able to do so. Schwarzwald took his "vendetta" to another level -- he is no longer allowed to voice his discontent with this or other RPGs on these forums.

His previous thread was locked and an appropriate infraction issued (actually, most thought I was too easy on him with the infraction). This thread was created mere days after the previous one and very nearly earned him a spam infraction (which would permanently ban him from these forums). I gave him a final warning instead and have now locked this thread.

If you choose to voice discontent with RPGs (Hero System or otherwise) and those who spend their time and money creating them, I would suggest that you do so with a certain degree of tact and candor.
