View Full Version : Got another one submitted

I just finished my next article for DH, and submitted it. This was a big one for me, as it wasn't an advice article or collection of abilities type thing (like my talents and Gifts article were), but actually a character article. That was tough for me - and I don't know why, I love building characters - but it does take a little more work and a different kind of thinking and writing than just coming up with mechanics.
So I am rather proud that I have done that, and am trepidatious about what Dave will think. :angst:
No real reason for this post. other than this was something of a milestone for me, and wanted to share. :D

Always good to have more characters. Just curious, which genre is the character?
Did you find the tough part the actual writing of background, personality, etc. as opposed to the actual character writeup? I've created what seems like hundreds of characters over the years (the characteristics/skills/powers stuff), but it wasn't until fairly recently that I started doing the full writeup (with background, et al). That was a tough thing for me at first, but I found I actually understood the character even better, and often made changes to the char/skills/powers based upon what I wrote in the background, tactics, or even personality.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing the character in print.

Fantasy. Seems to be my DH niche. :)

Backgrounds in two cases, character write up in one. I've always been fairly good at backgrounds, and I had backgrounds for them- the hard part was beating the writing of the background into something publication worthy, and given them enough pizazz that others would find them useful or interesting.

Thanks.
My goal is to have 3 (or more) articles to Dave at any one time, so as soon as one gets published another gets sent. That way he can choose any that fit the space or theme requirements of the issue. :)
Right now I have my FH races article, another collection of talents, and the character one I just sent in. :)

FH races article? Maybe he could team that up with my TE races article...
(Dave, did I ever send you the updated version of that?)

Wow, I'm impressed. You have quite the article assembly line going. :hail: I found getting one of them out the door to be hard enough, although admittedly it was fairly hefty.
Congratulations on your character submission. I'm a little surprised that this is your first one. Having seen your other posted writeups I have no doubt that this article will be worth picking up.
In my case the hardest part was formatting all the elements of the character writeups to publication standards - lots of fiddly bits to keep track of. Character backgrounds and histories come pretty easily to me once I settle on a concept. My problem has never been coming up with (hopefully) interesting details, but keeping them to a reasonable length. :o

I guess I'll go with a short description - it's got three characters. I took a classic archetype (in this case paladin) and wrote up three characters that are not the stereotypical paladin. If it is received well I intend to do a series of them, with each one detailed 3 unusual characters of a particular archetype (hitting thieves, Clerics, Mages ect). Each one has the same package from FH, but are all very unique.

To be honest 60 to 70 percent of my article fodder is stuff I write for my FH game. Lots of talents, spells, new races, characters. So mostly I just have to collate them, write the frame, and clean everything up to publication standards. :)
