View Full Version : Would DoJ consider this...?

Steve,

I was over at the Guardians of Order page (wanting to find out if d20 Mecha is ever going to be coming out), and noticed that they have something that seemed kinda interesting. They call it "Magnum Opus". Basically, they use their contacts in printing and distribution to help others publish role playing books with a license from them (I think I am getting that right). The publication is under the name of Magnum Opus (which means 'great work' or something like that), and not GoO. GoO gets a good chunk of change for the use of their contacts, small independents get their book published, and more materials are put out using tri stat or GoO's variation on d20 (with a licensing fee in addition to the share of the profits GoO gets).

Seems like the best alternative to OGL (many of the benefits that people want as for more product, while DoJ keeps control and a share of the profits). It also can create a potential revenue stream using an existing asset (DoJ's contacts within the industry).

Any thoughts?? :)

My thoughts are: no, we're not going to do that.

If someone is interested in licensing the HERO System, we have information about that on our "Policies" page. I think the terms are quite reasonable in all respects. Given that to date, despite numerous inquiries, only one person (Lisa Hartjes) has actually contacted us, expressed interest, signed a contract, and produced a licensed product, I frankly don't see that there's a lot of need for anything more (even if we were inclined to provide it).

Furthermore, before anyone proceeds very far with any such inquiries, I usually advise them to contact Lisa to get an idea of what her sales have been like. It always helps to have all the data. You, and others who support this whole "OGL" concept and things like it, seem to assume there's this vast audience for Hero products, both in general and from third party producers in particular. IMO, that's not the case...

...but if someone wants to try, is willing to meet our terms, and can actually produce a product we can approve, I think we're pretty easy to work with.

Steve,

My "support" for OGL is based upon me as a customer, and not from any business perspective. I think it would be neat for Hero to be OGL because of the possibility of more books. I did express my belief that it probably would not work business wise.

Thank you for your speedy reply...:)
