I started a playlist >Strange Vehicles (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL89F8C672641CCE52)< on Youtube. If anyone finds something you think I might want to know about , either PM me a link or post it in this thread, if appropriate./ETA

Ordinarily, superheroes shouldn't have to wait for the bus or hail a cab. This thread is for links to (or pictures of) aircraft, spacefraft, or any combination of the two that superheroes might use.

XST-71V Supersonic Transport

The XST-71V supersonic transport is a development of the technology that went into the SR-71. The original purpose of this craft was to provide the US Military with a supersonic transport with VTOL capability for its Rapid-Deployment Forces. Unfortunately, the cost-benefits analysis for this VTOL-SST was completed after the first few prototypes had been assembled. The XST-71V was demilitarized and sold to Danforth Industries, which has refitted the vehicle with Electrostatic thrusters powered by a compact prototype electroplasma power generator. Performance is still classified, but top speed is estimated to be Mach 3+, and maximum altitude is more than 100,000 feet (roughly 30,000 meters). It is currently on loan to the International Defenders of Freedom.

General Products Aerospace Shuttle Mk IV
(GPA-S Mk IV)
Originally designed as a SSTO replacement for the shuttle, the GPA-S Mk IV program was cancelled. In order to recoup at least part of the expense of developing the thing in the first place, GPA has made this shuttle available to several different superteams at different times. It is currently on-loan to the Near-Space Defence Force for testing advanced propulsion systems.

Golden Age Batman's Batplane
(XP-67 Bat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XP-67_Bat))

ETA: I removed the original and replaced it with this, though I've done a couple of different variations on this same airframe since.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/SSgtBaloo/Superstuff/Super Transport/Chapparral.png

CS-10 Chapparral

When the Brotherhood of Justice asked to purchase the burned out hulk of the XB-190 so they could restore it to flying condition for their own use, the GAO advised the Air Force to sell it for whatever they could get, after removing all classified systems. Eight months later, Professor Mind rolled out this pale gold aircraft and began submitting paperwork to have it certified as a spacecraft. The FAA and Nasa were difficult to convince that the refurbished aircraft was now space-capable, but after a quick jaunt to the moon, officials approved the design. The BoJ has used this craft to construct their own space station in geostationary orbit above the U.S., and has even aided resupply of the international space station.

Performance is unknown, but there is some speculation that the vehicle uses a faster-than-light propulsion system, at least when in space.

I found a bunch of aircraft diagrams and had to download and clean up as many as I could (Scanned images often turn out a bit wonky). Of course, I can never leave well enough alone, so here's one of my first efforts.*

Edit: JP-51 "Jetstang"

*The P-67 and XST-71V are my first efforts, though the clean-up on the "Batplane" is still incomplete.

Ace pix, SSGT Baloo. I've always imagined a top-flight team of superheroes would have something that looked like USAF/Area 51/NASA "black project". I'd give it an electric (ie: "anti-gravity") propulsion system too.

Is this a real science? It depends on who you ask. I suspect that an orthodox scientist would say no, but Thomas Townsend Brown and Dr Paul Biefeld, neither man regarded as a crackpot, had success with electro-hydrodynamics and the "Biefeld Brown Effect" is a real phenomenon.

Of course, the controversy exists because of the crossover into UFOlogy and the banned phrase "anti-gravity".

Of course, in a superhero campaign with super-genius gadgeteers, there's every possibility that there exists a working electro-gravitic drive.

And maybe FTL as well.

Of course, reproducing the technology is the trick, isn't it?

I look forward to more of these pictures.

This is the Erne (a type of sea eagle), it is the vehicle that the Wardens use to get from Alcatraz island to the mainland and the vehicle picture that was its inspiration.

http://www.angeva.com/images/boards/erne2.gifhttp://www.angeva.com/images/boards/wig.gif

When designing/mapping a vehicle, I usually only work on half of it. Then when that half is completed I mirror it for the opposite half.

Excellent technique. I use that method also. As a consequence, most of my vehicles are an odd number of pixels wide.

What I can see of them is pretty impressive. Can you do three-views of them (or if you can't, do you mind if I have a go at it)?

we have a character that can teleport the team
however the smallest hop is 1 km
and most of the team are fairly slow ground pounders

During a battle with Black Paladin our team needed to follow rapidly so everyone got into a dumpster and was carried to the next battle site

the first Dumpster of Justice came to an end 30 seconds after landing when it was used to smash Black Paladin in a move through after he had been entangled less than a second before

Mk 2(current version) has been made from an 8m long conex box fitted with enough armor to rival a battleship
also included
nanite comm system
an air lock and life support system enough to get in to space with redundancy
it can float and move very slowly on water
and lastly a gravity based teleport system that can move the dumpster 1km,10 km,100km and interface with the powers of team's #3 brick whose powers increase it's range up to 600km per hop
max capacity 9.6 tons + dumpster weight of 6.4 tons=16 tons total wt

The Erne

Although designed as a wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) aircraft, and thus classified as a boat for licensing purposes, the Erne may, with auxiliary power engaged, climb to 20,000 feet. It's intended operating altitude (IOA) is, however, only 35 feet. While cruising at IOA, the Erne consumes only slightly more fuel than it does while taxiing. With a cruise speed of up to 250 knots, the Erne is both faster and more fuel-efficient than airborne or even most waterborne vehicles.

