I have to admit that I'm a little saddened to see 6th Edition being cut into two books. That being said, go for it! It makes perfect sense. Every other system is two or three core books, and if it makes the system more accessible to the beginning HERO player, I say do it.

But, do you think we could get $5 off a bundle if we buy it from the store?

I fail to see how two books makes it accessible but OK. I'm almost always not the target audience anyway.

One reason is the "length" argument. Several other systems' rules are just as long as 5ER but they're split, and in many cases split giving a perception that they are shorter.

It's all about perception really. And perception is marketing.

As always I'm of a different mindset than the rest of the world. I would have bought Traveler HERO right off in one book but with two I waited to let someone else buy it first to see if I really wanted both. I really like the ease of just always reaching for one book. I suppose GMs could buy both and players just character creation though.

I have said it elsewhere, I have no problem with two books and here is why. Due to a couple of medical reasons I no longer the strength I had in my hands. One book would be just too hard for me to hold up for a long period of time. I believe that I am not alone in this situation.

Funny you should mention Traveller Hero.. I just read both. They NEEDED to be one book. but that's a discussion for a review.

I don't know if I'd like two core books, but I would love a shorter, "sidekick-revised" length book for core rules, and a similar or slightly bigger sized book for optional rules designed around genre emulation.

I don't mind two-book "core rules" if only one of the books is -really- mandatory (see Gurps 3rd & Compendium I) for a full game, but I do mind it if you need to buy both books. (see Gurps 4th.)

I agree with you here, I know 5th added some additional explainations and examples, but I'm still not sure what caused it to double in size between 4th and 5th ed. Now I recall 4th ed Champions was a book about the size of 5th but it also included the Champions setting, the stand alone HERO book was only 256 pages or so and I felt it covered everything that needed to be covered just fine and I don't think there are 250 pages of examples in 5th. But like I said I haven't really done a side by side, so it is quite possible 5th added stuff from several source books. While I like all the stuff in mt HERO books I do think it would be beneficial to get back to a single 256 page book even if that meant breaking down the game into 1 core book and 2 or 3 additional source books similar to GURPS' Core rules, high tech, powers etc. Unfortunately the powers are such an integral part of HERO I don't see how you could seperate them into an optional book and they are a large portion of the book.

I do think two 256 page books would be a positive step, a 128 page players book and a 256 page GM's book would be better, but I'm assuming DOJ is looking at two books because 6th won't fit into one book the size of 5th so we are probably looking at a minimum of a 256 page players book and a 500+ page GM's book.

From what I gleaned, one book will character creation, and the other will be combat and the world.

Me, I'm getting the character creation book for sure.
