I'm anxiious to move my Creator character files into Designer and have been able to move a couple of simple templates successfully using the directions in the documentation BUT with some of the more complicated characters I am getting error messages regarding the template.

What gives?

I'll go ahead and suggest you give some details...like error message ect.....they will need that to offer a solution....at least the usually need it...

Also (just to jump the gun on our erstwhile HC guru), please give the version of HC that you're using as well as wether you are using the "default" Hero template or a custom one (like some of the 5th ed. templates that are floating around).

An Error occurred retrieving the template used for the saved character, Using "Standard Super" template

Error Message: Error of line 98 of document file <file path and name>: Expected "<SKILLS>" to terminate the elemetnon line 63

Follows with a second

An error occurred loading the template, Data loss may occur if you save.

Please shut down Hero Designer and restart, repeat of Error Message above.

Symtom of no data being transfered from the files that have been filtered via Creator. I have been able to get some simple files to load. Simple fix? Something someone is already aware of? Something I need to do to the source file before exporting?

Problem is occurring in files filtered from Creator 1.9.5, source characters were created using the default template.

Thanks

Please send me the following and I'll make sure they're forwarded on appropriately:

1. The original CW/MC file.

2. The converted .hdc file

I am having the same EXACT problems Earthson is having getting files to come over from Hero Creator to Hero Designer. I am using the same version of Hero Creator, and I am getting the same errors. I follow the directions to create .hdc documents which Hero Designer seems to recognize, but when I try to open those documents, I get the same error messages that Earthson gets.

Any suggestions on fixes. Like Earthson, I have quite a few Hero Creator files I would love to bring over to Hero Designer.

Thanks.

I tried to post here the original Hero Creator file (a sample file I cannot convert), but was unable because I cannot post here a file with the .chr extension. I am, however, posting the .hdc file that I created from the Hero Creator file. Thanks.

You should have zip the files together. This forum accepts files with the .zip extenstion.

What you posted is NOT a Hero Designer file. It's a Hero Creator file. You just put a .hdc extension onto it. There has been no conversion done on that file.

If you open it up in a text editor, you'll see what I mean.

Here's the hdc file (zipped) after I ran it through the filter. I looked at the original in Creator and my current theory is that it's the lists of skills that may be causing some confusion for the filter.

I'll see if a little editing of the XML may fix things.

Hmm, Wierd. I did edit the XML, but noticed that some skills weren't even listed. So I went back to creator, took everything out of the package lists and reconverted.

It still dropped some skills. I blame the filter, but this will at least get Lance partially loaded.

Were you using a customized .hds file in Creator, or a .chr file loaded as a data sheet when the characters were created? If so, some of the info that the filter expects to be in each given skill may not have been in the data sheet used to create the character (or may not have been in the place the filter expected to find it). I used custom data sheets some in Creator, and I've that that bit me a couple of times in converting to HD via the filter.

I bet that was the problem. But since it's somebody elses character, I'll let them deal with it for now.

Dan,

I am curious if you have made any inroads in this conversion issue? I e-mailed the files to you a while ago. Any progress?

Sorry I hadn't seen this thread before. It sounds like there may be a problem with the conversion script choking on a list or something to that effect. Earthson, I know that you've already sent Dan a copy of both the CW file and the HD file, but if you could send them both to me (I'm the one that wrote the script) I'll see what I can see.

Hero Creator 1.9.5, no custom templates that I'm aware of. If I use the "Filter Text" command it dumps the supposedly converted character sheet onto the clipboard. Should I be dumping the clipboard into Notepad before saving it as a .hdc file? Trying to save directly from the clipboard viewer seems to work until I try to open the file, at which point HD chokes.

I'll try to get the exact error messages for you, but since the boxes are hanging off the edge of my screen this may take a little while.

I'm not sure what "Filter Text" command you are refering to. What you should be doing is using the "Save As" command, and for save as type select "Filtered Text". Make sure the name of the file ends in .hdc and you should be good to go. If after using this procedure you still have problems, if you want to send the original CW file to cwmc@herodesigner.com, I'll be happy to take a look at it.

OK, that's got it.

To be honest, I never used the "Save As" to save filtered text in my HC days. If I was going to put a character sheet into a text document, I always used "Edit -> Filter Copy" and pasted it into my word processor. This must be my new thing to learn for the day.
