I am considering getting myself a web site of my very own to host a discussion board (mainly for my own on-line games and such), various bits of Web content, and so on. Can anyone give me some starting advice on such a thing? I'm not precisely a beginner, but it's been so many years since last time I had such a resource that I may as well be.

Hosting is definitely a lot cheaper than it used to be. I use DreamHost, since they're cheap, responsive to support issues, and have a lot of auto-installable software (forums, WordPress, and so on).
If you want to roll your own website from scratch, check out the free authoring program Nvu, at http://www.nvu.com.

I Use GoDaddy. For about $9.00 per year I have my own domain, and hosting costs me $6.99 per month for that I get the following features...
Plan Features
• 100 GB Space
• 1,000 GB Transfer
• 1,000 Email Accounts
• Unlimited Web sites (https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?ci=9009#)
• FREE! Software
• 25 MySQL Databases
• Unlimited Email Forwards
• Forums, Blogging, Photo Galleries
• Metropolis Hosting Community (https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?ci=9009#tabs)
• $25 Google® AdWords® Credit (javascript:openGoogleAdWords();)1
• $50 Microsoft® adCenter Credit† (javascript:openMicrosoftAdCenter();)
The plans get even cheaper if you pre-pay for the year rather than go month to month.

I'm a pair.com (http://www.pair.com) user myself. Very reliable, in six years, zero problems. And they support some open source projects as well.

I currently use DiscountASP.NET , which caters to ASP.NET developers. I'm extremely happy with them, but its definitely a niche market appeal.

I've been happy with Bluehost.com for the last 2 yrs (and counting). They have plans down to $6.99 per month, and that includes your domain registration. Lots of features and well worth a look.

I use DreamHost as well - I've got 3 sites on the one account at the moment (i.e. 3 different domain names) - www.curufea.com www.asif.dreamhosters.com and newceres.com
