Smilodon is the correct name for a Sabre Tooth Tiger.

You expected me to include the Spanish Inquisition so I did.

Spyra Gyra was a rock group in the 70s. I thought the name could apply to a gyroscope sort of power.

Star Detroyer/Dreadnought. Although they can be used as ship or ultimate weapon names they could also be used as the names of paranormals.

First, the Queen would not believe you. Second, as far as my congregation is concerned, my only vice is a little tipple before Evenson. And third, you will regret calling me fatso!

Celsius - heat/cold powers (a character name I have used several times)

Blue Angel

I built a Heat/Cold using character called Frostfire.

BlackKnight
Jun 3rd, '03, 11:21 AM
Blue Angel, as have I -- in fact, my cold/heat using character has given me the hardest time coming up with a name I really like: I don't think I'm there yet (I'm leaning towards Temper right now, but have thought about: IceFire, IceFlare, FrostFire? Thermal? Thermax? Thermic? Extreme? Temperate?).

I have a couple others from my character group that I didn't see in the last roundup list:

Shutdown
Shadow
also, from the above list:
Thermic
Temperate
IceFlare
Thermax (which is in Hero's High-Tech Enemies book)
had also considered:
Kelvin (along the lines of Rigel's Celsius)

Otherwise, that's a VERY impressive list and will be a great resource to use (I gave up on coming up with truly original names a long time ago--everything has already been used somewhere! ;-)

Novastar (flying energy projector)
Kid Justice (50s' era flying brick)
Jimmy Victory (50s' era speedster / martial artist)

Oh Death Tribble, no need to panic. A few simple steps we can take to help reach 10000

1. Get an atlas. Make a list of all countries in the world. Add Captain eg Captain Botswana, Cpt Fiji
Repeat for Major, Lady, etc - Lady Lithuania, Major Namibia
Play around with variations ie the Romanian Shield, Pakistani Justice etc

2. Duplicate all the colour-related names on the list ie Crimson Arrow, Golden Arrow, Greenish Arrow, Turquoise Arrow, Cyan Arrow

3. Name your heroes after famous places (rivers, mountains etc) although "the brook that runs behind the superstore" isn't as impressive as Danube, Thames or Mississippi

4. Raid the Silver Age Sentinels and Mutants & Masterminds boards for more names

Dynamo,

It's your old friend Death Tribble again. Guess who has been scouring for new names and now has another large bundle ?
I have plundered the Character Posting game, the images from Mutants and Masterminds fan art and the Superhero Images here.

Yup. I have about 650 at the moment which even with pruning will take us past the 3/4 mark. However do you want to hit 8,000 with this ?
I rather would as it would put us 80% of the way there.

So while I am scouring for more new names, let me know what you think.

Gimme everything you've got Thursday. I've got Friday and Saturday off this week, and I'm between cramming episodes (passed my Windows 2000 Server certification last week). I'll have the time review a list of hundreds, and I've already laid in a supply of European ales, so I won't be too harsh during the weeding-out process. ;)

Drawn by my brother as well onto a Champions character sheet. I adapted and renamed many of the ones I liked from various of the books while some names are faily generic like Speedster and Buzzard. But Maratukku is fairly unique so I kept it straight.

Just barely made 8k. A lot of death tribble's candidates got cut for lack of originality. I usually credit just about any claim of prior art or whatever, but dt outright admitted in several instances that he was drawing from previously published works that aren't part of the 5e continuity.

You don't have to have him but I thought that I would raise the question. I'd prefer to wait to include previously published characters until their existence in the 5e continuity has been established. I've already included Harby because Steve doubtless understands that if Hudson City is published w/o the Blue Moon Killer, then he's in mortal danger.

Dynamo,

Couple of things

6822 - That should have been Styx not Styz. My fault. If you want to keep it as Styz, then do so.

And Wrath is down twice at 7896 and 7897. You could make the 7897 one Wrathchild or Wrath Child. I recall a metal group of the same name.

Still have 8,000 plus with the fuzzies. And not counting the ones I added last post.

you know, I completely forgot about him, created hard air and wore a really stupid suit. Stayed for a short while, wasn't seen again until Thunderbolts, when he was interviewed in his civilian ID and the hard air he left with the Roxxon corp was used to make hard air bullets.

I read way too much.

My Windshear was our speedster, made the char before the comic did if memory serves, but can't be sure.

Here are my names:

Lobe - Big dumb Brick (Irony at its best. He wouldn't even know wht the word lobe means. Basically it is poking fun at the fact that he acts like he is missing one)

Audio - Speed and Sound manipulation (My second ever character. He had sonar, sound generation, super speed, hyper intelligence, invention, sound control. Think the flash mixed with Reed Richards)

Whisper - Same as Audio (This was Audio's alias when he went out as a vigilante. He would deaden the sound in any area he went into and sneak up on his victims, all bad guys of course, and finish them. He was very into intimidation)

Vector - Speed and Gamma Strength (This is audio after he created 5 synthazoids and used all his powers but speed and hyper intelligence to imbue them with powers of their own. He then was caught in a Gamma Radiation explosion while saving Bruce Banner from a failed experiment to fix She-Hulk. The explosion gave him a minor form of the Hulk's strength increase but increased his speed to the point where he could time travel)

Magnesia - Chemical creation/control, Magnetic Control, and Gravity manipulation. (My very first character ever. The 'Magne' is for magnetic and the Magnesia is after Milk of Magnesia, a chemical mixture. He would create explosive mixtures on the spot and encase them in mercury, then using his magnetic control, hurl the chemical grenade at an area at the same time using gravity increase to root his targets. Chemical grenades!)

