... would HD actually allow me to enter a fractional weight for a small creature (ie .5lb)?

Could I actually write a Power as a negative to Characteristics rather than just buying back the Characteristic and not being able to put a note on it, such as

Short Legs: Running -5"

? (For that matter, *is* there a way to put a note on a Characteristic from the Characteristics tabbed section? The manual was less than sparkling clear here.)

Also, is there any good reason that attempting to download files like update.jar causes Opera 7.11 for Windows to go down harder and uglier than Ann Coulter on Joe McCarthy's corpse? (P.S. I have already contacted your webmaster on this; I just wanted to vent.)

1&2: The character packs are just pre-defined characters and prefabs. They don't change the application behavior at all. See the previous threads on the subject of negative Running for an explanation of why this is not allowed.

3: No. Though you can purchase +0 of any Characteristics as a Power and attach notes to it.

4: Sounds like something up in Opera. There's absolutely nothing special about the download....it's just a file that's sitting on the server. If Opera is trying to _open_ the file for you, it could cause issues (shouldn't, but could), but beyond that it's just data that's being pulled down.....nothing special.

Which thread on negative running do you recommend? A search on 'running' brings up an awful lot of stuff.

I hope the guys here try testing the site in Opera. I thought at first maybe Opera was trying to execute the .jar file so I turn off Java-- no soap. I manage to get the page loaded, use 'Save as' rather than directly clicking on the link-- dead. It's really getting on my nerves.

Try this thread: http://herogame.dans.cust.servlets.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6695

It's short and to the point on why Running (or other figured characteristics) can't be sold off on the Powers tab.

As for Opera, the problem is with the browser. The file is just a file on the server. There's nothing that we can do to alter the behavior on your end of things. If Opera is not handling the file format correctly, then the problem lies in Opera itself. Not a terribly satisfactory answer, but when you're just linking straight to a file, that's about all there is to say.

Thanks for the help. BTW, when making the bug report to Opera Software I found that the problem is much more profound and puzzling than I thought-- just *loading* http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/Hero%20Designer/updates/index.htm (the update page) causes the browser to crash before I even try selecting the link to update.jar! Every other Hero Designer download page works just fine...

It could also be your system; I use Opera 7.11 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP and haven't had any download problems with Hero.
