View Full Version : La Jetee--a different sort of PA movie

I recently watched a film called La Jetee the film that 12 Monkeys must be loosely based on...

It's pretty interesting, but different from anything I've ever seen. It's a "photo roman" (a series of black and white still images) with the narrative line being carried through a voice over. I'd guess it's about half an hour long.

La Jetee is also a distant cousin of the Christopher Reeves film Somewhere In Time. Both use the device that you can time travel if you have an intense enough obsession with something in the past.

I was able to get it via Netflix in a Criterion Collection edition with another film from the Director, Chris Marker, called Sans Soliel (apparently this translates from the French as sunless).

Has anyone seen this... or run a PA game that focuses on going back to before the apocalypse to try to repair things?

I haven't seen that one, but you might also enjoy a Japanese film called "The Returner" for that concept.

I've seen most of La Jetee quite some time back.

As for the 'traveling back to stop the apocalypse' concept...I
seem to recall an Odessey 5 thread here in the Other Genres forum
awhile back <engages search mode>.....Hmmmm. I'm not finding
it. It might not have made it over from the 'old boards'. I've only
seen an hour of the series (Odessey 5) but that might be a source
for a similar campaign. The basic plotline and details are available
here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odyssey_5

The full series (which was only one season) is available via Netflix.
The show is also currently running on Friday nights on the SciFi
channel here in the US. As mentioned above, I've only seen an hour
of it so far so I can not give a reasonable 'full review/endorsement'.

I saw it ages ago, and am pretty sure that 12 Monkeys was indeed based on it,

Decided to watch Odyssey 5 and it's an interesting concept, but does seem to suffer from some spotty writing/directing choices as you get further into the series.

I turned to my wife last night and said, "It's almost like someone created a game and decided to turn it into a show." Which, you know, could work, if you rewrote the dialogue some... :hush:

But, it's worth seeing if you're looking for ideas for a different sort of PA game.