The Hippogriff

The Hippogriff is the smaller of two VTOL aircraft used by the Wardens. It seats 5, including the pilot. There is a navigational dome just aft of the cockpit and both a dorsal hatch and aft ramp for easy egress. The V-tail design was chosen specifically to facilitate egress/ingress by flying supers while the craft is in flight.

Edit: incorrect name has been corrected. Check back periodically as I try to improve the concept. Right noiw* I can see there's not much headroom. :doi:

More Edit: I just figured out this IS the Hippogriff, so I'll be making changes. Stay tuned.

(Hopefully) Last Edit: I think I've fixed all the glaring faults so it probably won't change any more. On to the Pegasus!

some great vehicle designs folks

on the Erne is that a real?concept vehicle?

I know some of the soviet widge craft were capable of limited flight, but the fuel consompution went through the roof, and they couldnt keep it up for long

ok, do you have stats for the Erne, or can I take a crack at it?

just going by rough dimensional volume, were looking at a 36 displacement ton vehicle[500 cubic meters volume/14 giving 36 DT] do we have an idea on her speed and Dex?

what era tech, cold war, modern, futuristic?
how much detail do you want in the write up?
is it armed?

The Erne is a vehicle designed for transporting a superhero team... so my rating of the technology would be modern with futuristic elements... I haven't stat'ed it out yet... DEX and SPD would both be human max as the pilots are not 'supers'... if you want to take a crack at it be my guest.

The picture it was based on was a concept vehicle that I found on this site http://www.se-technology.com/wig/index.php

Dunno if this helps at all, but way back in one of the supers game I played in, we used customized Moller Skycars (linky (http://www.moller.com/)) for our team vehicles.

IIRC, Susano even has stats for the beastie in his site. Yup, here (http://surbrook.devermore.net/adaptationsvehicles/realair/moller400.html) it is.

The Pegasus

The Pegasus is the larger of two VTOL aircraft used by the Wardens. It seats 14, including the pilot/navigator and copilot/radio operator. There is a navigational dome just aft of the cockpit and both a dorsal hatch and aft ramp for easy egress. The V-tail design was chosen specifically to facilitate egress/ingress by flying supers while the craft is in flight.

Love the pic... it has the look and feel that I imagined for the Pegasus...

Edit: incorrect name has been corrected. Check back periodically as I try to improve the concept. Right now* I can see there's not much headroom. :doi:

More Edit: I just figured out this IS the Hippogriff, so I'll be making changes. Stay tuned.

(Hopefully) Last Edit: I think I've fixed all the glaring faults so it probably won't change any more. On to the Pegasus!Hippogriff looks good... kind of slim and trim, but not quite... a different vision from mine... I like it none the less...

My conception when designing it was a flying pig of a machine... not graceful looking at all... a brute force short hop, flying taxi versus the Pegasus as the pretty aerodynamic long range exec jet...

The mapping of the cabin area is based on a Blackhawk helo and the wings are from a Harrier jumpjet... my mind's eye pictured over the fuselage wings with a fat bulbous body beneath... engines under the wings snug to the fuselage with rear exit ramp like a Sea Stallion...

Must rep others, etc... oh well... more rep for you when I can...

Thank you for all the pics... they will be going up on the Wardens Chronicles website properly credited as soon as I get a chance to post them...

The Royal Rangerplane

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/SSgtBaloo/Superstuff/Super%20Transport/WestlandP21.png

In late 1939, with the invasion of Poland, Scotland Yard petitioned Parliament to draft at least some superhumans for home defense. Parliament agreed, establishing the Royal Rangers. A visiting pilot/adventurer from America was assisting the RAF with some experimental aircraft at that time and volunteered to construct a STOL transport for the group out of parts scavenged from crashed planes. The forward end was (mostly) a Westland Lysander while the back was from an Avro Lancaster (after considerable modification).

The resulting aircraft could cruise at 175 MPH and had excellent handling qualities. More importantly, it could seat up to ten normal-sized men (or British Lion and 6 other men). It was retired in 1943 after being damaged in an air raid. Various replacement vehicles were provided on an as-needed basis, but the Royal Rangers weren't to have their own aircraft again until the early '60s.

