View Full Version : [Twisted Game Concept] VG Supers

NOTE: This is not a game I intend to run. This is merely an idea that crossed my mind randomly and I am curious to see what you might think of this idea, how you would do it, and what characters you would make.
This is a fairly standard champions game with the following twist:
Through some unknown proccess garbled in technobabble from another dimension in the distand future of the distant past, video game characters manage to appear in the real world, looking just like real people but with all the personality (a la backstory), powers, and adjusted appearance of the game characters.
For example: if Mario were brought over into the real world, he would not be an 8-bit character but instead look more realistic. Let the screams of terror commence.
So...
What do you think?
How would you do this?
What character would you play? (Stats would be nice.)

I would probably start with one or more of these (http://surbrook.devermore.net/adaptationsvideogame/videogamechar.html). ;)

Something kind of like that happened in the 80s cartoon Spider-man and his Amazing Friends, 2nd season, episode 7... "Videoman." :D

I think there's some fun to be had in that - kind of a reverse "self-insertion", whereby instead of a writer creating a story about a real person going to a fictional world, it's a story about a fictional character coming to the real world.
I got dibs on Black vs. White.

A team based on Paper Mario has been done for the new circle thread. Chad Reilly has done a lot of fighting game characters/final fantasy characters.
I guess you just have to write down what abilities the characters have and build to suit.
I like the Nintendo Characters like Link and Mario so I would probably build one of them for such a game.

My brother, when I told him about that possibility, figured he'd like to play as Kay (Legend of Kay), Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper and the thevious Raccoonus, Sly 2: Band of Theives, Sly 3: Honor among Theives) Or the ultimate gadgeteer, Ratchet (Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet Deadlocked, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters)

Personally: Telekinesis, No Range, OIF, Only to hold things to Focus.
And a massively Increased Maximum Aid to TK, linked to use of TK.
But the actual build would be an ugly, ugly, ugly thing....

As an aside - Adam's right. Depending on mood, either Kay, Sly, or Ratchet. Kay's probably got the most in terms of apparent superpowers of the three, followed by Sly (or exceeded by Sly, if you go by the first game), and Ratchet's one of the most spectacular gadgeteer/gun bunnies to ever pick up a weapon.

True... but the PCs reaction the first time they see a huge ball of screaming pedestrians, horn-blaring vehicles, shop-frontage-smashing light-poles, etc, rolling down the street towards them would be worth it.

I can imagine the Prince of the Cosmos as a villain of that sort, like Silver Surfer in the second Fantastic Four movie (from what I've heard) but with a more noble ambition.

I would play (and I don't have time to write them up, but...) Depending on mood:
John 117 (ya think?)
Samas Aran (with full blown MP weapon arm, morph ball, etc.)
Ryu (Street Fighter)
Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)
Bionic Commando
JC Denton from Deus Ex (if I'm feeling terribly Cyberpunkish)
Dante (Devil May Cry)
Those are a few that I could easily get into.

The Surfer wasn't a villain, he was a Herald. They handled it really well for a franchise out of which I had no expectations. I was stunned.

The Director's Cut was a lot more stomachable, but I wouldn't call it "art." It's a full supers film, and felt like a first shot at establishing a team. The second film I actually had fun watching.
I know. I was shocked too. Note: I'm not saying it's good, or even that you'll like it, but I had fun, which is a lot of why I go to movies.

It bears mentioning that this is theoretically possible in a mainstream Champions Universe game, thanks to the cosmology. IIRC, there's a place called the Imaginal Realms, where everything that's ever been imagined exists. It's just a matter of pulling it through (and watching the copyright lawyers explode).
Hmm. Assuming we limit ourselves to properties that were video games first (as opposed to other media that video games were based on, like Star Wars'n'stuff), my first pick would probably be either Fox McCloud or his galpal Krystal. :)

