Ooh. Free stuff (as in beer). This will be a good chance to try this software out.

Bryce has one of the most advance render engines out there.

It's also got UI for crap, but I can use it easily enough.

I tried DAZ a while back but never got very far with it. Perhaps I'll have more luck with Bryce 5.5.

Bryce is great for outdoor scenery. If you haven't used DAZ Studio in a while, you might consider downloading the latest release. It is much improved and is still free. In addition they have several of the models (I think Micheal 3.0, Akio 3.0, and Stepanie 3.0) for free. And the new Apollo Maximus 2007 model has been released and is free too.

Quick recommend - if you try bryce 5.5 and like it, take advantage of the cheap upgrade to version 6 while it lasts. v.6 has a host of minor, but significant improvements (mostly under the hood), which overall, improve your life greatly.

Be aware, however, that Bryce is basically a landscaping program (you can in fact do much more with it, if you want, but still). To make full typical roleplayer use of it, you need characters, which basically means either Poser or Daz studio (I don't care much for Studio, though I do use it routinely - but you can't beat the price of Free!)

Secondly, if you do get interested/hooked, there is just a monster butt-load of free stuff on the net, which will allow you to customise your scenes: this comes with a warning too - if you *do* get interested, it becomes a major consumer of time! :D

cheers, Mark

Markdoc described things perfectly! A lot pf people/artists will rig a character in Poser or DAZ Studio, then export the dressed and posed figure into a Bryce (having setup a scene in Bryce peviously), then Render the picture and save th render in a graphic format like jpg.

By monster-butt load of free stuff we are talking gigabytes, if not terabytes.

I also agree it can be VERY time consuming, and if you like creating... can be addictive :D

Addictive, oh hell yes. I never got very into Bryce, but I am a Daz|Studio junkie (rendering a Frazetta style scene as I type this in fact, all Ork Chieftain and Barbarian warrioress stuff!). For a free package it's cost me far too much money over the last year or so...

There are rumors of a soon to be released DAZ Studio Version 2... for free

Of course soon for Daz could be anytime in the next decade.
