I've done something like this before, but I'm curious agian. When you folks make a hero who's basically a Weapon Master Archetype, what's your poison? Which weapon is your favorite one for a character to use and master?

Hmm, the only weapon master I have ever made used guns so that's what I voted on, as far as a favorite type of weapon for a weapon master, i would actually be willing to go with swords, namely the whole swashbuckler deal rapier and main-gauche.
By the way Mega, you only need by two weapon fighting and ambidex once for it to apply to all foru arms :D

I'm pretty much a "theme of the moment" kinda guy. In other words, it depends on what I'm in the mood for, or what the game calls for, or what the character ends up telling me (yes, my characters talk to me...sort of). I don't have a favorite that I use more than any other. Previous weapons masters have used guns, bows, staves, swords, and hammers, and chain.
My favorite character, though, was a sword wielder. He had a handgun as a backup weapon, but the sword was the thing.

The various weapon's masters that I've played have used:
Energy Sword
Guns
Triple Irons
Anything Sharp
Explosives
A giant Scalpel
Automobiles (oh wait, that's just for the brick vs. martial artist)
I'm sure I'm blanking on some.

Jubei was the only weapons-master I've ever created and his weapon of choice was the katana, of course. The downfall of a sword-master is you can't help but be deadly when you master a killing weapon.
His sword wasn't magical or anything. He just had a real sword that he was really good with. It made it interesting when he was fighting super-powered bad-guys.

Bow of the Galadhrim and a pair of long-handled woodland knives, and enough DEX and COM to cause pandemic swoonage.

I don't really have a favorite, though I guess if I had to pick Two gun fighting is just cool...I would probibly make up a "Throw master" Lin kue type the next time I create a character though.....

Just had to say, a 972 pt character SHOULD terrify your team. Good gods of dice!! He's as big as Mechanon and Dr. Destroyer. I feel for that group having ex-cia op's like this. OF course, the PCs could be 2K pts, so who knows. To each their own. :p

Martial Artist / Gadgeteer / Weapon's Master: Floyd "Barman" Hooker. Skinny potbellied 182 year old bartender alchemist, can turn anything found in a bar into a deadly weapon. Brewed the Eternal Red Eye that created the Rough Mechanicals. Shouldn't have mixed in those funny mushrooms from the meteor crater in the Indian burial grounds.

For a full-blown weaponmaster its got to be swords. Especially a samurai with two blades, although a fencer with a rapier or Aragorn with his longsword... they're all good.

I happen to think a real weaponmaster wouldn't know just one weapon. If you told a samurai to only concentrate on the katana, he'd probably give you a wild-eyed stare...or a glaring one. Weapons all have their place for different situations. Just as modern martial artists are discovering through reality fights that there is no one ultimate style, I think it would be foolhardy for a weaponmaster to concentrate totally on one weapon.
He may be better at some weapons than others having focused on their usage or just having a natural aptitude with one. Take Miyamoto Musashi who defeated Sasaki Kojiro with a wooden stick he found. Musashi excelled at the sword, but he defeated Japan's second greatest swordsman with a club (utlizing sword techniques of course but if you've ever practiced with a metal blade and a bokken or suburi, you know how differnt they can be). However, Musashi's one defeat came at the hands of Muso Gonnosuke who knew both the bo staff as well as the jo staff (and defeated Musashi with the Jo Staff). Or in fiction, remember how Quigley (Tom Selleck's character from Quigley Down Under) defeated the villain at the end with a pistol even though he was mostly shown as being a sniper ("I didn't say I couldn't use a pistol, I just don't like them").
That being said, I think having a certain focus on a weapon or two is nice. I'm currently writing up a character (once I finish digesting The Ultimate Martial Artist) that has practiced mostly Chinese weapons, including the two handed tai chi sword, the bandit sword/chai-dao, whip chain and twin broadswords. His favorite however will either be the bo-staff or the bandit sword. There's something regal about staff's...an elegance of being something extremely simple.

What's the scholarly concensus on Musashi's record? I was under the impression that he was never defeated.

