OKies here is your turn to try to really defend com and keep it as is in the game, (at this point in steve's thinking it will probably go away or be replaced).
start off with I like it as is, most ppl keep it at 10, some raise it, others lower it (getting up to 5 points back). therefor eve though
Here are some notes for just keeping it.
1. It makes dramatic sense: people in the media fall into 3 classes the pretty, average and ugly.
2. I think it adds roleplaying depth, see examples below
3. just because there are no mechanics associated with the ability does not mean that there shouldn't be. perhaps bonuses to certain things and modifers to others
4. It sees activity. this is perhaps the best point, if NO ONE ever adjusted the stat then there would be no reason to keep it in game. Unlike the farily usless Unearthed Arcana version (since most ppl i ever played with did not adjust stats in AD&D) I personally as an in game motivation (PSL in love with another) looked into raising my com as a way to gain the affection of another.
Personally I just used it last session, the uuuuuugly borg (2 com) walks up to a strangers house to figure out what is going on with a particular house. He has no to little social skills so he just knocks on the door. (right so far) the guy is kind enough to open the door but doesn't say anything (well what would you say if the Terminator showed up at your door?). the borg gets a scant look inside the room and then turns around and leaves.
Someone with a higher com and some social skils would have had a chance to have gotten info out of the guy. As it was they aren't big on asking the neighborhood questions. they just use spl senses to get the gist and move on without interacting with the neighborhood. If they ever visit my Brazil he will be sooo ignored
so how do YOU use Com in your games?
And the reason WHY it isn't on a sticky thread is COm shows up in skills, char, and a bunch of other places, thus having ONE place to defend the fairest of them all is relevant issue i think.
Other options with Com although a "fairest in the land" reputation mechanic would not be bad (perhaps with a note as to defending the title so to speak)
how about as a figured? Say Body/5+Con/5? (the argument for that being "healthy" is generally considered a attractant) this would change the stat to a figured and would explain people like Conan
