Hello all,

I was wondering if any of you knew of a random weather generator, preferably a software version?

Other than mother nature? ;)

There's a few for Harn and Rolemaster out there, I'll see if I can find the links again.

I've never been too impressed with the weather charts I've seen around. They tend to be set up for a specific place (ie don't port well into other game settings), they rarely take precipitation into account (and if they do it's only in the most generic terms), and they almost never take unusual weather into account (tornadoes, heat waves, ice storms).

The best I've ever seen, IMO, was in the 1st ed AD&D's Wilderness Survival Guide. And I've never seen a software version of that, as useful as it would be (the WSG tables are kind of clunky to use on the fly).

I've found the charts in the Gamemaster Law (for Rolemaster) book to be handy, but very trended towards only a very wet and cool climate...even with the modifiers they list.

I have a random names generator program that I built from the old Judges' Guild Treasury of Archaic Names.

It would only take me a couple of hours to add weather to it if I had tables to put in my database.

The only drawback is, it's a VB.NET program; you'd need to be running something with the .NET Framework installed to be able to use it.

Why would you want a random weather generator? Wouldn't you want to specify whether you generate a tornado or a gentle breeze? ;)

hehe, most of the time I just like having about a months worth of weather generated for atmosphere. If I have it randomly generated I can fixate on other aspects.

But when I want specific weather I just handwavium and voila.

Hands down: Weather Master by Milieu Simulations. However, this is a moot point as they no longer produce it. Maybe if you can find a download somewhere (heck, I could send it to you) and then get a key generated so you can actually use it... there is that issue...

That's actually the one I was originally searching for. :(

Well phooey... sorry to remind you of that!

There is one by FaenWorks that seems pretty good but isn't as detailed as WeatherMaster and can only handle one moon... but it seems good from the demo I have used!

Does anyone else out there know of how to get a key for the Weathermaster? Another GM friend of mine was very interested in it and now I feel bad I suggested it to him...

You could use current weather forecasts for a geographically appropriate region. Nothing's more random than weather, and this Internet thing seems to have lots of weather forecasts on it.

(looks around)

And your point at pointing out the obvious is?

I do have to say I would be interested in a random weather generator. Even if I never use it ina game it would be fun to fiddle with.
