Hello All,

I am now beginning to create the character I have been dreading somewhat... the martial artist. After reading the Martial Arts section of the core book, I am not nearly as daunted as I was originally... it appears that you simply buy the maneuvers that you wand, and then you can improve them with DC levels and CSL's.

I have some basic questions as I prepare to create our first Martial Arts character:

- When you buy a martial arts maneuver is it usable both empty handed, and with a weapon... or do I need to buy each seperately? For example, if I want to buy Martial Strike and know how to use it empty handed, as well as with a knife... do I buy it once, or twice (once for empty handed, and once for the knife)?

- When buying CSL's for martial arts maneuvers can I simply buy 5pt CSL's and use it as a +1 to all HTH attacks (and thus all martial maneuvers)?

- One page 407 of the core Hero 5th Edition Revised book there is a section titled Combat Skill Levels, Haymakers, and Martial Maneuvers. This section explains that Damage bonuses from Haymakers, Martial Maneuvers, and Combat Skill Levels are not affected by advantages. They add to an attack that has Advantages at the same rate as they do an attack with no Advantages. This is proceeded by the following example:

Chan Hseng wields a knife (HKA ½d6 [2 DCs], Armor Piercing). He uses his

Martial Strike (+2 DCs) to increase the damage done by the knife. This means the
knife does HKA 1d6 damage — the Advantage doesn’t aff ect the way his Martial Maneuver
damage bonus applies to the knife’s damage. This remains true regardless of what Advantage the
knife has — +1 Increased STUN Multiplier, Ranged, Penetrating, or what have you.

I can not figure out what this is trying to say... can someone explain to me what the point of this section is.

- Lastly, there is

Thanks as always!

It is bought as either useable with a weapon OR empty handed. Should you want to use it with a weapon AND empty hadned then you need to by a Weapon Element of the appropriate type.

yes that would include Martial Arts as well as anything else in HTH cambat.

I'll let someone more rules familiar than I am explain this one.

Advantages change the way STR is figured in damage.... i.e. if you have an AP weapon it takes 7.5 STR to add a single DC of damage (opposed to the normal 5 STR adding a DC). This explanation simply states that DCs from Martial Arts, Haymakers, and CSLs are not affected by an advantage placed on a power.

Remember that normal DCs to killing DCs are 2 to 1.

A handy example seems in order. Joe Viperhand the martial artist uses the Deepcut the Armor Piercing Sword - STR Min 10, Damage 1.5d6. He has martial arts (Fast Strike +2 DC) and a 20 STR. His final damage is 2d6+1 (1 HKA DC [each DC is 7.5 STR] from Fast Strike and 1 HKA DC from the Fast Strike).

The statement is simply about how you determine final damage and in this case it says that Advantages do not affect final damages from Martial Arts.