Musashi's history is a bit cloudy, and some scholars even question whether he existed or was actually more than one man that got combined into one extraordinary person. Sort of like how Robin Hood was probably a real person (or more than one person) but history has clouded the exact origins.
By some sources only one recorded defeat by the aforementioned Muso Gonnosuke tarnishes Musashi's record. Actually in their first encounter, Musashi defeated Muso when the latter was armed with a bo staff, and uncharacteristically spared his life (apparently Musashi was only using a very small branch he was whittling away with when Gonnosuke challenged Musashi). The next time they fought, Muso used the short staff and defeated Musashi.
According to one story I saw, Musashi said he could have defeated Muso, but the only way to have done so would have been to kill him, which he was loathe to do seeing how skilled Muso was. So he "allowed" Muso to win. Whether that's Musashi's ego talking or not is up to debate.
There's a good write up of all this here (http://www.koryubooks.com/library/wmuromoto1.html)

I had to go with the sword. As the poll said, you can't go wrong with a classic.
Just look at some of the weaponmasters from literature and movies/TV.....
Elric
Conan
Dar, the Beastmaster (Marc Singer, not the TV version or the later movies)
Rutger Hauer's characters from Ladyhawke and Blind Fury
(I know there are others, but it's early and the caffiene hasn't soaked into my brain yet)

I like the staff. You can all kinds of neat "other" effects without losing the essence of the weapon:
Superleap: polevaulting
Martial Maneuvers: tripping is martial throw, being choked with a staff is brutal, disarm with stretching
Stretching: Staves are usually an extra six feet or so...
Hand to Hand attack is obvious
Missle deflection and reflection: at least blocking arrows
Something I rarely see is a "ninja" archer. Archers always seem to have a dozen or more "trick" arrows, but you rarely see an archer who has just normal arrows, great stealth, and some effects that come from his/her incredible aim.

Usually ninja boy's have swords and no arrows.
:)
Besides being a ninja is more than mastering a sword or a bow just like being a samurai, or Robin Hood is about being more than Master of th Katana or the Bow
"Another urban myth dispelled, ninja's don't bounce"-the Tick
and I love the concept of "The Shoveler"
"....and im good at Shoveling"-The Shoveler
besides you need Unarmed,
"my fists are registered as deadly weapons"-They Call Me Bruce
Sheilds? Sheilds are good too.
Can I go with Jack of All Trades, Master of None?
:)

You are quite right about the staff. In fact, if the poll had had the ability to chose a second preference, staff would have been it.
As it was, I chose bow, and the reason for this is named "Green Arrow". In particular, I was thinking about the period in the late '80s/early '90s when he ditched the trick arrows and concentrated entirely on his skills. _That_ was a weapons master.
Of course, he also used staff and unarmed martial arts, and I think once he might have even picked up an Uzi... (Black Canary certainly did in the same fight.) All of this is entirely normal for a well rounded combatant.
Not all weapons masters are necessarily well rounded combatants, of course, but the really cool ones are...

Actually I think mono-weapon masters are cooler precisely because they're less realistic. Real life isn't cool. It's dirty and smelly.

Yes, the staff was a Robin Hood thing. On occasion I think he might have actually used his bow as a staff. It wouldn't be good for it, but at close quarters...
The Uzi, if it happened, was during a situation where a lot of "stuff" was flying around. In other words, it was a "found" weapon.
If I was building a skill-based, normal bashing Green Arrow, I might be tempted to give him a weapons pool, on the understanding that it would be almost always assigned to his bow, but with an option for other gear. Allowing characters to use found weapons is fine up to a point, but charging them a few points for the privilege is better... As long as it doesn't encourage them to do it all the time, of course.
The whole point of the skills based "back to basics" Green Arrow was that he became more of a "realistic" street level character, who didn't use cinematic trick arrows and stuff. As such, his use of staff and martial arts was entirely reasonable, as was the Uzi bit, in context.
If I was going to play a street level character, GA would be one of the models I would consider. It would certainly be a nice change from Batman clones, not to mention ugly and stupid gun-freak Punisher clones. Black Canary is pretty cool too. (So is the Question.)
I'm no great fan of sword-guys, particularly samurai sword-guys or ninja wannabes. Yuck. Someone else can have that particular archetype, as far as I'm concerned.

Alan
I respectfully disagree. When done right the samurai swordpeople and the ninjas can be excellent characters.
Some examples of this from comicbooks: Katana of the Outsiders. Snake Eyes and Stormshadow from the old GI Joe comicbook.

A "Tron" deadly disc? To those who think this is ludicrous, I can only refer to, uh, Frizbee was it (I can't recall how she spelled her nom de crime)? She was a 2nd (?) Ed character and not exactly the highpoint of interesting character design. IIRC, one slot for a Physical EB, one for an Energy EB, both based on her throwing discs.
Green Arrow using an uzi? Makes perfect sense. He was recently described as being able to nock 29 arrows a minute (always take this sort of thing with a pinch of salt mind you) ie almost exactly right for SPD 6! Anyway think how much higher the rate of fire is with a fully automatic weapon. No matter how good an archer you are, the uzi has a better rate of fire, can do Autofire tricks and is possibly more intimidating to a thug.

