Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of writing up a Rune mage for a game my friend is starting.

I got the idea for a runic necklace that would protect the wearer from harm, but after several uses it would shatter.

here is my write up so far, let me know what you think.
or if you have any ideas for cool runic spells

Necklace of Warding: (Total: 25 Active Cost, 7 Real Cost) Aid Warding Armor 1d6 (standard effect: 3 points), 64 Charges (Recovers Under Limited Circumstances; +1/2), Trigger (Activating the Trigger is an Action that takes no time, Trigger resets automatically, immediately after it activates; Any Damage; +1) (25 Active Points); Instant fade Rate* (-1), IAF Expendable (Difficult to obtain new Focus; Runic Sydgil Carved out of Yew; -3/4), Spell (-1/2), Requires A Skill Roll (only to make; -1/2), Costs Endurance (-1/2) (Real Cost: 6) plus Force Wall () (0 Active Points); Restricted Shape (body; -1/4) (Real Cost: 1)

*a custom modifier to help with some of the handwavium, (i think its pretty self explanatory)

In my mind the aid would keep going off (instantly) until the force wall had enough PD to block the attack, or it runs out of charges. I then pay 2 END for every charge it had to use.

let me know if im just crazy and this doesn't work at all

Thanks guys

You might find this resource useful: Runecrafting (http://www.killershrike.com/FantasyHERO/HighFantasyHERO/MagicSystems/runecrafting.aspx)

You also could take a look at FHG2, which has runic magic therein.

As for the construction of the item, I do have a couple of concerns:

1) The Force Wall seems to serve no purpose whatsoever; every attack would blow through it without even being slowed down.

2) Rather than Aid with "Instant Fade Rate," you might try Succor, which is basically (if not literally) the same thing. Better yet, just +1PD/+1ED Armor with all the Limitations.

3) The Spell and RSR Limitations would tend to indicate that only a magician can use the item. If this was intentional, then fine; just so you're aware of it.

Bob,

I was envisioning it working as such (if this isn't how it works and i'm just crazy please let me know) :

1) I'm hit with an attack, for this lets say 5d6 HA and for easy of math let use standard effect

2) the aid goes off 5 times (once for each body of the attack)

3) the force wall is now 5pd, the attack hits it and doesn't break through

4) I dont take any damage, but I lose 10 end (2 end per charge * 5 charges)

5) the Force wall instantly drains back down to 0/0 after the attack

If my logic/reason/write up is flawed please let me know

thanks for the quick responses

I think that's quite a bit flawed, based on:

2) The Aid would only go off once. If you want it to be able to go off more than once in a Phase, buy Autofire (with a Maximum Of One Shot Per BODY In Triggering Attack Limitation for, say, -1/2).

5) I have serious doubts about the technical legality of spending 1 point to buy a Power at 0 effect just so you can Aid it.

thanks for your feedback bob

I added the autofire to the aid.

as for the 1pt power at 0, i'll leave that for my GM to decide ;)

with an luck (and enough bribes) he will allow it

if not, ill go with the +1/+1 armor idea

Nightlord256,

I'd buy it as straight BODY with a Never Recovers (-2) Limitation on it (plus IAF: necklace, and the other applicable Limitations). When the wearer gets hurt, the necklace BODY goes down.

In Hero System, BODY is more long-term damage and STUN is more level of consciousness/awareness. Does the neckace stop STUN too? If so, I'd buy STUN the same way, with 3x as much STUN as BODY.

Much simpler.