My list would include:
Sly Cooper or Carmelita Fox (both from the Sly Cooper series)
An incarnation of Link (Legend of Zelda), preferably the one from Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask or the one from Link's Awakening
Samus Aran (Metroid)
Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy, not exactly certain which one though)
Wendy Koopa (Super Mario Bros.), if I could get away with it
Just out of curiosity, how would it deal with game series that are more multiversal than sequential? I mean like Final Fantasy, where each game is pretty much in a different setting, or possibly Legend of Zelda, since I know there's at least four different incarnations of Princess Zelda and Link the hero.
Spidey88
Jan 9th, '08, 09:07 PM
I'm assuming we're dealing with characters that originated in video games, as opposed to just anybody who's been in one (eg. Luke Skywalker, a zillion superheroes, etc.).
He wouldn't be THE most powerful character available, but playing as Gex would be fun. I really enjoyed those games; and an agile, wisecracking talking lizard who can climb walls (and is constantly quoting movies and T.V.) is smack dab right in the middle of my comfort zone as far as characters are concerned...
Honestly, I can't imagine a much better fit for me.

Well, As Final Fantasy rarely has continuity between its titles, Digital Actualization would probably lead to more characters. For a LoZ type such as Link, the result could be multiple Links, perhaps wach one having a slightly different personality to suit the game they came from.

Well, I'm glad you find Gex so fitting.
When you think of it, he is actually very much like Spiderman, with a long tongue that makes Gene Simmons (or whoever the guy with the long tongue on Metallica or KISS is) feel insufficient.

A few possibilities have just come to me for things a campaign may cover:
If Bronze/Iron Age: Would Sprites (Video game characters) have the same civil rights as humans? Joe Schmoe can cast a vote, but can Mario or Ratchet? Wou;ld there likely be a "Sprite Hysteria" given the controversy over Video Games and the fact that the characters have now become a reality.
Other Ages: How would relationships work out? Naturally, we all expect Sly and Carmelita to be lovers, but what about Samus Aran/Master Cheif (still a straight relkationship)? What implications would exist there? And, while they came from the games and now exist from the real world, would Nintendo have to Liscense from Mario, Link, Fox and the others? Would Capcom have to liscense from Megaman or Ryu? What if a given sprite ends up in a situation unfit for the game they originated from, like Mario falsely accused of burglary and murder?
Some interesting things to think about...

I think we were primarily working off properties that were video games first. Pokemon was a video game that got an anime/manga about it, whereas Digimon was an anime/manga first then got a licensed video game.
But yes, if we're going with either one, Renamon is another hottie. I've tried statting her before, but it's a bear to do on 350 without getting overly creative (statting the nearly useless Viximon and giving it Multiforms past 350 points) or, well, the character sucking, though that's relative to the power level ... if you consider Champion level to be 'standard superhero', then you can use Rookie level for thug-beating and Ultimate level for the climactic battles.

I think we were primarily working off properties that were video games first. Pokemon was a video game that got an anime/manga about it, whereas Digimon was an anime/manga first then got a licensed video game.
Well, actually, if we wanted to get nitpicky, Digimon actually began as a virtual pet toy that pre-dated Pokemon by a couple of years.
Digimon started out as a digital pet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_pet) called "Digital Monster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digimon_virtual_pet)," similar in style and concept to the Tamagotchi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamagotchi). It was planned by Wiz and released by Bandai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandai) on June 26 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_26), 1997 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997). The toy began as the simple concept of a Tamagotchi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamagotchi) for boys (as Bandai was also the creator of the Tamagotchi). The v-pet is similar to its predecessors, with the exceptions of being much harder and being able to connect to fight other Digimon v-pets. Every owner would start with a Baby Digimon, train it, evolve it, take care of it, and then have battles with other Digimon owners to see who was stronger. The Digimon pet had several evolution capabilities and abilities too, so many owners had many different Digimon. In December, the second generation of Digital Monster was released, followed by a third edition in 1998. Now the new Tamagotchi Digimon is Pendulum that has a total of 9 in the series. Bandai also has released a Non Related Digimon Tamagotchi.
Of course, then came the other stuff. But then, I wouldn't worry too much about that as long as the characters are good.
Any VG character prior to 1990 would be hard to stat out at the standard point level, admittedly.

The version that I have is the one that doesn't have "Cockfighting" in the title.
Though it does seem silly that nobody minds Pokemon until you bring up the fact that it's cutesy cockfighting, and then folks complain that you're bastardizing people's childhoods.
