I think you want HERO Central, but don't quote me on that. There are often people posting to the Player Finder for PBEMs and PBPs and such, so those options exist. What about your area? Is there an FLGS (and no, the F isn't for Friendly) where you can meet a regular group?

there is, but nobody will touch anything that is not DnD.

You do know why the core text is 592 pages long, right? It's to add weight.
Weight that you use to beat the heathens about the HEAD AND NECK until they SUBMIT TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER.
*foam, foam, froth*
Sorry. We get a little worked up around here...

that's why i bought the Sidekick for ten bucks and then posted it in my googlegroup so that my players had access to it. i consider it the players handbook of Hero System.

Play by post is much more prevelant than chat.
Though, there is functioning chat with die roller capability.

Time consuming, yes. Boring, not so much, depending, as always, on the players and GM.

Depends. If you write like that, yes it would be boring. But, like someone before me said... Depends on GM and players.
Have a look around, perhaps you can drum up some interest in a play by chat game.

I have played Fantasy Hero, Blackpowder Hero, and D&D 3.5 on the HeroCentral chat engine and enjoyed it immensely.
The actual game names would be:
Sharn: City of Towers
Musket and Sabre
The Savage Tide
Fun, fun, fun.

The main problem with Play-By-Chat, at least in my experience, is that it is hard to get people to sit in front of their computers and type for 4-6 hours at a time. You also run into scheduling conflicts with different time zones and such. It CAN work, don’t get me wrong, but it is just a different a dynamic from face-to-face games as it is from play-by-post games. I’ve often thought about getting involved in a play-by-chat but always seem to run into scheduling difficulties.

I've found a good site, and there's a fantasy campaign in the works that will be calling for players soon. Check my sig.

Have you tried ventrillo for talking during a session rather than typing in chat? It is free and the new server version allows up to 8 participants for free, and most importantly it isn't Skype.

I've roleplayed via Google Talk, where I was the only online player the rest were around the table. It actually wasn't bad, but I don't know how it would work if everyone was online.
You get the same scheduling and timezone difficulties as online chat, of course. And I'd also look into an online whiteboard (skrbl.com (http://www.skrbl.com) or Imagination Cubed (http://www.imaginationcubed.com/LaunchPage) look interesting) to share information, maps, etc.
