It's a few years old, but the Italian town where things spontaneously combust (http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1529261) is also a potential real world plot seed.

Either that, or he's trying out a new electro-plating process.

Yep, happened to me once. I was pissed. Turned out they had moved to a new location and offered to continue my membership, but it was too far away.

The fires burning under Centralia could have a number of hooks - especially dealing with the demonic realm. Perhaps it attracts infernal creatures. Perhaps it was really caused by an infernal creature. This also gives some info if you wanted the same type of effect but somewhere else.

Forget the stupid "aliens'' thing, people without any features showing up in public might some spark for somebody.

Also these people look an awful lot like The Question. Perhaps instead of being a lone agent, it is a society who seeks to remain to hide their identities.

An independent real-world plot seed (or, perhaps, complication feature) described in an NGD post here (http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1813402#post1813402): shallow earthquake swarm not far from the Hanford Atomic Works.

(You could have such a swarm anywhere that was convenient for your plot, though.)
