Background/History: Kreeshka is a Ghoul, a race of men with transparent bodies (but visible skeletons) who dwell in the City of Ghouls, located on the shore of the Sea of Monsters in the deserts to the east of Sarheenmar. She is a warrior, like all Ghouls, and spends some time traveling with Fafhrd has his lover and companion.

Personality/Motivation: As a rule, Ghouls dislike the other races of Nehwon, calling them “Mud Men” since their flesh is opaque to light. They consider it their duty to transform mud-flash to crystal-flesh by devouring. This has led to Ghouls being feared by most other peoples of Nehwon. As for Kreeshka, she manages to put aside her distaste for med-flash long enough to fall in love with Fafhrd, for a time anyway. As for Fafhrd, he notes her courage, spirit, and ready (albeit dry) wit.

Quote: “All you kind seem as mud to us, whose flesh is as sparkling clear as running water in a brook untroubled by man or rains.”

Powers/Tactics: Ghouls fight with a short doubled-edged needle-pointed sword in each hand. They tend to block with one and strike with the other, but have been known to hurl their swords at a foe before closing with and fighting with the remaining blade. Ghouls also use bows and other melee weapons, but rarely. Since they don’t wear any clothing aside from a simply harness, they tend to put most of their levels in DCV, blocking and dodging blows.

Appearance: A Ghoul looks like a tall, long-limbed human with a thin, rangy build. Their hair, skin, and flesh is mostly transparent, although one can see the glisten of firelight from their skin under the right conditions. In addition, food is visible once chewed, and then fades into transparency as it’s digested. Kreeshka seems to be of average height, slender, small breasted, with shoulder length hair.

Designer's Notes: This character sheet is meant to represent both Kreeshka and a generic Nehwon Ghoul. I built her stats around the idea of the Light Fighter package from Fantasy Hero, bumping up her INT and EGO to represent her courage and ready wit. As she survives all the fights she’s in (even when her companions don’t) I gave her a 4 SPD and the +2 with HTH. Lesser Ghouls would have only a 3 SPD and maybe +1 with HTH. You can easily create tougher warriors by upping the STR, CON, and adding in things like Martial Arts and more Combat Skill Levels.

(Kreeshka and the Nehwon Ghouls created by Fritz Leiber, character sheet created by Michael Surbrook)

Another great addition to the ranks of Hero! Kreeshkra is a wonderful character. Perhaps in particular because of the way she idly speculates about whether she will grow bored of Fafhrd one morning and tear his throat out with her teeth before he wakes.

Not ideal dating material but for those characters who like to live dangerously ...

Do you have any plans to stat up any of the other dangerous women of Nehwon? There was one minor character who spent years going mad in a dungeon and designing nasty weapons with which to murder the first man she met once she got out of there.

None of the other characters really stuck with me enough to get notes taken. I want to try the Cloud of Hate and maybe a God of Lankhmar, but that's about it.

This is a question from a person who as never read the books but is curious about this; as they run around naked, wouldn't Life Support: Cold be appropriate? Or do they actually bundle up if they leave mild climes?

PS Cool race and nice write up, I should really read the books.

It's never brought up... but several Ghouls did wear cloaks at one point.

An interesting little ethical dilemma would be a chance encounter with a group of ghouls that turns nasty, (unsurprisingly), however, one of the female warriors, whom the others protect, is visibly pregnant i.e. her belly hasn't pushed out much yet but you can see the baby growing in her womb.

Assuming they aren't the sort of people who will kill a pregnant woman even if she and her friends are homicidal cannibals the PC's must then decide how to subdue this ghoul and what to do with her afterwards. She probably isn't going to warm to them any time soon.

To make this into a full adventure the unborn baby in question could be the heir to the throne of the Ghoul people, but another faction has conducted a coup and would dearly love to get it's hands on the future princeling.

How far would the party go to protect a child who is likely to grow up to be, as they see it, 'evil'?

When I wrote up ghouls for the Nehwon campaign I ran years ago, I gave them a fairly decent Stealth roll, but I don't recall if that was some rationalization on my part or if Lieber actually mentioned some advantage of clear flesh in sneaking and hiding.

Depends... how many XPs is it worth? :D
