Drakine: There will be only one

Hi guys
i'm reading about drakine on TA book, and jumped in my mind something about their children:

book say, drakira (drakine female) give birth only ONE children at all, because they die in the process or otherwise are soo painfull they decide not give birth again

so, every COUPLE of drakine give birth to ONE drakine only. This mean... every generation, drakine population will be cut in half...
how can be this? i mean, a race condemned to desappear just because they don't get (too much) children
even assuming a single drakoso (drakine male) will mate with several drakira (drakine female), population will reduce every generation.
this sound really really really ugly to me, and really unrealistic

ok, it's a fantasy setting, but is not DnD: best part of TA is the complete coherence and realism, and this is a big error to me XD

so... what do you think about it?
i'm thinking about changing it on "female give birth only ONCE to NO MORE THAN 2 drakine"

Poorly educated, lower income Drakine females have large numbers of children, often by several fathers. It's only the well off, college educated Drakine couples that stop after one child. The result is that Drakine, as a race, become less intelligent every year. Also, for some reason, each generation becomes more interested in chariot races and arena wrestling.

Ah-ha! For a minute there I thought you were talking about Americans and then I saw the Chariot Races and said, oh, well, he's obviously talking about some foreign country cuz we don't have chariots.

It says most, not all. I would imagine at least enough give birth to either multiple children or for some reason have more than one child.

And yes, in the setting the Drakine population is definitely in decline from its hey-day at the top of the chain.

btw, "in decline" is slightly different than "doomed to halve every generation" :)

in my races revision i stated "(most) drakira give birth one time only to no more than 2 child", so drakine population is still in decline, but slower than "one child only" thing :D

Actually, it is the Drakine that are responsible for all those cursed Girdles of Masculinity/Femininity. It's a desperate attempt to prevent the rapid decline of their race.