Of the synthezoids I created the following name may not have been submitted:

Enormity - A female with density increase and gravity control. she could use both on others. She also had emotion control and would cause her foes's current emotions to grow enourmously (hence another meaning of enormity).

Hope you all like :D

Brother Eye: Can make you relive all your worst deeds in a matter of seconds; like the original Ghost Rider's penance start. Can also make you remember the worst injury you ever suffered, as if it was happening again. Has a mental defense based on damage shield because his mind is a sewer of malevolence. [1]

Silversmith: Has developed a strange form of silver (hey, this is the comics!) that he can control with a mechanism in his hat. His cane can transform what it touches to silver for a limited time.

Cold Drake: Reptile powers combined with the ability to breath a cone of numbing cold, superior resistance to cold and vulnerability to heat. Magical origin.

Garble: Fairly useless as a solo player, but works with the right team: he can utter a garbled stream of gibberish that captures the will and thoughts of any who can hear him; they are unable to act while so engaged, but the effect wears off within seconds after he stops.

[1] I have since learned that "Brother Eye" is also the name for at least one of the satellites from which OMAC, a DC character, drew his power. This may disqualify the name.

I've got a certification test coming up next week, so I'm cramming full time right now. Once that's done, look for another round-up, likely on 2/15 (2/13 mother's bday, 2/14 Valentine's, 2/16 13th anniversary; yup, that's the day).

Good Luck and Congratulations!

In my current superhero game, we have a guy with Ice Elemental powers (named Kelvin) and we were trying to come up with a name for this living scarecrow guy with plant powers. Unfortunately, someone suggested he was made of barley and grain. The led to the dyanmic duo of .... (wait for it)

Kelvin and Hops

At this point, we all groaned and left the room.

Rather than give you a name, let me ask for code-name suggestions... for my newest PC:

She is from Kuwait and is part of an international team sanctioned by the UN. Her powers are teleportation & healing, based on her ability to manipulate reality. She will have a very large VPP with the same special effect. Additionally she wields a scimiter (sabre?) and although her costume is that of a veiled harem-girl, she is NOT a genie! She is a mutant with the power to alter reality, so no blinking, no genie bottle or lamp, and no wishes. (I didn't make the miniature, I just chose it...)

Any idea, folks? This PC needs to be ready by next Saturday.

Hard to not define her as a genie, isn't it? I don't want to use any name that would even suggest the possibility of her being a genie, even though her powers alone make the suggestion.

She has a VPP which provides a wide range of optional powers to Teleport, Drain, Aid, Supress, & Transform. I am trying to justify some type of Force Field too, as well as Images & Mental Illusions, but I'm still stumped on that as of this posting.

The premise/special effect is that she can alter reality with a thought. But so far her mutant-based powers are limited to objects and people (i.e. she cannot alter time of events or do a Change Environment. The VPP has no skill roll, nor does it take time to alter her powers, which makes it all come back to the genie-type powers. No, she does not make gestures like crossing her arms and blinking.

As far as combat goes, she is a support character. I'm not even sure if I can keep the blade, pointwise.

I tried using an English-to-Arabic translator, but it only translates words to the Arabic alphabet so that I cannot read it. (Would be nice if there were an English-to-Arabic translator that used the English alphabet on both ends...)

Anyway, thank you for your assistance, Dynamo!

Nothing. And the powers don't merely suggest it, but rather scream it.

Were I you, I would invent a background story that contains material that suggests a name relevant to her personality or history while refuting everything about her appearance and powers. Let everyone else wonder why she calls herself Black Sky, Lady of Brass (though that one's drawn from D&D efreeti), or Burning Sunset.

If you look in the Superhero Images thread, you can even see the pic I did for Pelage. Somewhere in pages 12-14 or so. not sure exactly, but I could find it again, if needed.

Check the prior page for the most recent compilation. You'll know you found it when you see an extremely loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong post. :D

Currently at #8435, not counting DT's latest suggestions or the "Furry" names.

Awright, more names! You'll have to wait 'til June for the next roundup though. This week, I'm taking my last certification test for an MCSE; next week, I'm moving; the following week, I'm starting on the final push for a CCNA certification, but I should have the mental space, with everything else out of the way, to do a roundup.

When I posted the last roundup, I ran into server errors complaining of overflow. I sent Ben a message about it but never heard back, and I still can't edit the monster. So I'll be posting roundups in smaller hunks.

