why are these both 10 ponts/the same damage class?

1/2d6 does 1-3 while 1d6-1 does 1-5.

Whats up with that? Why would you ever choose to take a half die as opposed to the clearly better 1d6-1 for the same cost?

Is 1d6-1 really 1-5 or is it 0-5?

IIRC, 1d-1 does a minimum of 1 point. Therefore the possible values are:

1,1,2,3,4,5. That averages out to 2 2/3 points per die. Much better than 1/2d. IIRC, 1d-1 used to be 12 points. It probably should be.

They really shouldn't be the same damage class. In fact, the progression works out a lot better if you can insert the xd6-1 DC in between the x1/2d6 and the full d6 DC. That gets rid of this huge jump between x1/2d6 and the next full d6 DC.

I once worked out a variant DC scheme for KA that cost 4 points per DC and added in the xd6-1 DCs:

FDC DMG min avg max active pts size
------------------------------------------------------
0 1 pip 1 1 1 1 -2
1 1-2 1 1.5 2 4 -2
2 .5d6 1 2 3 8 -1
3 1d6-1 1 2.67 5 12 -1
4 1d6 1 3.5 6 16 0
5 1d6+1 2 4.5 7 20 0
6 1.5d6 2 5.5 9 24 0
7 2d6-1 2 6.02 11 28 +1
8 2d6 2 7 12 32 +1
9 2d6+1 3 8 13 36 +2
10 2.5d6 3 9 15 40 +2
11 3d6-1 3 9.5 17 44 +3
12 3d6 3 10.5 18 48 +3
13 3d6+1 4 11.5 19 52 +4
14 3.5d6 4 12.5 21 56 +4
15 4d6-1 4 13 23 60 +5
16 4d6 4 14 24 64 +5

I really couldn't afford the time it took to work this out. :D

One possible solution would be 1d6-2

1d6-2min1
1
1
1
2
3
4
12/6 = 2

Or 2/3d6

2/3d6
1 = 1-0
2 = 2-0
2 = 3-1
3 = 4-1
3 = 5-2
4 = 6-2
15/6 = 2.5
