View Full Version : Shared prefabs vs. copyrights

So I was thinking that it'd be cool if I built a prefab with all of the martial arts from UMA in it, so that I could create MA characters quickly and easily. If I made such a beast, I imagined, perhaps others would like to use it too, so maybe HERO Games would post it on their Free Stuff page.

But then I realized that, technically, anyone could then use a significant portion of UMA's content without actually buying the book; one could download the .hdp file, parse it with an XML editor, and get the rules.

Is this an important concern for anyone? Just curious.

Cheers,
Ben

The UMA/NH Character Pack already has that information. Plugging in the data yourself is fine but we obviously would not want to post it in the Free Stuff section...

Duh... Character... Pack...?

(Checks online store...)

Woo! I had no idea such beasts existed. I look forward to checking them all out on my main HD machine at (cough) work (cough) tomorrow.

Cheers,
Ben

As a recent purchaser of HD, my HD files are pretty darn bare.

I have a few questions about the character packs in the online store:

1. When I download them, will the skills (from UMA/NH) be added to the skill list for me to choose from when making characters?

2. Is it easy to burn a copy of the files onto a CD (my HD has crashed from time to time.. it is the reason I particularly wanted a CD copy of HD)?

3. I think I know the answer to this one, but if I got villain pack, could I make modifications to the characters simply be editing the data (as if I was updating a character I had made)?

4. Is download immediate after purchase, or do we need to wait for an account to be updated?

Thanks!

Each martial arts packages in UMA is a prefab. Once you have loaded a prefab, you can simply add the contents of that prefab to a character just like you would from any prefab.

They're just files so you can burn them onto a CD like any other files.

Yes, the character files in the packs are just like any other Hero Designer character file.

Yes, the download is immediate.
