View Full Version : Taking Forever to Save, Load

I'm getting huge lags when trying to save characters, load characters, and load prefabs with HD v3. McAffee isn't turning up anything as far as a virus or spyware is concerned, hardrive is less than 50% full and has been defraged recently, and I'm not seeing similar lags in other programs. Any suggestions on what I should check next?

Try checking your Java install, once mine got wonked somehow and a fresh install picked up the speed somewhat.
Another thing I do is to uninstall all prefabs after using them on a character so that when I open/close HD I am only loading the character and not a bunch of prefabs.

Thanks for the Java thought. I'll try it.
I don't keep any prefabs loaded, and HD itself opens and closes fine. It's only when I save a character the first time, when I load a character, or when I load prefabs that I hit very significant lag.

Latest Java is installed, didn't help. Any other ideas on improving Character Save Times, Character Load Times, and Prefab Load times requested.

You should be able to tell McAffee to not scan .hdc files (and whatever the prefab extension is) on access. See if that helps.

When you say that you have the latest version of Java installed, which version is that? Last I checked Sun's page is still defaulting to the latest Java 5 if you tell it to give you Java, but you can get Java 6 from their page if you try. In general HDv3 runs MUCH faster under Java 6.

OK, I'll make sure it's Java 6. Thanks for the idea.

One quick note on this: when I've seen Java installations run into I/O problems in the past, it's been necessary to uninstall Java from the system prior to re-installing the latest release. It seems to be some of the shared system libraries that are having problems.

Which is just a good general troubleshooting tip. Always a good idea to uninstall a problematical subsystem before you reinstall it when possible. :)

Has Java 6 been released, or is this still a beta (or earlier?)

It's been released for some time now (and announced in the discussion forum).

Completely removing and re-installing Java and completely removing and re-installing Hero Designer didn't help. I'm not sure what's going on.

re-installing HD won't have any effect on the issue (as you've seen) -- the problem is with file I/O on your system and (unfortunately) may be a sign of a bit more serious of an issue if removing/reinstalling Java didn't have any effect.
Try running some system diagnostic tools on your drives, checking for file fragmentation, bad clusters, etc.
Additionally, check the state of any network drives.