In 1938 an avenger of the night appeared. Although he didn't seem to have superpowers, he did have an assortment of tools with which he fought crime. One of these tools was the Ratplane!

Batplane II

In 1940 Batman contracted Tex Jones to construct a VTOL craft similar to (but much smaller than) Tex's personal hoverbus. The result was the Batplane II*, which Batman took delivery of in November of 1941.

The Batplane II is propelled by two ducted fans, each driven by a TJ-300 radial supercharged diesel 8-cylinder motor producing about 1,200 horsepower. Top speed is above 350 MPH, and maneuverability is superb due to the vectoring vanes in the fan housings. The thrust of the engines may be diverted through an angle from 95 degrees down and forward through 10 degrees up and back. The engine is tuned to allow a variety of fuels, from light fuel oil to 90-weight gear oil, but it runs best on a mixture of kerosene and heating oil. When trimmed for maximum efficiency (300 mph at 18,000 feet), the Batplane II consumes only 9 gallons per hour, making it more than twice as fuel-efficient than many automobiles of the day.

*Loosely based upon the XP-67 Bat.

The XP-50 was developed in 1940 by Tex Jones for production by Vultee Aviation. It is powered by an 8-cylinder radial diesel driving a ducted fan and is capable of over 400 MPH. Several examples were shipped to England just prior to the Battle for Britain, where they proved themselves admirably as they were nearly as maneuverable as the Spitfires and much faster at high altitudes. The Butterfly tail was designed to reduce drag while preserving pitch and yaw control. The tail surfaces are interchangeable, reducing the number of different parts required to be maintained for spares.

I also would like to say I love the pulp and golden age stuff you have been posting... rep would be coming your way except for the "you must spread..."

So, thanks for your efforts... maybe some others will become inspired and join the vehicle posting parade, too...

This vessel was encountered by the League of Democracy Defenders in 1998. The vessel is armed with three beam weapons that can produce an estimated 100 megawatts of power, focussed in a beam about 3 meters in diameter. It is believed that this vessel may have been sent by the PahRhynthian Empire, as its configuration is quite similar to other vessels which have definitely been identified as such.

It is supposed to have been a competing design for the contract that ultimately resulted in the TOS Enterprise and its like.

well Mk 2 lasted 6 game sessions and is now being retired as it is getting a bit small for the team(and a refigureing of points for the base got us a base ,a vehicle, computer and options for 1 more vehicle at a starting base of 210 points each that and I'm going on hiatus to act and sing at the norcal ren faire)
in it's history it had only been damaged once for 2 body
had Foxbat thrown in the secure room in his boxer briefs and mask(next time check the mask)only to have him escape and use the teleport system to move it 100km as a cover for his escape
the DoJ also was respnsible for taking out 3 major villians and the squishing of thousands of zombies and bombing them from orbit in that thousand years in the future nightmare we got dumped in and barely made it home from

Now to introduce

The Dumpster of Justice mk3
the new DoJ is made from 2x48'cargo containers welded together then the liberal applecation of armor still to rival any battleshp
but since my character Wraith will be gone for the next 12 weeks the DoJ would have no powersource to move it(this was so nobody could steal it or it's tires the batmobile can't say that)
so it now can fly and t-port itself
it looks like and flys like a brick
it still has all proper emergency vehicle permits and can now act as a road block across up to 4 lanes of highway

also the secure room is air tight and had a wheel lock put on it that can be tightened to a 55 str and can only be operated from the out side
the handle on the inside will break off if more than 15 str is applied
and there is a weeks worth of food for 10 inside the secure room(it needs to be replaced every week or it goes bad)so hope the team does not forget anybody place there in

you may wonder why there is no affects desolid or teleport hardening
that is because Wraith who sat down and designed it did not want to be locked in it should she be captured and thrown in the secure room

you may aslo wonder why most everything is on 1 side except for the 3 rows of removable seats
this is so we can load stuff into it

Normally Wraith is the pilot and has no need for a view screen since she can see right through the DoJ
but her team mates whined that if it could be flown now they would need to be able to see
she gave it some windows with curtians

The Caproni Lampo was a development of the Caproni-Campini (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campini_Caproni_CC.2). It was smaller, lighter, and more significantly, faster and more maneuverable. The first prototype had a conventional tail with both a vertical stabilizer and rudder and a horizontal stabilizer and elevator. When the XP-50 began operations in the Battle for Britain, the designers decided that their plane would have a butterfly tail also. This delayed production and the Lampo didn't enter production until after the liberation of Italy.

The lampo was capable of cruising at 375 MPH. It was highly maneuverable and was more than a match for any propeller-driven plane with the possible exception of the FW-190, which had a slight edge in speed.

