I think I asked this a couple of years ago on these boards. But, I since forgot. And moved on to other projects. Anyhow.

Does anybody know where I can find info/website on the size of armed forces and what not of the all the countries of the world? I dont care about exact sizes, estimates would be nice (as I'm sure we dont know exact sizes of nations like N korea for example). Including all small countries too. Might not need them, but you never know. I've got me an idea on some things and I would like actual numbers to base it off of. :straight:

Thanks for any help.

The CIA website has an information section for all countries. The data there includes population demographics (how many, what age, etc.), GDP, percentage of GDP going into military spending, size / state of defence forces, and so forth.

Also, most defence forces worthy of the name have their own websites these days.

The Strategy Page (http://www.strategypage.com) has a lot of that sort of information. You could also check the CIA World Factbook. (https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/)

Also the latest version doesn't give direct numbers, but http://www.dod.mil/pubs/allied.html is a detailed comparison of US and allied forces, prepared each year by the pentagon's reserach arm.

cheers, Mark

FWIW the English-language version of the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense's website is here: http://www.mil.ru/eng/

You might want to look at _How to Make War_ by James Dunnigan. It contains a lot more info than what you are looking for, but is a valuable book for anyone interested in military gaming.

Oh, yes. Second that idea. The only concern is just how current some of its tabulated data might be. My own copy is first edition (1988) - presumably, there have been later updates but I have no idea about this.

I have the third edition (1993). According to Amazon.com, the fourth edition was released in 2003.

Have you tried Jane's Defense (http://jdw.janes.com/public/jdw/index.shtml)? They're extremely thorough, though I'm pretty sure you need a subscription to get the real juicy data.

Already thought of Jane's but yes, the data is safely locked away behind a subscription wall. If you wanted to pay, the place to go would be Jane's World Armies, which would certainly have that info. The free site is a great source for military news, though.

cheers, Mark