Well, Xena used a Chakram, which is essentially a kind of sharp-edged Frisbee, and I think the discus was originally a weapon, not just an Olympic sports item.

The Shadow is more or less Golden Age. There were a bunch of Golden Age gunwielders: Batman(!), the Phantom, the Crimson Avenger... Some of them later gave them up, but still...
I have a lot fewer problems with these characters than with the Punisher types. I'm not sure why - it's probably just the attitude. Or maybe it's the attitude of the players that play them.
Hmm, yeah, that's it. Anyone who plays a Shadow clone is someone who knows who the Shadow is. Anyone who plays a Punisher clone thinks that Uzis are cool. There is a difference. One is a person of education, culture and refinement. The other isn't.
And yes, incidentally, I did collect the DC modern-day Shadow series in the 80's. Very cool stuff, indeed, although it went a bit strange at the end. Anyway, it was still the Shadow, so his weaponry didn't matter. :)
Besides, the Shadow is much, much more than "just" a weapons master.

I've never read GI Joe. Katana never greatly impressed me.

I'll tell you who else is cool - Rose Tattoo, from Stormwatch. Mainly because she never speaks.
But at the very apex of the pyramid of coolness is Joe Pineapples from the ABC Warriors.

Double sticks (escrima/kali) or a staff may seem boring at first, but check out some old Jet Li flicks and you'll get a feel for how kewl a charector can be with just a simple stick...

Speaking of Sampson, do you believe he actually was super strong or just a Super fighter? The only time when he seems to have Super Strength is when he kills himself with the temple falling down.

I believe he was an inspired and tenacious warrior.
The account of him pulling down the pagan temple could be interpreted as super-strength from a gamer-esque perspective, though the chassidut suggests it was a subtle miracle: he pulled and God knocked it over for him.
A martial artist... definately.

Well I've only seen one once, but judging from what it looked like, I'd say maybe 1d6 HKA plus strength bonuses. Definetly didn't look as though it would be good for a long range attack though.

1d6 KA would be reasonable. I think it would have reduced penetration, however.

Sticks have a lot of potential as a superhero weapon cause none of the 'big names' use them. Well, okay, there's Daredevil but I don't really associate him with his club that strongly. Not in the way that Cap and the shield go together or Green Arrow and the bow.
But how do you make a staff/sticks competitive in a typical superhero game? Green Arrow really needs his magic arrows to stay with the heavy hitters. But it seems conceptually inappropriate to have a normal staff doing 12d6.

Not really...
Your typical quarterstaff is basicly built as +4 HA and 1" of stretching, OAF.
Give the character 20 STR and you've got 8d6 HA pretty easily.
Add MA with a "stick" WF, and you've got 10d6HA.
Now buy 2 DC's. 12d6 HA w/ sticks and it's appropriate and in character.
Think about DareDevil's mentor, "Stick". Even as an old man, he could still give DD a good pummeling with that staff of his.

First of all I voted for "Bow"
Second,
On staffs I agree with the above, except I would not even add the DC's as 10 DC is a good attack in my games...

I don't know that it would help bone against bronze age and early iron age armors, but it would against soft leather, hides, and padded type armor.

I dunno, the one time I actually saw the jawbone of an ass it looked like a fairly vicious weapon of opportunity. I can totally belive that a really strong somebody could do some damage with it.

I don't doubt for a minute its lethal.
I just question how effective a bone weapon would be against a bronze cuiriass.

Then end that had the teeth on it looked pretty darn pointy and nasty to me. Besides, any weapon can be effective if you have enough strength behind it. Assuming that Samson was both super strong and super skilled at fighting, it's not much of a stretch.

pretty darn effective IMHO if the attacker were to use a Braveheart-Deer-Antler-in-between-the-armor-plating maneuver.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the whip yet!
I definitely have to agree with the tendency to say it's a mood thing. Archers are some of my favorites from wayback, but i've always loved the sheild possibilities. The staff is a personal inspiration, and you can't beat a good mace. (Hogunn's mace is the coolest ever!) Also, I've tried to make the Tron discs multiple times but never been quite satisfied. I haven't tried in 5th yet, maybe it's time to take another look. About the only one i'm never in the mood for is guns. Can't stand guntoting heroes. There are rare exceptions, but as a rule, none.
That all being said, if I had to choose just one of those catagories, it's the non-weapon. In my mind, no one in comic books says Weapon Master quite like Bullseye. And in the movies, Jackie Chans 'improvised' fight scenes are always the most exciting!
'Nuff said.