Not only will I split the main list into two separate posts, but I'll also split the Fuzzies into a separate post as an appendix, which suggests additional appendices, such as Team Names and Silly Names.

Warm up your keyboard, death tribble. You know you want to resubmit all those names I hated.

What about putting the names in a separate file and attaching that to a post. Sure, it lacks the visceral thrill of seeing all those names together, but it might be a way around this problem.

What about putting the names in a separate file and attaching that to a post. Sure, it lacks the visceral thrill of seeing all those names together, but it might be a way around this problem.I think I'll do it both ways, two posts for the main list and one each for the appendices so people can read them directly in the boards, and one attached file with the whole shebang. My original objection to posting an attached text file has disappeared now that we have better attachment management features. I can now delete the old version of the file when I upload a new one.

I think I may now hold the record for longest post. Anyone else manage to hurt the server?

Here are some names that I recall from my long-lost Champions-playing days.

Black Lotus
Bugbear
Brahminy Kite
Colonel Carnage
The Green Ninja
Hussar
The Soulfire Samurai
Staver
Telekon
Thunderchild

Brahminy kite is a species of bird-or-prey (the character was a flying move-through specialist). The Green Ninja was an escaped sprite from a low-tech video game. Staer was a martial artist, Telekon a telekinetic, Colonel Carnage a battlesuit character with a large firearms VPP.

Dynamo,

There are a number of new products coming up. Galactic Champions and Arcane Adversaries being two which have a tentative relationship to Champions itself.
While a new version of say the killer robot that we all know and love would be a silly thing to include what about the other newer names from Galactic Champions ?
And what about the magical baddies from Arcane Adversaries and the Mystical World ?
And before it hits the stores, Dark Champions ?
So oh keeper of the lists what say you ?

So oh keeper of the lists what say you?Let's tentatively plan to include the new names. I'm planning to buy these books as soon as I can get my grubby mitts on them, so you won't have to wait long for a judgement call.

Well anything like a proper name like the Vandaleurs for example I won't include. Or Defender 3000 or Mechanon 3000.

Anything else goes in.

Dynamo
May 26th, '04, 12:02 PM
Ordinarily, proper names are out, but since costumed supers published as part of the 5e Hero Universe automatically get the nod, there may be some exceptions amongst the Vandaleurs.

A few from the campaign I was recently playing in:

Jumpstart
The Sanity Assassin - a mentalist created to hunt other mentalists
Rainman
Azaroth - interesting variant spelling on existing name
Red Raptor - old Champions villain I don't see on the list

Alien hero/villain names
(I'm not really clear on your guidelines here: I would hope that you make a distinction between fantasy-sounding nonsense names and those with an alien bent, since other-dimensional and alien encounters are such a staple of comic book universes. I would also hope that a name doesn't have to have 30 apostrophes to be "alien". If they don't fit, will there be a separate alien name list):

Razzia (actually a team, but rolls off the tongue nicely as a single entity's name)
Korvak

Other stuff
- is Annihilus an existing villain in Marvel or DC? It's a great name variant that isn't present.
- how did 7218 - Sk8r Boi get past the silly filter. Avril Lavigne fan? :)

Thanks so much for your effort in this.

Marvel. Annihilus is an inhabitant of an alternate dimension called the Negative Zone, to which the Fantastic Four journey from time to time.

Interesting trivia point here. The exact same spelling also means Poison in French.
Slightly different pronunciation (pwa-Zan for poison vs. pwa-san for fish, IIRC); it's been a lotta years since high-school French.

I remember because our teacher made a point of telling us how Parisians would make fun of Americans who thought they knew French but didn't pronounce things correctly.

The low-powered team of high-school heroes Killer Rabbit and the Safety Leech.
Killer Rabbit--Desiree Delisandra Trudeau, athletic high-school princess with superleap and 1 pip of HKA. (She's got very long, sharp fingernails.) She's secretly in love with her partner and friend Bernie, and none of her 'popular' friends can understand why she lets such a loser hang out with her.
Safety Leech--Bernie Kuppleman, bright, nerdy, bespectacled teenaged boy with supress vs kinetic energy. He's in love with Desiree, but doesn't think she'd ever consider him as more than a friend. Not afraid to wade into the middle of a nasty accident in order to 'leech' the dangerous kinetic energies down to 'safe' levels.

Kid Charlemagne--presence attacks and a fierce HTH combatant. Natural tactician...for all that she's only about 14 years old.

Lady Gray--Miriam Blakely, strong willed lady detective with telekinesis and teleport customised as shadow manipulation

Overall, pretty good. Very comprehensive. Some names are poor and some are good. The ones with the long explanations seem to be really poor choices.

Villian: Who are you hero?

Hero: I am Oberon, you know from medieval folklore: king of the fairies and husband of Titania.

Villian: (laughing histerically) Who? Where's your wife? What is super power? Make your enemy fall out laughing???

Two of the three detractors left no comment, but one seems to be making a positive comment (bad grammar and spelling, so hard to tell). Maybe the interface was a little much for him.

It’s spelled Pheidippides.