One hundred and five examples of the Lampo were produced, and served the Free Italian forces through the rest of the war and into the early fifties, by which time they had been relagated to trainer status.

The YP-54A Falcon was developed by as a follow-on craft to replace the P-50. While fast and maneuverable, the P-50 lacked the range necessary to fly escort missions over Europe from bases in England or almost any mission in the Pacific theater other than point defence.

Having been allowed to examine a Whittle gas turbine engine in England during the Blitz, Tex Jones designed the Falcon with a turbine-jet of his own design. He retained some features of his ducted fan design, and the oversized first impeller at the front of the motor throws almost 70% of its airflow around the engine rather than through it. This helps keep it from overheating, and provides additional thrust at lower velocities than pure jets allow. The airframe itself looks quite similar to the P-50, but the resemblence is superficial.

The roomy cockpit reduces pilot fatigue, as does the vibration-free (or nearly so) Jet-Fan engine. Instrumentation for the new, simpler powerplant is much less complex, reducing the pilot's workload, and making it less likely that a pilot would miss an enemy aircraft because he was still scanning his instruments. Pilot visibility is also aided by a much higher seat position than in the P-50.

The wing is an unusual "swept" design. It appears that sweeping the wing to some degree delays the onset of compressibility and subsequent loss of control. The YP-54A is capable of impressive speeds of up to 600 MPH in level flight, and is being tested for maximum safe speed in a dive. To prevent overspeeding in a dive, the plane's flaps have been made more robust and serve as speed brakes. Cruise speed is around 300 MPH, while stall speed is about 150.

The Falcon is expected to enter series production by late 1943.

Mine is shorter, wider, VTOL capable, and has a boarding ramp (which implies a lot more internal space for crew and cargo). I really just did a slice-n-dice of an SR-71 three-view. Some of my later stuff is a complete fabrication, however, but based on existing (or proposed) vehicles. The rest is pure brain vapor. Make what you will of it. :doi:

The Defenders' Galactic Clipper

The Defenders of Earth (Universe XZ-21) use this vehicle to travel wherever their missions take them. While small, this vehicle is capable of flight at high subsonic speeds within a planetary atmosphere, and much, much faster once above the majority of the atmosphere. The usual flight path of this vessel includes a very steep and fast climbout to over 100 km altitude, then a quick trip through the exo-atmosphere to somewhere above the destination, followed by a steep descent to the landing point. Recently, courtesy of Saucer-Man, the Galactic Clipper has been equipped with a Carson Bridge Generator capable of creating a subspace fold and enabling the ship to travel at apparently superluminal speeds.

Even in the '30s, superguys needed super transportation...

The Multi-Car

In 1936, Doctor "Mad" Maddington designed a fantastic vehicle capable of travelling along the ground, in the air, under the sea, and even through space. After the Justice Team of America brought Dr. Maddington to justice, they confiscated this engine of destruction and began using it (only) for good. Eventually, Dr. Maddington graduated from Professor Fate's academy for the Criminally Insane and now works to assist the JTA in their neverending battle for Truth, Justice, and the American Way (with apologies to George Reeves :D).

The Multi-Car is equipped with pulse-jet (rocket) tubes just behind the main cabin for propulsion in air and space. The rear wheel steers and the front wheels provide propulsion in ground mode, while an electrically-driven pump propels the Multicar underwater at remarkable speeds. The Multi-Car is armed with a 75mm cannon which can fire signal flares or other ordnance when required. Flash Gordon would be jealous.

Super-Stratocruiser

During the 'forties, the Patriot Squad was given a crashed Boeing Stratocruiser and given free reign to restore and modify it to their purposes. They essentially tore it apart and remanufactured it, ending up with a much larger plane (the Stratocruiser's fuselage is 10' in diameter while the Super-Stratocruiser's diameter is 13' 8") with more powerful engines that could run on diesel oil or kerosene (though at a slight altitude and speed penalty when using kerosene).

Post-war, the Patriot Squad was provided with a refurbished Boeing 307 Stratocruiser. Boeing dismantled, then rebuilt the Super-Stratocruiser to examine and duplicate every part for production as the Boeing 377 Super-Stratocruiser. After production began on the Super-Stratocruiser, Boeing returned the old plane to the Patriot Squad, and began paying royalties on the design. Boeing continued to provide the Patriot Squad with aircraft through 1968, when most of them retired. The Super-Stratocruiser remained in production for many years, though once Boeing introduced its 707 Jetliner, the Super-Stratocruiser was largely utilized as a cargo plane. The fact that it could run on Jet Fuel was something of an advantage, as it was considerably less expensive per pound than the Avgas other piston aircraft used.

It's not as bad as you think.

