View Full Version : Haymaker! Wants You!

Greetings, Herophiles!
I am the new coordinator of Haymaker!, an Amateur Press Association magazine (APAzine) supporting the Hero System, and we're looking for a few good writers to join us.
Haymaker! has been around since 1992 and is published as a PDF on a quarterly basis. As an APAzine, it is distributed only among contributors (who currently number around 20, though the number that contribute to any given issue is often less than that). Our contributors include Dave Mattingly, Mike Surbrook, and Bob Greenwade, all of whom I'm sure you know from Digital Hero and other Hero Games publications.
Haymaker! is not available by subscription or sale to the general public, so you don’t get paid to contribute. However, authors in Haymaker! retain full rights to their own work (at least, until they later decide to sell their work). For contributors, this APAzine can be both a wealth of gaming material and an excellent source of feedback from other writers.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Or, you can check out our website* (www.haymaker.org), look at our Contributor's Guidelines (http://www.haymaker.org/files/guidelines.pdf), or even email me directly (RayL@haymaker.org).
*We are in the midst of a major update to the website, so please excuse the parts still under construction.
PS: Thank you to Darren for allowing me to post this on the Hero boards.
PPS: There is a matching thread on the Hero System Discussion forum. I will be checking both threads, so post to either one.

If the email to rayl@haymaker.org bounces, it may be due to maintenance on the server. If so, just send me a PM. Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience.

I've contributed to Haymaker in the past and would be interested in doing so in the future, but I'm unclear on the provenance. It was my understanding that at some point DOJ had purchased some or all of the Haymaker content...or perhaps it was the HERO Plus spin off...
You say we retain full rights...but what if I wanted to publish a 5th edition version of something I previously published in an older version of Haymaker? Like say Demon Hunter FBI?

I don't think DOJ purchased any Haymaker! content (though of course someone can correct me if I'm wrong). If anything, it may have been EZ Hero content (though of course, some of that may have appeared earlier in Haymaker!, and if so, then DOJ might own that specific content).

Yeah, that was it. EZ HERO.

Excuse me if I'm missing something, but this seems to me like a step up from a writing group. Contributors are the only ones who can read the items and then they provide feedback to the other contributors. The only difference is that a coordinator is putting together all the submissions into one E-zine/file. Each contributor agrees to submit something at least (4 pages) every other issue.
I like the idea. I just want to make sure I'm understanding it correctly. Is there more that I'm missing?

From what I've seen about APAs in general and Haymaker! specifically, you'd be perfectly free to sell "Demon Hunter FBI" even after it appeared in Haymaker! since you still own all rights to it. You're not publicly distributing the article; effectively it's no different than if you let your friends read the article before submitting it for publication.
If anything, it may have been EZ Hero content (though of course, some of that may have appeared earlier in Haymaker!, and if so, then DOJ might own that specific content).
I can't definitively say about the EZ Hero content, but I know my articles that appeared in Digital Hero (the Bayside Blimp and the Principality of Sealand) both appeared beforehand in Haymaker! so I could get feedback before submitting them "for real." And now DOJ owns that specific content, but not other writers' content that appeared in that same issue of Haymaker!

Yes, you're understanding it correctly.
I should note that contributors don't all comment on all other contributors' work, but you'll typically get feedback from some contributors. And the feedback I've gotten in the past has been very helpful.

The complicating factor here in my case is they were articles that were published first in Haymaker, then again in EZ HERO, which DOJ later acquired the rights to.

I'm not sure they did acquire the rights to EZ Hero. They might have simply made an agreement with Dave Mattingly to stop making EZ Hero and start editing Digital Hero.

No, I remember agreeing to something and getting a small check or two. I didn't really pay much attention at the time (I didn't even bother to cash the check). Of the two, I redid Project: PREDATOR in 5th edition terms for Digital HERO in issue 23, so thats off my todo list. I always intended to redo DH FBI in 5th edition terms, started work on it at one point in fact, but it just got continually back burner-ed and I'm kind of feeling that old "man I wish I hadda done that" thing.
I don't really care per se; basically there was material that I would be interested in expounding upon further if it wouldn't violate anyones rights, but on the other hand I don't have any difficulties coming up with all new material either.

To be honest, I'm a Creative Director who has taken off a few years to raise my two boys. I find myself with a little time (very little, these two kids are CRAZY!) every now and again and wouldn't mind helping out.
Here are a few of my game creations...
NOTE: I use all kinds of resources for my handouts, so you may see something you recognize (or even wrote and posted on these boards) never fear, this stuff is only distributed for fun. :)

That's some great stuff! (Repped, BTW) As Bob said, I know some people (myself included) will be looking for character and other art along the way, and I want to build a stable of artists for commissioning cover art for Haymaker! issues in coming months. Drop me an email (at RayL@haymaker.org) so I can get in touch.
Any other artists are also welcome to make themselves known, too. You might want to mention your strengths and, if you have a webpage with samples, include a link.

IIRC, they did acquire the rights to the EZ Hero articles. I signed a contract for the use of an article that appeared in it, though I'm presuming sales never warranted payment. I do recall that the contract ceded all rights to the article to DOJ.

Yeah, my interest is piqued too, because without the list of publication credits, publishing the whole world at large is going to be hard, and it's going to get harder, I think. Not sure, tho.

I've had a look at the Haymaker site, and I have a few questions/ statements of the obvious/ requests for confirmation...
The ezine is quarterly, yes?
If so you therefore require a minimum of two articles per year from each author?
I notice in you do issues as themes. Do authors have to produce an article based on that theme, or is there some 'wriggle room'? Basically if an author has a large article that they want to split up over a series of issues, is that possible, even if it doesn't fit into the issue theme?
Thanks for your time. :-)
TygerLily
Feb 16th, '08, 06:09 AM
I asked about the theme's as well, and the response I receive was "It's not a requirement, more something to add some cohesiveness and maybe ferment ideas in a contributor's mind if he or she is suffering writer's block."

TygerLily has it right in one.
My first stuff for Haymaker! was a series of articles on the Malachite Islands, in four parts. In one or two cases, their connections to the theme were... a bit tenuous. So no real worries there.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the themes. What's the theme for this issue?
BoloOfEarth
Feb 16th, '08, 04:08 PM
The theme is, strangely enough, Themes: "Some of the best, and most memorable, stories and characters have been based on some kind of theme. Why not share your favorite theme-based characters or organizations or give us advice on how to use themes in your games."
Next issue is the Bigger is Better issue: "Contrary to what they say, size does matter. So let's see your friendly (or not so friendly) giants, huge vehicles, sprawling bases, or anything else larger-than-life that strikes your fancy!"
Susano
Feb 16th, '08, 04:12 PM
I don't think my submission will count as a theme article... well, the character doesn't have a theme per se, but the article does, it shows the character at the start of the campaign she was used in, at the end, and the start of the sequel game, set ten years later.
