View Full Version : GameSpy says Champs a "must have"

GameSpy's GenCon wrap-up (http://www.gamespy.com/articles/july03/gencon2003/day4/) has a section called "Five RPG books you need!" Book number three, right after 3.5e and GenCon-sales-record-breaker Arcana Unearthed is Champions.
Granted, I think what they meant to say was HERO, but it makes the point nonetheless.

what they ment is Fantasy Hero...
Champions don't fall in their league of games because Champions is a mix with science and fiction and Fantasy is like Earth in the Middle-ages

I don't know about Earth during the Middle Ages ... last that I knew most of the fantasy worlds had about as much to do with Earth as Star Wars does with the United Federation of Planets ;)

I'm afraid I don't understand what you're saying. They seem to pretty much mean HERO, and also mention the release of Fantasy HERO.
This arithmetic-intensive RPG got a new version last year, and it's still the gold standard for point-based games, using the hero system (sic) rules.

What i ment is that they don't know what is what: they are referering to champions as if champions is Fantasy Hero and visa virsa. There is a difference between a gadgeteer in armor then a knight in armor...or am i here the only history geek on earth ?
They don't even point out which manual they referring too. Because they are talking about Unearth Arcana, Dungeon and Dragons (this is fantasy and Champions is not), i guess they were talking about Fantasy hero because Champions is not Fantasy game. It is like comparing Lord of the Rings with Star Wars and there is huge difference between the two worlds or compare Champions and Ravenloft

This doesn't really seem worth arguing about, but it seems pretty clear that they are using "Champions" to refer to HERO in general (see the quote in my last post), and that AFTER THAT mentioning that Fantasy HERO was released at GenCon this year (which it was, basically). Look:
This year, Fantasy Hero, the fantasy expansion book for the hero system debuted at the Con to some acclaim.
(Emphasis added)
It's just a list of their "must-haves"; Call of Cthulhu and Rifts were one the list, too. I'm not sure why this is confusing.
Anyway, all that matters is that GameSpy, which is probably read by more people than most gaming boards since it covers mostly computer and console games, said something very good about HERO. I think that's pretty cool. :)

Actually, now that I'm finally able to get the page to load up on my system (I've been trying since yesterday), it looks to me like the GameSpy guys got it all correct. Champions did get a new version last year, and it is the game for "superhero punch-'em-ups." That's the game they're recommending here, also noting that Fantasy Hero was released this year.

Yeah, but the way they phrase it...
This arithmetic-intensive RPG got a new version last year, and it's still the gold standard for point-based games, using the hero system rules.
...is somewhat misleading. Champions is really a setting, and they failed to capitalize HERO, which is really the "gold standard" they're referring to.
Lordy, it doesn't really matter. Guess I have too much time on my hands. :)

I am sorry because i though i was right but indeed the words of gamespy with the words "HERO" is a bit misleading and i was mislead...

Overall the list seems to start off talking about individual books (Five RPG Books You Need!) and does so for the first two entries (D&D3.5 & AE). Then the writer veered far off into apparently talking about systems instead of individual books, erroneously calling HERO system Champions, flips between d20 and classic CoC, and then talks about the far-reaching RIFTS material (not a must-have IMO but YMMV).
Considering the sloppy writing, geenral hand-waving and inability to stay focused on the topic (books not systems or genres), I think the reporter phoned his article after eavesdropping on rpgers throughout the con.

I still call the Hero System, Champions. And everytime I do, Steve hits me in the head with a bag of d6's. The real problem here is that it was Champions 20 years ago, back when I was still learning new stuff. So, it's always going to be Champions to me.
Still, it's nice to be one that list.

How many dice in the bag?

Thankfully, we play with a 60 active point cap.
So, 15 -- 12 for rolling damage, 3 for rolling to hit. As everyone knows, you can't use the same dice for both.

Is this a gaming-only problem, or do you still call Nissan cars "Datsuns" too? ;) :D

Andy is secretly Mr. Burns, sending his parcels by autogyro to Siam and investing all his money in Amalgamated Spats.

Regardless of Game Spy's inability to think correctly, it's nice to have some praise for Hero.

So, on average you are only taking 42 points of STUN and 12 BODY. I hope you bought your resistant armor, Andy.

So then every time he hits you with the bag... (wait for it)
...you take 15 dice of damage!
