I just replaced my old flash drive (working fine electronically, but falling apart physically) and my new one, a 1GB Memorex TravelDrive, came with a surprise that I hadn't noticed was advertised on the packaging until after I opened it: it can run software automatically from itself on any Windows-based system, via a system called U3. I've been using the packaged email program, Thunderbird, along with the U3 version of Opera.

Now, probably nobody on here has ever even heard of U3, much less know the answer to my query, but here goes anyway. (And you've probably all guessed what it is by now.)

Is there any way to run HD from my TravelDrive via U3?

Have you tried running the installer and pointing it to the Flash Drive instead of your C: drive?

I can launch the program from the HDv3.jar located on my Flash Drive (which has U3 as well) but I already ran the installer on the C: Drive.

I removed U3 from my drives. I realized that I never used it and it just took up space. I run HD just fine from my flash drives on any computer that has Java installed. I don't believe I ever installed it on any computer other than the first one so that I could get everything unpacked nicely.

I'll second that on both points. The problem I saw with U3 was that while it did provide a framework for portable applications, most of the software I could find that was made for U3 was for sale. Considering that I am increasingly using Free/Open Source Software, this was a major drawback.

If you are looking for portable software, I recommend that you look at The Portable Freeware Collection (http://www.portablefreeware.com/) and/or PortableApps.com (http://portableapps.com/).