Sure, the experemental and developmental models had some pretty unplesant accidents, and some handling issues. But that is only to be expected when developing a whole new type of aircraft. How many early aircraft crashed in the first 20 years of powered flight? Thousands? How many helicopters crashed in the 30's as they were being developed. Hundreds, certainly. Loosing a dozen test aircraft (most due to mechanical failure in these same experemental models) ain't that bad.

Look at it this way: There were 2 XB-70's built. One crashed. That was in a 2-year flight-test program (as I recall). The V-22's have been in development for nearly 20 years while they iron out kinks in the systems. The accident rate over that entire period isn't all that bad.

It's become a matter of bad press more than anything else. Like when those F-117's crashed in the late 80's just after the Nighthawks went public. Suddenly "the whole program was riddled with flaws and bound to fail because the basic airframe was aerodynamically unsound." At least, that's what the press said at the time.

I not the F-117 still serves today, and will only be phased out of service as the USAF version of the Joint Strike Fighter comes online.

The current V-22 is a viable military aircraft, which means it meets a reasonable level of ruggedness, reliability, and simplicity.

The Superguys' transport isn't much to look at until you see what it can do. Cobbled together from a salvaged Greyhound Scenicruiser and a crashed UFO, the Superbus is cabable of operations on land, in the sea (to depths of up to 12,000 feet or more), in the air (supersonic VTOL) and in space (hyperdrive).

The Superbus serves as a mobile base for the Superguys, as well as providing rapid transportation.

My bad; I appear to be behind on my military news.

No worries, it was ahead of schedule. In fact, it was sort of abrupt. The rumor mill was that they did it to close a budget shortfall, and that the Raptor, even with it's much lighter bombload of mini-bombs, was such a quantum leap forward in stealth, it made the 117 obsolete. I think that last bit might be a bit of wishful thinking until the JSF comes online.

I agree that it was premature, there are only 2 Raptors in service right now (that I know of). Of course, in exercises they routinely wax 8 Eagles Air-to-air...

Not sure how far they go to repalcing the capacity lost with the Nighthawks. Sure, you could use Spirits, but at a half-billion dollars apiece I don't see them being risked for 'routine' stuff very often.

Nifty design--reminds me of Gerry Anderson's Supercar. Does it fly as well?Nope... it just uses it "wings" and "flaps" to maneuver underwater... It's ballast tanks are very small and are used for the most part to maintain neutral buoyancy... If all ballast is blown, the craft will float...

But hey, it is a super team's vehicle... if someone wants to make it fly then more power to 'em

shadowcat1313
Sep 19th, '08, 07:19 PM
heres an idea, what about giving it actual flapping wings, similar to the way a manta ray moves... then you could easily justify giving it limited flight capability too. you end up with what amounts to semi-amphibious ornithopter

what else can you tell me about the design, I will take a stab at building it
as much detail and fluff as you can will help a lot.

concord
Sep 20th, '08, 06:50 AM
Sorry, I am not much of a 'gearhead' :)

I don't have any real details... beyond the little blurb in my last post, I haven't put any work into the Anhinga... it has not been close to being in a combat, so I never really stat'ed it out... in the campaign, the Wardens have used it mostly to come and go without anyone being able to observe them...

I have been fascinated with underwater 'flying' vehicles since watching the Sealab 2020 cartoon when I was a kid and came back to the idea after watching some pop science shows on television... the ability for a vehicle to operate underwater using 'aerodynamic' principles rather than ballast tanks was what inspired the Anhinga...

Using my Google-Fu, I came across some concept art from the guy in this interview http://nexus404.com/Blog/2007/03/28/concept-submersibles/ and used it as the basis for the 'floorplan' of the vehicle.

Most of the Wardens vehicles I imagine as just a couple of steps beyond current vehicles... not really 'super' vehicles other than super materials, super electronics and miniaturized power systems with the same or more output than their modern larger sized counterparts... mix in a little 'super' physics and the vehicles become super. :)

Did anybody else notice that in "Superman Return" the experimental space shuttle they used was essentially the Delta Clipper mated to a specially modified 747, which is the basic system (shuttle piggybacking on aircraft) NASA originally wanted to use, before NIxon and the military got involved. Tex Jones' TJ-309 (XP-52 prototype)

Just after Pearl Harbor, the War Department issued a requirement for an aircraft that was faster and more maneuverable than the Japanese "Zero". The specifications as written were drawn up before any solid intelligence could be gathered on the Zero to gauge it's real-world performance, and were therefore based on guesses and overestimations.

While several manufacturers offered studies indicating when they might be able to produce such a weapons system, Tex Jones sat down and built one. Less than six months after the requirement had been issued, the TJ-309 was undergoing flight testing under Tex Jones' supervision. While Tex Jones' manufacturing capability was limited, he offered to licence the design to any company willing to produce it.

