Hate to be the one to bring up this one, but there are some good books coming before 6th edition. How is possible 6th edition gonna effect those books.
Like the book of the destroyer and such?

HERO has been very good with backwards compatability compared to say D&D. Changes are usually very painless.
From Steve Long's comments, I doubt major changes will require scrapping your books. Heck I still use a lot of 4th Gen material right now.
The great thing about HERO is because they show you how they built the power, you can easily rebuild the power using the new rules. The final point costs are sometimes different but most GMs will just let you keep the power and up rev the points to compensate such that the potential of the power does not get out of hand.
History
The only major change was going from 3rd to 4th when a lot of major abuses/loopholes were closed. Many characters had to be rewritten in a major fashion. I believe that the changes from 3rd to 4th brought a huge amount of people into the game as the rules became more solidified and coherent. Changes between 4th and 5th was for the most part painless, though there was some disagreement on some changes, converting back and forth between 4th and 5th wasn't hard. (I see many people use 4th gen characters in 5th gen games with no problems.)

Steve Long has mentioned that most of the Champions books before 6E comes out will emphasize background information over game stats, so will retain most of their usefulness after 6E.

This thread was moved because it was not appropriate for the 6E forums, which are for rules issues only.
