View Full Version : What happened to San Angelo?

A friend of mine is thinking of running a San Angelo campaign and I was wondering whatever happened to that setting. Gold Rush Games website has been down for a while or it moved to I don't know where, and last I looked they were planning a second edition with 5th edition stats and an updated setting. Has that been abandoned?

IIRC, Mark posted somewhere on these forums what basically is a quote from John Lennon "Life is what happens while you are making other plans."

Thanks to everyone here who has expressed concern about the "demise" of GRG. And thanks, also, to Rob Miller who let me know about this thread once I was back in contact with the world. Also many thanks to Greg Stolze and others for the words of support.

Unfortunately, I have been exceptionally slow to do any sort of updating on GRG items, from the web site to projects. For those who really want the skinny... The long and the short of it is that with Margaret at home taking care of our daughter and me back to work full-time outside of the house, I have ended up working a tremendous amount of over-time. What little precious "free time" I have left is taken up largely by familial commitments, leaving little meaningful time to work on GRG projects.

Add to this the fact that I had some server issues and all of my goldrushgames.com e-mail was blocked (returning "bounce" or rejected messages to all senders) starting back in May or June. This went one for several months before I realized that I was getting none of the mail from those servers (I was still getting e-mail from other addresses, so I thought it was just a "slow period" for GRG-mail-related messages).

Well, the issue was resolved and mail is coming through again. The next step is to try to salvage the web site. I still have no idea what;s happened there.

Apologies to anyone who's been waiting for me to respond to one message or another. If you tried to contact me in the last three months or so, assume I never got your message and feel free to resend it t me.

Action! System is dead? Well, I've long held that the life of a product is in the hands of the consumers, not our. We could crank out two new products a month all year long but if no one bought and used them, then the system would be effectively "dead." The reverse is true for products with no new support material coming out.

As a fellow consumer and gamer, however, I totally understand how some of you feel about the A!S. I had big plans, decent execution, and lousy follow through. The fix? A relaunch starting with Second Edition. When? Not for some time. I have things going on in my life right now -- and for the foreseeable short term -- that will all but prevent me from doing any substantial work on it (or Sengoku 2nd Ed for that matter).

I'd like to round up some help to develop these products. That is probably the next practical step.

Once again, thanks to everyone. And good gaming!

Thank you for unearthing and transcribing that, TQM. :)

Just to add a bit of data: Gold Rush Games did publish an additional supplement for San Angelo a few years ago, with multiple game stats including HERO Fifth Edition: The Dragon's Gate: San Angelo's Chinatown. Apparently the sales for it were disappointing, which dampened GRG's enthusiasm for updating the setting generally. (Dragon's Gate was published in both hardcopy and PDF - I'd have to check on the Internet as to whether the PDF is still available for purchase.)

Despite that disappointment, GRG did hire one of our board colleagues, Rob Miller, who posts here as RPMiller, to revise and expand San Angelo. Unfortunately, with the state of the company as prez Mark Arsenault describes it above, that project has been languishing. Rob Miller would likely be the person to ask about its current status. Hopefully he'll see this thread and offer some input. (I just sent a Private Message to Rob pointing out the thread to him.)

Add me to the chorus looking to take a gander at those pdf's, and thanks !!
My current Team Norfolk campaign owes much of it's inspiration to San
Angelo.

And yes, those who are in that campaign should probably avoid reading that
supplement.... :sneaky:

Yep, back before they started having trouble with their website.

I loved San Angelo and through it found Astro City.

Thanks for making the San Angelo stuff available, QM. Repped.

I'm about to wrap up a closed-ended campaign, and while I'm not planning on GMing again anytime soon (gotta love grad school!), San Angelo would be a great setting.

I might still have the old stats for the Arroyo Verde characters laying around. I don't know if Mark or Steve would have any objections to my posting them somewhere, but if not and if I do have them I might be willing to update them to 5ER (via HD) and post accordingly.

I would love to have them. Everybody did such a good job righting up characters for San Angelo.

That would be fantastic

Hi everyone. Just wanted to say I've loved San Angelo since it first came out. I am starting a new Champions game that will be set in San Angelo. Having fun rereading all the books and deciding what will be the main villains and storylines.

Does anyone know if there has ever been any thought of updating San Angelo to 5/6th edition and the timeline? Reading my original books and the PDFs here makes me really want more for the city. I am doing some updating/changing for my upcoming campaign. In the front of the Arroyo Verde book it mentions Mystics of San Angelo.

San Angelo: City of Heroes by Gold Rush Games is closed business. I am sorry to say there will be no future Source books, but we can hope.

Thank you QM. That is what I thought but I wanted to check. I am having so much fun getting to run my San Angelo Campaign that I just dream about more source books for this wonderful city. I guess I will have to create them myself for my campaign.

What would be the policy of sharing such things here? I mean if I create a number of mystic teams based in San Angelo would I be able to share them here for others to use?

Thank you again for your answers and the PDFs. I am going to have a long weekend reading them and plotting my campaign.

Out of curiosity, which volumes in the series do you have? There were a few source books published beyond the core SA setting.

Folks share characters and plots they've created for published game worlds (including the official Champions Universe) all the time around here. As long as you don't reprint the stats of already-published characters (including your own modified versions), and don't transcribe a lot of background information or text from the books, there should be no issues.

I have the original San Angelo book (signed by Patrick Sweeney), Denziens of San Angelo and Enemies of San Angelo in book form, Dragon's Gate in PDF. And then the three PDFs that were posted in the thread. If I am missing any please let me know!

And thank you for clarifying what can be posted here. As I start to develop villains and teams I will start posting them here. My biggest chore right now is figuring out what I will keep with minimal changes from the books and what will be updated since 12 years have gone by.