Curtiss turned down the offer as they were certain their new development based on the P-40 would prove easier to produce for only slightly less performance. Tex Jones shopped the TJ-309 around until finally Lockheed Aircraft decided to give it a go. They offered Tex Jones an exclusive contract, but he declined as he was friends with Kelly Johnson and didn't want to risk harming their friendship.

This is pretty close to what Tex Jones (the Character) flew during the first couple of years of his adventuring career. The powerplants were an extremely compact form of internal combustion motor driving ducted fans. The flaps were an "Upper Surface Blown" system whereby the exhaust from the fans was directed over the top of the wings, and the flaps would direct the airflow in such a way as to convert a lot of the engine power into lift.

A modern example of this type was the XC-16 (of which I will post pictures when I can find some. No luck thus far,:p)

I always thought the XP-67 would make a nice-looking jet. The outer wing segments (outboard of the engine nacelles) always struck me as looking smallish, so I made them bigger and gave them the same leading edge as the Batplane (above) and large leading edge extensible slats.

Inspired by the Nazi Flying Saucer thread, I decided to crank out my own WWII-era flying disk. This one's powered by two jet engines which provide some of the thrust but also power the [insert crazy-sounding antigravity device name here]. I usually do most of the work with MS Paint, then do the "heavy lifting" with GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/).

Here's the base version if anyone wants to try adding appropriate insignia.

Here's the "Camouflage" version.

The camouflage I used:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/SSgtBaloo/Superstuff/Super%20Transport/GermanCamoII.png

I used an aerial view of German forest to make the camo by blurring it several different ways then "posterizing" it. I have no clear idea how I did this, so if anyone is familiar with GIMP any advice is welcome.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/SSgtBaloo/Superstuff/Super%20Transport/Notjager2.png

The Nazi Notjäger (Emergency "Hunter") program was a response to the possibility that the Allies might field large numbers of fast jets and ducted fan aircraft should the Americans enter the war. Several proposals were submitted for approval, with two reaching limited production. The high priority given to the development and production of jet-propelled aircraft by all sides in the war is thought to have originated with Tex Jone's advanced projects and their increasing acceptance in the otherwise conservative American aviation industry.

The above plane is a "rewrite" of the pencil-and-paper AE-24 (KP-44 Gladius, XA-37 Mace). The one below is the Jet-propelled version I was going to draw, but never did till now.

The AE-29 is a fictional competitor to Howard Hughes' H-4 flying boat (http://www.boeing.com/history/boeing/h4_hercules.html). Originally, I started out with a stretched Martin Mars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JRM_Mars) with made-up dimensions, but when I calculated wingspan at over 640 feet I scaled back to about half that big, and still wound up inches larger than the H-4 in every dimension except height. It's powered by eight ducted fans in the wing roots.

XP-40-J

The XP-40-J was constructed as a quick-and-dirty way to test Tex Jones' jet turbine engine. His claims of superior performance over propeller-driven planes prompted Curtiss to offer him an airframe for modification. The resulting aircraft had superior speed and ceiling to the P-40 it was made from, but had slightly less range, though this was eventually offset by fitting external fuel tanks. The ability to group all six machine guns in the nose was another benefit of this configuration.

The pilot's position was moved forward to partially offset the rearward weight bias caused by replacing a nose-mounted engine with an (admittedly lighter) tail-mounted installation. The horizontal stabilizer was raised to keep it from being masked by the wing at high angles of attack, especially on the take-off roll. The tailpipe was also angled downwards by 4 degrees to help offset the aircraft's tendency to keep it's tail "planted" during takeoff rolls.

The XP-40-J was successful enough that it entered production as the P-46. The external tanks were moved to the wingtips, freeing the wing stations for ordnance.

In 1939, Lockheed submitted a proposal to put a jet engine in a modified P-38 airframe. The proposed fighter was intended to be a photo reconnaissance aircraft with a provisional designation of XF-7, but during trials the great speed and improved maneuverability over the P-38 prompted the army to order armed versions as the YP-49. The rearward weight bias induced by eliminating the forward-mounted engines was compensated for by several different strategies, including adding an additional forward-firing cannon, changing the static angle of attack of the wing, and using a different airfoil cross-section to provide the desired rearward shift in center-of-lift. The horizontal stabilizer was raised to keep it out of the jet efflux from the engine, and an ejector seat was installed to help the pilot clear it should he need to bail out.

When the P-49 began operational service, there were complaints about instability which made the plane sensitive in certain flight attitudes and with certain loadouts. To correct this problem, the Lockheed engineers extended the nose by two feet, repositioning as much equipment forward as possible. This not only corrected the instability but added enough fuel tankage to allow nearly double the previous combat radius. This new version was dubbed the P-49A.

