Would a Pulp Hero on-line games like the upcoming Champions book be a good idea?

AFAIK, no one has done a MORPG in a pulp setting so right from the get go it would be set apart from the competition. I imagine that the common wisdom if it has been considered at all is that the pulps don't have enough fans to make something like this work, but good storytelling will always find an audience.

Gangsters, femme fatals, secret societies, mad scientist, the occasional monster, hey what is not to like?

But can you do good storytelling in an MMORPG? With people playing WoW, SWG, and such can the exotic locations on Earth compete?

That is kinda my take on it. I am the lone vote of Bad Idea. I, personally like Pulp RPGs. However, for it to work it would have to pull people from WoW, SWG, CoX, and (heaven forbid) the upcoming Champions Online.

Yes, it could work, but it would go the way of games such as Rubies of Eventide (google it) and die. Which would be ashame.

Intersting idea. I agree that good writing will find a market.

I've never seen any storytelling in MMORPGs. Only quests.

Although I hear good things about Conan.

Any genre that needs social interaction as part of the plot doesn't do very well in the MMORPG environment. NPCs just aren't AI enough. There's only so much that can be done with expert systems and multiple choice conversations. It's a frequent problem encountered by Interactive Fiction game creators.
