OK, so I'm reading the thread, Japanese Atlantis? (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59383), and checking out the Nat. Geog. article.

Well, the real cause of the Mystery Illness turns out to be kind of mundane; I mean, you could've gotten the same thing from a big explosion.
But think of the possibilities! This just begs for a Pulp story; change the source of the arsenic, and you're good to go.
Or, make it not arsenic, but "a compound unknown to science, with properties heretofore never seen". ;)