A Trainer version was developed To help transition pilots into the new "rocketplane", the P-49B, below. The rear canopy was hinged at the rear and seasted the instructor pilot. The front canopy was hinged on the right and was for the trainee pilot. Apart from a slightly lesser fuel capacity, the P-49B was as capable as the P-49A.

In 1943, Republic Aviation recieved an order for a jet-propelled aircraft based upon the P-47. The P-47 airframe was ideal for such a conversion, as it's engine, supercharger, and ducting, once removed, freed up considerable space for a (relatively) straight-through installation.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/SSgtBaloo/Superstuff/Super%20Transport/Republic450.png

The Republic 450 was a proof-of-concept design intended only to test the proposed engine, ducting, and tailpipe configuration. The Airframe used was an early P-47B that had been used as a chase plane for flight tests. Modifications made apart from engine and ductwork included raising the horizontal stabilizer from the fuselage to partway up the vertical stabilizer.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/SSgtBaloo/Superstuff/Super%20Transport/P-72.png

The Production Aircraft was designated P-72. Based upon the P-47D (block 25) the new aircraft was designed from the outset to be easily converted from pure fighter to tandem-seat trainer. The bubble canopy extended over an auxiliary fuel tank behind the pilot. The auxiliary tank could be removed and replaced by an instructor-pilot's position with an extra set of controls and minimal instrumentation, a process which could be completed in an afternoon, given the sufficient parts and labor.

One note about the historic experimental jet planes - putting jet engines into conventional WWII airframes didn't work, because the 90 degree-mounted wings couldn't handle the stress of jet thrust and speeds long-term (sometimes short term). It wasn't until swept wings were introduced that viable jet aircraft could be deployed.

Still, they are cool, aren't they?

Uhm, no. On the contrary. A wing's resistance to torque is a function of the ratio of the cross-sectional area at the base of the wing (the basic determinant of wing rigidity) to its planform area multiplied or divided by a trig function of the angle of sweep. (Sorry to be vague, I can sort of visualise the math in my head, but it has been one heck of a long time since I took any statics. Anyway, what an expert says on the subject is likely to be a great deal more coherent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swept_wing).)
Anyway, the point is that swept wings are intrinsically much weaker than unswept, which is why they have to be so much thicker than unswept wings. And that, in turn, is why the early jet fighters were all straight-winged, including the Me-262.* The 262 did have a 17 degree angle of sweep, but this was to put the landing gear in the right place, and was geometrically and structurally irrelevant,** although it may have made some minor difference to its critical speed.

*You can see this in the transition from the North American FJ-1 to the F-86, for example.
**Not to mention the same angle of sweep as the Swordfish's wings.

I recently did a couple of Early Warp-era starships using the assumption that, since the Vulcans' warp drive vessels used a torus-shaped drive system (in ST: Enterprise, anyway), the engineers on Earth might adopt the design for a while, assuming it has superior characteristics to a pair of long, relatively thin nacelles. In my own imagination, the vulcans chose this design hundreds of years ago as it had proved to be the least problematic configuration. While it can be used to make fast vessels like the Dkyr class (http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/D%27Kyr_type) and the Suraak class (http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Suurok_class) vessels, it has its limitations, and it becomes increasingly difficult (and possibly dangerous) to coax speeds beyond Warp 6.5 from this configuration.

We actually settled on the Guardsmen, inspired by our Guardian Building hq, which really was commandeered by the War Department during WWII.

Vehicle Name: Topside Courtesy Bus = TCB = Taking Care of Business (Photo below)
This 33' bus, 8' wide, renders aid to distressed motorists and residents in Detroit. It features locking nuts, one on each of ten wheels (four dualies + two spares, kevlar sidewalls) and several securing skid plate. The skid plate makes it more difficult to conceal bombs or bugs under the bus, or steal the catalytic convertor for the platinum element. The kill switch for our Topside Courtesy Van is hidden. You pull out the fake cigarette lighter, and push the button inside the socket. A spare key is concealed under a reflector above the driver's side rear view mirror, well above pedestrian eye level.

The engine is designed to alternately use as an emergency generator. The original engine was a 6 cylinder producing 140 hp, 40 mph top speed, replaced with a Detroit Diesel Series 60 14-liter, 575 hp and 1850 ft lb.torque, more powerful than larger express busses. In this application, it features engine stop/start and regenerative braking for enhanced fuel economy.

The windows are questonite, DEF 6. The windshield is clear to visible light, with UV tint. Other windows are one-way, opaque from the outside.

