View Full Version : D&D not selling well here

My local game store owner is not a happy camper. He has two big displays of the new D&D 3.5 book (50 copies of each at least), and they don't look like they are moving very well. It looks like that Media Play and Barnes & Noble have under cut his prices.

How is D&D 3.5 selling elsewhere?

Hi Mike: I'm not sure how it is doing at my FLGS but I know most of my friends are getting the books at Wallmart online. Their price is rumored to be VERY VERY low...less than $18 a book. There is a thread about Wallmart somewhere around here...

Walmart online costs for all three books is $62.48 plus $3.00 s/h (which might vary a bit depending on shipping). So buy all three for just about the price of two and screw your FLGS by supporting the corporations!

Personally, I am torn. I LOVE a deal, especially with a game system I don't plan on playing all that much but my friends run the FLGS...

I was seduced by the deal - and delivery. Got mine from amazon. I make it a point to get my hero stuff from my FLGS.

almost everyone i know of got theirs online, the double whammy of cheaper and released before the deadline was a killer. If wotc did not intend for this to be an all out assault on the FLGS, then they are still in the realm of "endangerment."

Me, since i had already decided I was not gonna buy them and intend to use the SRD for my curiosity fulfillment, I found i was not tempted in the least.

Sales figures online are good iirc, with Amazon listing them in their top 20 (filling 3 f the 20 slots) for current sales or some such.

My FLGS sold out of Player's Handbooks the first day he had them. (I was partly responsible buying four copies myself...one for me and one for each of my players.)

Since my FLGS sold them to me for 20 bucks a pop, I bought them from them. $60 + sales tax was a good enough deal.

The PHB is selling better than the other books, but Mark's got a bit of interest in all of them. But, he discounts things pretty heavily, for me at least.

Since all three were released at the same time, people want to get all three. So, they look for the best deal possible.

That's Walmart or Amazon. Most GS operators don't like to discount products, even when it would be feasible to do so, and hence, lose out on sales to the places that do.

70 with tax/shipping vs 90 + tax. Hmmm.

Keep in mind that this comment is directed toward WotC, not your local FLGS...

HA-HA!

Actually, I was rather on-the-fence about the whole thing. On the one hand, you'd like to see rejuvenated interest in RPGs in a period where even the WotC Stores have dropped tons of their RPG stuff. On the other hand, printing a deficient book with the knowledge that two years later you'll revise the system, is pretty sneaky.

So I'm caught between cheering and jeering them. In the end, I listened to the other players in my group when they said they weren't buying it and decided the boycot was the best move. It's unfortunate that this hurts the FLGS so much.

An FLGS needs to be in touch with the pulse of its clientele. If your FLGS overordered, either the clientele talked about buying it and then didnt when they had it in thier hands and realized its almost the same, or the FLGS wasnt paying attention to the prevailing moods.

As an FYI, the discounted pricing on the books hurts WotC in no way whatsoever. Walmart and Amazon still pay the same price that the FLGS does to get the unit, and it is this price that the WotC's cut comes from. You could offer the book for $5 a piece and it wouldn't hurt WotC at all.

Sorry if this isn't what you were trying to get at.

Edit: Just bought the PHB and DMG at Amazon.com. I don't plan on playing this game but my friends might invite me to one - those who do not know the power of Hero that is... ;)

I had an order at walmart.com, but canceled it...

Not to buy it from a FLGS but to get it from a local "chain" called "Hastings". They had all three new books for $14.98 each. Ya can't beat that.

Converted one, working on a second. Just that it is usually a game of a friend of a friend I go to, so I needta play what they're running. ;)

But working on it.

Had a great moment in my FLGS. I don't remember what I was doing but one of your 'typical gamers' just came up to me and said to me "3rd Edition Sucks!"

I said, "What?" as I was surprised at this stranger addressing me.

"Third Edition sucks!, 3.5 sucks, all those d20 systems suck."

I just grinned wide, "That's why I play Hero," and walked away.
