View Full Version : Gen Con Registration Open

I just realized that no one had posted anything about this yet.

Gen Con 2008 registration opened yesterday and hotel registration opened today at noon (sorry to be so late posting this). Also, event submission opened yesterday. If you're thinking of running something this year, you should get it in early. This year, events will be scheduled in three cycles based on when they're submitted. For example, events submitted and accepted between Feb. 3 and Feb. 25 will be scheduled before events in the next two cycles. And remember there is a space shortage at Gen Con this year due to the ongoing construction.

Got my GenCon membership, hotel reservation, and flight. :)

And I'm seriously considering submitting a Dragaeran Hero adventure that I've been toying around with for the last couple of years...

Enforcer84

And registered. Now we just need the flight...
and games. I need games!

So...could our heroes post here as they get their events registered? I wanna throw down in the Can of Whoopass this year, and what ever game Oddhat is running.
Beyond that....well we'll see!

Hotel booked and hubby's badge purchased. My badge is coming, just waiting for the exhibitor badges to be processed.

Unfortunately, it'll have to be another year before I get to go. :(

I hope I won't repeat my last dry spell between GenCon's (1996 and 2006.)

No HeroCon for me this year either. Oh, well.

Nope, sorry...spending Wed/Thu night at home and driving in since we have to put kiddos on the school bus, then Fri - Sun at the Hyatt.

Keri and I will be at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre.

That's funny. Our hotel is listed as the Radisson, but it's also the Sheraton. Same thing, I guess.

Looks like it, assuming 31 West Ohio Street is the address of the one you're at. :)

The Sheraton used to be a Radisson, I believe. I think it switched just before last year's con.

I'm at the Omni-Severin.

It's listed as both in the housing selection.

I was looking at the Omni-Severin, but it filled up before I decided. *shrug* The Sheraton is just a couple of blocks further away.

Is it too late to get a decent hotel??

I was busy and miss it yesterday.

How hard is it to get a refund if I decide I can't go??

thanks.

And where is most of Hero's staying??

From what I understand the only rooms left are at places at least 8 miles away. My understanding is also that there is a universal $50 charge for cancelling a room, regardless of which hotel.

Thag, the Adam's Mark and the Airport Holiday Inn are both nice. They're 8 miles away, which translates as about a 5 minute drive. I've never seen really bad traffic on I-70 (between the Airport and the Convention Center), but I guess that depends on your definition of "bad traffic." ;) So it's not that big of a deal. Two years ago they had a shuttle service from the hotels to the convention center, but I don't think they're doing that again this year. There is plenty of parking in the area -- there's a parking garage right across the street (it was $20/day when we were there last), or you can park in the underground parking at the mall (also $20/day, but I think you can get your parking validated if you buy something at the mall).

So staying at one of the "off-site" hotels isn't really such a bad thing. :)

Last year we registered for a hotel, and then sent a note asking to be moved to a closer hotel and ended up with a room at the Crown Plaza at Union Station.

WOW. 8 miles is 8 miles and 20 dollars a day parking is like 100 dollars just for parking for the whole trip....

I actually ment getting a refund for GenCon membership.

I guess I should have done all of this yesterday. and this news pretty much sinks my going.

I just had enough for room and membership. An extra 100 dollars for parking really kills the deal.

I'd call the housing office (317-684-2573) and talk to someone directly. Make sure you have your code from your badge registration e-mail reply. I know they keep waiting lists for hotels, so you can probably get on a waiting list for a downtown hotel while booking one of the airport hotels just to make sure you have something.

You could also just wait and monitor the housing web site and see if more downtown rooms become available. It often happens but I wouldn't guarantee it.

I wouldn't worry too much about where other Hero folks are staying -- the downtown hotels are all within 5 or 6 blocks of each other as is any place most of us go -- it's pretty easy to hook up with people. Exchanging cell phone numbers with a few people helps.

How much a night were you planning on paying for a room? The airport hotels tend to be cheaper so there may be a way to do it. on a similar budget.

Your other option may be to ask around on here and other forums such as the GenCon community forums to see if anybody is looking for someone to share accomodations.

teh bunneh
Feb 5th, '08, 12:41 PM
Yeah, the airport hotels are like $30 per day cheaper than the ones downtown. Also, rooming with someone is a great idea. That's what we're doing. There's also the possibility of carpooling from the airport hotels (though that limits your flexibility a bit). We carpooled with Scott Bennie one time.

Ah gaming cons, how I love thee. I just paid for the privilege of paying more money to game.

I'll be driving out. (if you want I can drive stuff to and back for you Mr. Bunneh, save you some airplane space.)

Also ... I plan on storming the Hero guys early Thursday, acquiring a copy of their latest book(s) and having reviews done by Thursday evening. . . I'll then track down the nearest kinkos, storm that, print out the reviews and force the Hero Booth the display them.

There are a few cheaper places to park, but you have to hunt for them. We found an open lot that was a few blocks away for, I think less than $10 a day. Of course, you have to get there early or be lucky on Thursday and Friday, since you're in competition for the folks who work in downtown Indy. Come to think of it, I think I only found spaces available in that lot on Sat. and Sun.

On another note, this year, for the first time, I'll be staying at the Sheraton. So close by, and no drives back and forth! Whoop!!!

Today's the last day for Tier 1 submissions:

Events will be reviewed and assigned locations in three cycles during the event submission period. Events approved in a cycle will be assigned a location before events submitted in subsequent cycles are assigned locations:
Events submitted during cycle 1 (Feb 3 – Feb 25) will be placed before those in cycles 2 or 3. Events submitted during cycle 2 (Feb 26 – March 17) will be placed after events from cycle 1 but before events from cycle 3. Events submitted during cycle 3 (March 18 – March 31) will be placed after everything else.

Part of me wants to throw a few event descriptions together. Part of me figures that the badge is the least of my expenses, and I don't really need to run to get reimbursed. Maybe I could just go as an attendee (for the first time in over a decade) and run again next year when they've finished with the construction.

TygerLily
Feb 25th, '08, 11:22 AM
This is the first year I won't be just an "attendee", so you can trade me places, Karmakaze. If you get bored *hehe* just being an attendee, come check out the Gamers for Humanity booth and if I'm there, I'll put you to work.:) That way, it will feel more like normal.

What?! I'm just being helpful!

I did also consider not worrying about today's deadline and seeing if there was any interest in putting together a HERO/Champions 101 module. The Call of Cthulhu folks do it every year and it seems to go over well. And I have a fair amount of experience in gently inducting new players into the system at conventions.