40803Walkyr WWII German Foo Fighter - concept art from the upcoming movie, Iron Sky

Like the heat ray pistol from the Gadget book, the gunners do not choose which MP slot to use- the GM determines if a target is flammable or not, and applies the appropriate attack.

This vessel can carry dozens of the listed bombs. Some of these bombs have a seven minute fuse on their TNT nosecone, instead of the heat Trigger. This timed fuse often results in rescue worker fatalities.

The saucer shaped hull does not provide a significant radar profile, and the antigravity engines do not emit much heat or sound. This design features a double hull of Victalen armor. A later design features a energy-charged outer hull for even greater durability.

Edit: *There will be a momentary delay while I try to say what I intended to, rather than what I posted in the first place.*

Would it have been less expensive to buy just one attack with a "sticky versus flammable targets" advantage/limitation in the first place, then pay 5 points to have another so you have two guns, one dorsal, one ventral (and presumably crew-served)?

I have an idea for a super-team's transport: a SpeedHuey. Essentially, this would be a UH-1Y given the "SpeedHawk" (http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/blogs/defense/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&plckScript=blogScript&plckElementId=blogDest&plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&plckPostId=Blog:27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post:e44b7412-5c09-4b48-80ac-3d3f5b563a48) treatment and turned into a compound helo. Projected speed would be 200kts (about 230mph).

Plus, there's the nostalgia value of using a Huey.

Is it just me, or do more than a few of those designs look like they were--ahem--"borrowed" from existing American aircraft?

Vulcan
Feb 2nd, '12, 07:47 AM
Well, aerodynmaic principles are the same all over the world, and if you have the same mission in mind, it's not impossible that two separate designers would come up with very similar designs.

Of course, it's not like most of the designs copied were ever really that secret either...

Something for you Silver Agers, mentioned on a page here-- (http://www.roadabletimes.com/roadables-integ_horton.html<br />)although I think it would look pretty impressive in any comic-book age.

While the drawing indicates a propeller-driven aircraft, it wouldn't be that difficult, I think, to depict it as jet-propelled.

Why this car isn't a part of the Hot Wheels line I will never know--the Walley Larson LE-1 Groundfighter (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/walley-larson-le1-groundfighter-ar37673.html)

http://www.gatsbyonline.com/Users/8/Images/GatsbyAutomobileDesign/WalleyLarsonLE1Groundfighter_01.bmp

Myself, I would swap out the turbocharged V-8 for a turbojet engine--then I'd have enough power for the blaster cannons, the electromagnetic weapon attractor, the sonic incapacitator, the million-candlepower strobe light ("MY EYES! OH, GOD, MY EYES!!!"), the extendable wings, the hover jets, the bowling ball thrower (who needs a battering ram when you can throw a 300-mph bowling ball at the door?)--to name but a few.

Still, this car is cool enough without all that stuff I mentioned. Pleas take note--I want this for my birthday. It's at the end of May, so you might want to start saving up now.

Nope. They discovered a "really strong metal" that could stand the pressure. Pump all the air out, and it's lighter than air!
Cavorite is just stoopid. :P

"Now, the beancounters told me we literally could not afford to buy $7 worth of moon rocks, much less 70 million. Bought 'em anyway. Ground them up, mixed them into a gel, and guess what: ground-up moon rocks are pure poison." - Cave Johnson

There's going to be a show on the SyFy channel this coming Tuesday (April 10) called Dream Machines (http://www.syfy.com/dreammachines). It follows two guys called the Parker Brothers and the shop in Florida where they build these thoroughly gorgeous vehicles from the ground up. It's a workplace reality show like American Chopper or Sons Of Guns, so you can expect a lot of arguing and stuff like, "If we can build this thing, we can move up to the next level!" and "We gotta get this built or we'll never move up to the next level!" But they also say they started the shop so they could build stuff like they saw in comics and movies, and their designs are very sleek and futuristic, so that males up for the arguing and the drama, I think.

Anyway, it occurs to me that if you were looking for someone in real life to build a superhero vehicle, these would be the guys to do it. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.

And that's exactly why I won't be watching it. I really hate those "reality" shows that focus on all the "conflict" and "drama" that you just know is mostly staged for/instigated by the cameras. I watch the PowerBlock on Spike TV because even if the builds aren't as spiffy, they act like adults not petulant adolescents.

I'm gonna check out the show.

If it has more reality show BS than this season of Sons of Guns I won't miss not seeing it again.
'Cause this season of SoG is about to get me to stop watching it.

I started a playlist >Strange Vehicles (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL89F8C672641CCE52)< on Youtube. If anyone finds something you think I might want to know about , either PM me a link or post it in this thread, if appropriate.

I will add the above paragraph to the O.P. and see what videos, if any, can be added to the list.

I first saw a picture of this car in 1968. It is still the car of the future as far as I'm concerned.
